==General Information==

Zerah Dacan is an [[Aes Sedai]] of the [[White Ajah]]. She is definitely not [[Black Ajah]]. ([[The Path of Daggers: Chapter 26|TPoD, Ch. 26]])

Zerah has black hair, big, blue eyes and a prideful air about her. According to [[Seaine Herimon|Seaine]], she is "properly self-possessed." ([[The Path of Daggers: Chapter 26|TPoD, Ch. 26]])

Zerah sided with the [[Salidar Aes Sedai]] when the [[White Tower]] split. However, she was sent back to the Tower to spread dissent among the sisters. She, along with nine others, did this by telling sisters that the [[Red Ajah]] had set [[Logain]] up as a [[false Dragon]]. ([[The Path of Daggers: Chapter 26|TPoD, Ch. 26]])

When Seaine and [[Pevara]] searched for the Black Ajah, they thought that Zerah was Black. They forced her to swear to obey them on [[the Oath Rod]] and then asked her if she was Black. Zerah denied it but in the process she admitted that she was a Salidar spy. Pevara ordered her not to mention the rumors about Logain again and forced her to tell them about the other nine Salidar moles. He claims to be nine years old, but he looks younger. He is from [[Cairhien (Nation)|Cairhien]] and his father was killed by [[Shaido]], and his mother died of illness ([[Lord of Chaos: Chapter 5|LoC, Ch. 5]]). Olver has a game of [[Snakes and Foxes]] that his father made for him ([[Lord of Chaos: Chapter 22|LoC, Ch. 22]]).

He is gaunt and sullen-looking, with a squashed nose, a mouth too wide for his face, and ears too big that stick out besides ([[Lord of Chaos: Chapter 5|LoC, Ch. 5]]). He is short, as tall as [[Mat]]'s waist, and skinny. He is very proud and independent, and he takes after Mat and often tell women that "You have beautiful eyes".

Olver was given to a woman in [[Maerone]] to be looked after, but she didn't care about him, just about the money that went with it.

== Timeline ==

* Mat finds Olver in Maerone and sends him off with [[Edorion]] to get a meal and a warm bath ([[Lord of Chaos: Chapter 5|LoC, Ch. 5]]). Then Olver follows the [[Band of the Red Hand]] when they head south, without Mat knowing. He helps [[Burdin]] with the horses ([[Lord of Chaos: Chapter 22|LoC, Ch. 22]])

* Mat discovers Olver's presence and hires him as his personal messenger ([[Lord of Chaos: Chapter 22|LoC, Ch. 22]])

* On their second night in [[Altara]], Olver tries to kill [[Aviendha]] because she is [[Aiel]] ([[Lord of Chaos: Chapter 38|LoC, Ch. 38]]).

== Relationships ==

During the horse races in Ebou Dar, the boys often use their switches on each other. Mat is worried about Olver getting hurt, and if he gets even the smallest bruise Mat would never hear the end of it. Not from [[Setalle Anan|Mistress Anan]], Nynaeve or Elayne, Aviendha or [[Birgitte]] ([[A Crown of Swords: Chapter 14|ACoS, Ch. 14]]). They are all very protective of Olver.

[[Caira]] tells Mat that Olver is tucked in his bed, where he should be ([[A Crown of Swords: Chapter 21|ACoS, Ch. 21]]).

Mat is like a surrogate father to Olver. Olver is picking up everything Mat does, especially telling women that they are beautiful. Maybe Mat isn't the best father figure, according to Elayne and the others, because he let Olver do such dangerous things, as horse racing.

*After 200 years of blood feud, he allied his Taardad with the Nakai and later the Reyn. He was close to ending the feud between the Shaarad and Goshien as well.

*After [[Laman]] cut down the ''Avendoraldera'', he led the Taardad, Nakai, Reyn and Shaarad over the Spine of the World to kill him.

*At the beginning of the third year of the Aiel War, Shaiel was pregnant but Janduin could not forbid her to stop the fight as Aiel law states.

*Shaiel and [[Rand|the babe]] could not be found and he blamed himself.

*He then gave up his place as a clan chief, something that had never happened before.

Jamilila Norsish was an [[Aes Sedai]] of the [[Red Ajah]] in [[the Tower]] during the siege by the [[Salidar Aes Sedai|Rebels]]. Though she was not on [[Verin's list]] and was not taken in the [[Seanchan]] raid, she disappeared after [[Egwene]] was raised to [[Amyrlin]] and was one of the women Egwene thought might be [[Mesaana]] in disguise. However, as she had been in the Tower for many years and was weak in [[the Power]], Egwene thought this unlikely.

Like all the other Maidens, Jalani is always ready to protect Rand, and is also ready to give her life for him. She is often part of the guard that accompanies him whenever he Travels, and she is also sometimes one of the two guards that Rand allows to follow him around when he is inside the palace. Jalani usually makes a point of giving Rand's sword a disapproving look, as well as making remarks about how his own two legs should be good enough for him, so therefore, he should not need a horse. Jalani and Dedric are interested in each other. Dedric is of the Jaern Rift sept of the Codara Aiel. As nothing is mentioned about the fact that they like each other is strange, it is safe to say that they are most likely of the same clan, though this is not certain.

Jahar Narishma is an [[Arafel]]lin [[Asha'man]]. He is a bit older than [[Rand]] but looks really young ({{loc|18}}). He has large dark eyes and wears his hair in two long braids with bells ({{loc|42}}). He had the ability to channel and [[Taim]] upon learning of him visited Rand ({{loc|28}}) so that he could tell him about Jahar. After [[Dumai's Wells]], Rand picks him as one of his bodyguards ({{acos|2}}). Though Rand becomes ever less trusting, he does trust Narishma to an extent and even sends him to collect ''[[Callandor]]''. It is stated in the [[Prophecies of the Dragon]] on Callandor ''"Who draws it out shall follow after.''", though what this means is not clear ({{tpod|14}}). After the attack on the [[Sun Palace]], Rand tells [[Min]] not to trust anyone from the [[Black Tower]] apart from Narishma, [[Flinn]] and [[Hopwil]]. In his absence, Narishma becomes afraid of the other Asha'man at the Black Tower and allows [[Merise]] to bond him for protection ({{wh|25}}). They stay with Rand while he cleanses the [[taint]] and the aftermath.

==Strengths and Talents==
At Dumai's Wells, he is strong enough to Travel ({{loc|55}}).

He has taken endured enough sword training to assume the Leopard in the Tree stance when [[Cadsuane]] arrives ({{acos|18}}).

He can [[Heal]] little more than minor cuts ({{tpod|23}})

==Timeline==
*Taim comes to [[Cairhien]] to tell Rand that he found a new recruit called Jahar Narishma ({{Loc|28}}).
*Narishma is present when Rand comes to the Black Tower to address the Asha'man and give them their pins ({{Loc|42}}). He is still a soldier at that time.
*Narishma is among the Asha'man led by Taim to rescue Rand at [[Dumai's Wells]] ({{Loc|55}}).
*Rand chooses Narishma and eight other Asha'man to accompany him to Cairhien ({{Acos|2}}).

Even though he was only [[Lan]]'s cousin, he resembled him enough to be mistaken for his brother ([[The Shadow Rising: Chapter 19|TSR, Ch. 19]]). He had long dark hair held back by a ''hadori'' and blue eyes he also had the same angular shaped head as Lan ([[The Shadow Rising: Chapter 53|TSR, Ch. 53]]).

As [[Trollocs]] overran Malkier, his mother disappeared with him. It was generally believed that they both died ([[The Eye of the World: Chapter 47|TEotW, Ch. 47]]; [[The Great Hunt: Chapter 7|TGH, Ch. 7]]).

He presumably met [[Luc]] in the [[Mountains of Dhoom]] as pointed at in [[Dark Prophecy|the Prophecy of the Shadow]] ([[The Great Hunt: Chapter 7|TGH, Ch. 7]]). He is most likely the one who died yet still is, as he was sighted in ''[[Tel'aran'rhiod]]'' and Luc still seems to live.

[[Egwene]] describes Indirian and [[Mandelain]] as tall, massive, graying men with hard, sober faces ([[Lord of Chaos: Chapter 24|LoC, Ch. 24]]). Indirian has heavy white eyebrows and a long nose; although he is of only average height for an [[Aiel]]man, shorter than [[Rand]] by half a hand, everything about him seems long. Rand thinks to himself that the heat of [[the Waste]] appears to have melted away every spare ounce of flesh and more; his cheekbones stand out sharp and his eyes are emeralds set in caves. His voice is deep and rich ([[A Crown of Swords: Chapter 18|ACoS, Ch. 18]]).

*Bruan tells Rand that the Codarra and Daryne Aiel will come to him eventually; they have lost more than any other clans to the Bleakness, and for the moment, Mandelain and Indirian are concerned with holding their clans together. Both of them will want to see the Dragons on Rand's arms for themselves, but they will come to him ([[The Fires of Heaven: Chapter 2|TFoH, Ch. 2]]).

She is described as a slim, graying little woman, who is a hand shorter than [[Moiraine]]. She usually wears a solemn expression ([[New Spring: Chapter 13|NS, Ch. 13]]).

Ilain is a very discreet woman; Moiraine thinks to herself that "the grave is less discreet than Ilain Dormaile". She says that she would never reveal the affairs of her patrons in any respect ([[New Spring: Chapter 13|NS, Ch. 13]]).

==Timeline==

* A man named [[Ries Gorthanes]] from Cairhien appears at Ilain's banking house, dressed as a Tower Guard. He presents her with an order supposedly signed by [[Tamra Ospenya]], but she can tell that it is a fake and has him imprisoned. He was trying to pry into Moiraine's affairs, wanting to know how much money Moiraine has been dispensing and to whom. He manages to escape before the Tower Guards can come for him by bribing one of Ilain's employees. When Ilain finds out about the bribery, she has the young man who worked for her strapped, and then hires him out as a bilgeboy on a ship bound for [[Tear]] ([[New Spring: Chapter 13|NS, Ch. 13]]).
* Moiraine goes to see Ilain Dormaile nine days later. Ilain tells Moiraine about Ries Gorthanes; she supposedly sent a letter about it to Moiraine in the Tower, but Moiraine never got it. Moiraine is convinced that the [[Hall of the Tower]] got a hold of it and kept it from her in an attempt to convince her that they have decided against making her the Queen of Cairhien ([[New Spring: Chapter 13|NS, Ch. 13]]).
* After hearing about the issue with Ries Gorthanes, Moiraine tells Ilain to transfer a suitable recompense into her own account. Properly, Ilain objects twice before accepting ([[New Spring: Chapter 13|NS, Ch. 13]]).
* Before she leaves Tar Valon, Moiraine stops at Mistress Dormaile's banking house. Ilain gives her several letters-of-rights in various amounts, and four fat leather purses with two hundred crowns in silver and gold between them. Mistress Dormaile doesn't ask any questions, though she offers Moiraine the use of four of her footmen as an escort, which Moiraine accepts ([[New Spring: Chapter 14|NS, Ch. 14]]).

==Miscellaneous==

* Her banking house is in what appears to be a small palace. It is a southern style building. It has a high, white dome and narrow spires at the four corners. There are broad, marble stairs climbing to a wide, white-columned portico. The stones carvings, which are friezes of vines and leaves, are both well done and simple. It is a nice building, but there is a restraint about it ([[New Spring: Chapter 13|NS, Ch. 13]]).
* Part of the reason why Moiraine chooses Ilain as her banker when she first arrives in Tar Valon is because Ilain's elder brother was the banker of Moiraine's father in Cairhien; her elder brother still handles Moiraine's accounts in Cairhien ([[New Spring: Chapter 13|NS, Ch. 13]]).

Although he is not directly mentioned, Handar fights the [[Trollocs]] and [[Myrddraal]] inside the Stone ([[The Shadow Rising: Chapter 10|TSR, Ch. 10]]. We learn this when he shows his scar to [[Rand]] and discloses that he received it while fighting the [[Shadowspawn]].

He is one of the two guards on duty to guard the Heart of the Stone when Rand and his party enter through a gateway from a nearby inn. He asks Rand whether he wants to have the High Lords summoned to his chambers or a guide through the shifting corridors, but Rand declines both.

For a moment, his eyes rested reproachfully on Birgitte. He would never think of causing Elayne the smallest irritation even if she shouted at him, but he lived by his own set of rules, and, in a mild fashion, he resented Birgitte stealing his chance to enumerate the wagons and casks and barrels that had arrived. He did love his numbers. At least, Elayne supposed it was in a mild fashion. There seemed to be very little heat in Master Norry. Hamal is an [[Aiel]]man of the Moshaine sept of the Shaido [[Aiel]].

He is a blacksmith, and described as being a big man.

When the Moshaine Shaido are separated from the rest of the Shaido by stepping through one of [[Sammael]]'s gateways, they are surrounded by enemy Aiel and wetlanders. [[Maeric]], the sept chief, gives Hamal the ''nar'baha'' that is supposed to be able to transport them. He tells Hamal to keep pressing the red spot no matter what happens and no matter how long it takes for the hole to open, as it is the only way out for any of them. What they don't know is that the ''nar'baha'' is only a piece of stone, and that it will not help them.

Han's personality is described as prickly and sour. When he speaks, his voice is irascible; [[Rand]] thinks to himself that Han sounds as if he is seldom happy. Before the clan chiefs leave the meeting, Rand tells them to bring in the rest of the clans and to keep an eye on the Shaido. Han tells Rand that although the Prophecy says that he will break the Aiel, they will follow him ([[The Fires of Heaven: Chapter 2|TFoH, Ch. 2]]).

*Han tells Rand that the Shaido, Reyn, Miagoma and Shiande clans are moving; Rhuarc adds that the Shaido are moving for Jangai Pass, though it is too early to tell if the other clans are moving to join with Couladin or not. *When Rand learns, after the battle, that the Wise Ones are meeting with Wise Ones from the Miagoma, Codarra, Shiande and Daryne clans, he says that if Han doesn't need to keep the four clans off his back any longer, then he needs to talk to him and asks [[Sulin]] to send a runner. Rand doesn't know that the Shaido have all fled south, and likely wants to position Han and his men to once again try forcing the Shaido north when/if they break ([[The Fires of Heaven: Chapter 44|TFoH, Ch. 44]]).

Haral Luhhan is the blacksmith of [[Emond's Field]] and a member of the Village Council. Before leaving the [[Two Rivers]] [[Perrin]] was his apprentice.

Master Luhhan is, as you would expect from a blacksmith, described as a big man with arms the size of most men's legs ([[The Eye of the World: Chapter 2|TEotW, Ch. 2]]).

His age is not mentioned but he must be at least middle aged. Like most Two Rivers folk he's stubborn as a stone but he's also one of the more even tempered men in Emond's Field. Perrin's experiences outside the Two Rivers show him that according to the standards of the outside world, Haral Luhhan is a Master smith and that he taught Perrin well.

Hurin (last name unknown) is a thief-taker in service of the King of [[Shienar]]. He is stationed in [[Fal Dara]] and is described as being a lean man with a lined face and graying long cut hair ([[The Great Hunt: Chapter 9|TGH, Ch. 9]]). He does not have the topknot of a Shienaran warrior. This means that he considers himself to be a commoner, not a soldier. His exact age is not mentioned, but from his description and the fact that he has a wife, [[Melia]] and children ([[The Great Hunt: Chapter 13|TGH, Ch. 13]]) we can derive he is probably not a young man.

His work has taken him beyond the borders of Shienar, in several places it becomes clear he has some experience with [[Cairhien]] for instance. He also chased a killer to [[Maradon]] in [[Saldaea]] once. Hurin is very loyal to his Lords and King and has great confidence in their ability to lead.

== Timeline ==

* Hurin is introduced to [[Rand]] by Lord [[Ingtar]] when they leave to track down [[Padan Fain]]'s band to reclaim the [[Horn of Valere]] and the dagger from [[Shadar Logoth]] ([[The Great Hunt: Chapter 9|TGH, Ch. 9]]).

* Hurin leads the party mainly south to the territory of the now abandoned nation of Harad Dakar. They find several abandoned camps and a deserted village where Fain passed. They also find a [[Myrddraal|Fade]] nailed to a door in one of the deserted villages ([[The Great Hunt: Chapter 10|TGH, Ch. 10]]).

* [[Loial]] spots a stone that looks like it has been worked at the site where Rand, Loial and Hurin make their bed for the night. It turns out the be a [[Portal Stone]] ([[The Great Hunt: Chapter 11|TGH, Ch. 11]]).

* Hurin, Loial and Rand wake up in a world that might be, transported during the night by Rand. Hurin looks to Rand for guidance. The [[sniffer]] can still follow the trail and Rand decides to do so ([[The Great Hunt: Chapter 12|TGH, Ch. 12]]).

* Hurin, Loial and Rand meet Selene/[[Lanfear]] in the alternate world ([[The Great Hunt: Chapter 16|TGH, Ch. 16]]).

* Hurin's company arrives in Tar Valon. Hurin will not stay to rest for a while. He is eager to return to Shienar and tell King [[Easar]] and Lord [[Agelmar]] that the Dragon has been Reborn ([[The Dragon Reborn: Chapter 10|TDR, Ch. 10]]).

* When Rand arranges to meet with the Borderland army, they send Hurin instead. He tells Rand that he can smell something darker and more terrible than death or violence ({{tgs|37}}).

*Hurin tells Rand that the Borderlander leaders do wish to meet him, but will only do so in [[Far Madding]]. Rand refuses and tells Hurin to go back to them with a message, that if they wish to return to their posts with honor, he will take them, otherwise they can remain in hiding ({{tgs|37}}).

== Relationships ==

Hurin looks up to Rand and thinks he is a Lord. Maybe because this was a rumor in the keep at Fal Dara. Initially Rand is annoyed by this. After Rand ends up in the mirror world behind the Portal Stone he accepts more or less he is leading the party. After the battle at Falme Hurin is convinced Rand is the Dragon Reborn.

Hurin has the talent to 'smell' violence and killing that has taken place at a certain location in the past. He is able to use this talent to track down the offenders. The worse the violence the longer the smell will linger. This talent is not related to the One Power. After a meeting with a Brown Sister in Cairhien Hurin is not eager to demonstrate his talent for Aes Sedai. Hurin has been able to smell violence for four years when he is introduced to Rand in 998 NE. There is mention of at least thee others like him in Shienar ([[The Great Hunt: Chapter 9|TGH, Ch. 9]]).

== Miscellaneous ==

* Hurin is armed with a short-bladed sword, a sword breaker and a cudgel ([[The Great Hunt: Chapter 9|TGH, Ch. 9]]).

* Like most Borderlanders Hurin respects Aes Sedai deeply. He would rather avoid them though, because of his talent.

* Hurin is uneasy around people who play the Game of Houses. Probably because Shienarans have the war with the [[Blight]] to occupy their time.

* Hurin offers to come to Elayne, Egwene and Nynaeve's aid should they ever need him ([[The Dragon Reborn: Chapter 11|TDR, Ch. 11]]).

* In reply to the question if Hurin will show up again in the books on Tor's New Spring page Jordan replies: "He'll turn up again. He hasn't reappeared earlier because the part he had to play was a sidelight to the main story. You should be able to glean some of what he was doing, what effect he and the news he brought was having, from the news that came out of the Borderlands in the books following The Dragon Reborn, though." She has to share a room with [[Moiraine]] in The Gates of Heaven, because [[Master Helvin|the innkeeper]] made sure the three [[Aes Sedai]] that were staying at his inn would have enough space for themselves. After entering the room that was formerly Moiraine's alone, she begins placing her things everywhere and removes Moiraine's, because she believes that Moiraine will be going to the White Tower as novice. Once Moiraine returns, Mistress Palan talks incessantly, lecturing her on the duties of a novice, although her information is not reliable at all.

She has cold feet, an unsettled sleep and she snores.

Hadnan Kadere is a Darkfriend, he grew up in [[Saldaea]] where he joined the Shadow at a young age. His sister [[Teodora]] taught him his letters and numbers. He was forced to kill her after she found out he was a Darkfriend. He has served the Shadow in many places since. [[Tar Valon]] among them ([[The Fires of Heaven: Chapter 29|TFoH, Ch. 29]]).

When we first meet him he was traveling as a peddler through the [[Aiel Waste]]. He is a heavy set man. Muscle, not fat. He has a hooked beak of a nose, dark tilted eyes and a square swarthy face. He has a predatory look about him ([[The Shadow Rising: Chapter 36|TSR, Ch. 36]]).

Kadere has had a successful career as a Darkfriend so far. Maybe a bit too successful. He attracts the Forsaken's attention and gets caught up in their plots without realizing it at first. Kadere is eventually killed by [[Lanfear]] for his trouble.

== Timeline ==

* Kadere meets [[Rand]]'s party in the Aiel Waste in 999 NE. He pretends to be a peddler, peddlers are among the few people the Aiel allow access to the Waste. He claims to be traveling to Cold Rocks hold but he's a long way off course. Kadere is ordered to follow the Aiel to [[Imre Stand]]. He is accompanied by Keille Shaogi who later turns out the be Lanfear and Jasin Natael ([[Asmodean]] disguised as a gleeman) ([[The Shadow Rising: Chapter 36|TSR, Ch. 36]]).

* When trading at Imre Stand Kadere introduces Rand to [[Isendre]]. He apologizes to Rand for her forward behavior. Later he is seen talking to [[Couladin]] ([[The Shadow Rising: Chapter 37|TSR, Ch. 37]]).

* After the Trolloc attack on Imre Stand Kadere travels with Rand's company. He approaches Rand with an offer of information for sale. Keille prevents him from continuing the conversation though ([[The Shadow Rising: Chapter 48|TSR, Ch. 48]]).

* Kadere is present when Rand proclaims himself ''Car'a'carn'' ([[The Shadow Rising: Chapter 57|TSR, Ch. 57]])].

* [[Moiraine]] forces Kadere to use his now empty wagons to take as many power related objects from [[Rhuidean]] as they will hold ([[The Fires of Heaven: Chapter 2|TFoH, Ch. 2]]).

* [[Mat]] considers leaving Rand with Kadere's wagons. Rand just warns him not to trust Kadere ([[The Fires of Heaven: Chapter 3|TFoH, Ch. 3]]).

* When Isendre is caught for stealing (after being set up by Lanfear) and punished by the Maidens Kadere does nothing to help her ([[The Fires of Heaven: Chapter 4|TFoH, Ch. 4]]).

* Kadere follows Rand when he leaves for the Jangai Pass to take Moiraine's cargo to Tar Valon ([[The Fires of Heaven: Chapter 7|TFoH, Ch. 7]]).

* After entering into [[Cairhien (Nation)|Cairhien]] Kadere receives a message that there are other Darkfriends around him. Kadere doesn't know what to make of it but doesn't think it is good news. He has been uneasy ever since Keille disappeared and Lanfear started visiting him in his dreams ([[The Fires of Heaven: Chapter 29|TFoH, Ch. 29]]).

* Isendre visits Kadere in his wagon. He has used her to try and get close to Rand but all her attempts have been unsuccessful. The Maidens have punished her severely for trying to get into Rand's bed on several occasions. She has nothing useful to report. Kadere understands the Maidens have broken Isendre and strangles her. He then chops her up in manageable pieces to be buried later ([[The Fires of Heaven: Chapter 29|TFoH, Ch. 29]]).

* Kadere keeps out of the way during the battle for Cairhien.

* Keille shows up in Kadere's wagons again and turns out to be Lanfear herself. She demands a full report on Rand's activities. Kadere tells Lanfear that Rand slept with [[Aviendha]]. An insanely jealous Lanfear explodes at this news. She skins Kadere alive for his trouble and then tried to kill Aviendha. Kadere doesn't survive the battle that follows ([[The Fires of Heaven: Chapter 52|TFoH, Ch. 52]]).

== Relationships ==

[[Rhuarc]] mistrusts Kadere from the beginning, because the man managed to get so far into the Waste without acquiring an Aiel guide ([[The Shadow Rising: Chapter 36|TSR, Ch. 36]]).

Rand figures out Kadere is a Darkfriend but is forced to keep quiet about it so as not to expose his teacher Asmodean ([[The Fires of Heaven: Chapter 4|TFoH, Ch. 4]]).

Isendre is nothing more than a tool to Kadere. He'll keep her around as long as she is useful and dispose of her when she isn't.

Kadere holds Jasin Natael for a high ranking Darkfriend but doesn't know he is really Asmodean ([[The Fires of Heaven: Chapter 29|TFoH, Ch. 29]]).

He offers to make her a flower using [[the Power]] and some feathers but he cannot embrace ''saidin'' to change the feathers and throws them to the floor offering her cloth instead. Elayne is surprised to find that she trusts him to use ''saidin'' in her presence particularly after what he just did to them. She takes the feathers he dropped as a keepsake and accepts the silk saying she is sure [[The Majhere|the majhere]] can have something made from it. She asks Rand if he likes her and is frustrated as he seems not to know what she means. Finally he says that he is fond of her too. She is still inwardly worrying about [[Berelain]] so she tells him she wants him to kiss her. He is surprised and doesn't know how to react but she taunts him about his shock and he kisses her. He asks her if she and Egwene schemed this between them and she manages to appear shocked. She asks him if he is sorry for the pinch and he is honest and says that they deserved it. She Heals where she pinched him for telling her the truth.

Gaul interrupts them with the arrival of the [[Tairen]] Lords and Elayne goes to leave telling Rand to think about what she had said. As the Lords enter the room in all their finery Elayne observes that Rand is like a stork among peacocks in his plain clothes but that he has a presence about him that says that he is in command and that the Tairens recognize it.

Rand watches Elayne leave in amazement at what has happened, then turns his attention to the High Lords. He notices that they seem more diffident than usual and thinks that word of his earlier meeting may have spread. Rand is getting information about the High Lords via notes from [[Thom]] who is watching them. Rand's mind wanders back to Elayne and Egwene as he addresses the issue of taxes with the lords. He wants the taxes to be lowered but the High Lords disagree. Rand has the impression that High Lord [[Meilan]] doesn't like him or the position he has adopted over Tear. He tries to make them see that they have other routes of trade that they could take advantage of rather than just trading with [[Cairhien (Nation)|Cairhien]] as they have always done. Rand loses his temper with the High Lords objections and tells them exactly what they are going to do. He has found it impossible to reason with them, He notices that they don't like it but that they did listen to what he said.

Egwene is on her way back from Rand's quarters when she is joined by Mat, who just walks along beside her frowning to himself. His silence is uncharacteristic so she asks if he is still troubled by the event of the night before. He replies that it doesn't bother him. Egwene mentions that she and [[Nynaeve]] do not see very much of him and he tells her he has been busy, playing cards and reminds her that the last time he saw her and Nynaeve they bound him up with the Power in order to take [[Siuan Sanche|the Amyrlin]]'s letter from him. He also mentions that they are always with [[Moiraine]] and he does not like Aes Sedai. Mat finally admits to Egwene that he wanted to ask for her advice. Egwene is surprised. He says he is trying to decide what to do and that he wants to know what will happen, why he has holes in his memory and why he keeps speaking in [[the Old Tongue]]. She says that she may know a way but only if Moiraine agrees. He says he will not go to Moiraine. She decides to tell him about the twisted doorway ''[[ter'angreal]]'', emphasizing the dangers and says he must not try it without Moiraine's approval. He listens and says he'd have to be a fool to try it regardless of what Moiraine says and that he doesn't want anything to do with the Power. He asks her not to tell Moiraine about their conversation and she agrees she will not. Egwene makes him promise not to use the ''ter'angreal''. He swears that he will not unless his life depends on it, with some mock solemnity.

The True Power

==General==

The True Power is, like [[the One Power]], a force a channeler can tap into to create weaves. It is drawn directly from [[the Dark One]] and both males and females alike can channel it, although not without consequences that grow with each use, as it is even more dangerous and addictive than the One Power ({{acos|20}}).

Among [[the Forsaken]], it is considered a great distinction and an honor to be granted its use. They are the only ones living who know how to tap it, but they won't do it except in direst need ({{acos|25}}; {{wh|13}}).

The True Power can neither be seen or detected, except by the one wielding it. When filled with it, the user hears noises as though the world is screaming ({{acos|20}}) and feels great ecstasy that amounts to pain ({{prol8}}), similar to the glory one feels when in [[Shayol Ghul]], kneeling beneath the Dark One. With extensive use, tiny black flecks, known as ''saa'', will appear in the wielder's eyes every time he or she taps the True Power. First, there will be only one floating straight across one eye "and then across the other in the same line" ({{acos|25}}). The more the True Power is used, the more ''saa'' will appear ({{wh|13}}).

At the end of [[the Age of Legends]], the True Power was discovered when a team of researchers from the [[V'saine#Collam Daan|Collam Daan]] was looking for a source of power to bypass the "natural limitations of ''saidar'' and ''saidin''." They found a thinning in the Pattern that apparently covered "an undivided source of the One Power separate from the True Source." This energy wasn't subject to conventional restrictions like the One Power and the researchers assumed it was equally accessible by men and women, which raised their hopes of uniting "in ways previously impossible" and being able "to perform feats well beyond existing capabilities" (TWoRJTWoT).

==Theories==

[[Moghedien]] mentions a final price that is different from the ''saa'', "but no less terrible." She doesn't give further information, but it is believed that [[Ishamael]] paid it. When [[Rand]] meets him in [[Tel'aran'rhiod|the World of Dreams]], he notes that "just for an instant, his mouth and eyes became openings into endless caverns of flame" ({{Teotw|14}}). Either this is what happens when one channels the True Power too often and Ishamael was using it right then or he used Illusion tinged with warmth (the flames out of his eyes and mouth have real heat).

The only weave formed with the True Power we know is [[Traveling]]. [[Moridin]] rips a hole in the fabric of reality to step outside the Pattern ({{acos|20}}; {{Tpod|2}}). However, that is also how regular male channelers Travel. With this piece of information the question arises of whether the True Power is really as different from the One Power as the researchers in the Age of Legends presumed (TWoRJTWoT). If the way to create a gateway is the same no matter which Power is used, maybe the same holds true for all the other weaves. In that case, the True Power would have the same restrictions for the genders as the One Power has, and is only lacking designations like ''saidar'' and ''saidin''. Presumably though, there are no "halves" and the feel of the True Power (ecstasy and roaring) is the same for both male and female, even if they have to use different weaves. This is only speculation though, as there hasn't been a female channeler who uses the True Power in the series. Perhaps these differences in weaving could be worked out and a way could be found for both genders to accomplish a task using the same method.

Moghedien notes that only the Chosen know how to tap it, but most wouldn't use it unless there was no other way. However, she is not allowed to use it ({{acos|25}}). Only Moridin has the Great Lord's blessing ({{wh|13}}). Either the Dark One can enable or disable a person to be able to use it or not or the person not allowed to channel it will be severely punished. The second option seems more likely, as Moghedien thinks: "The True Power washed around her, so strong here that attempting to channel it would fry her to a cinder. Not that she had any desire to pay the price elsewhere either" ({{acos|25}}).

==Miscellaneous==

*Ishamael possibly Heals [[Lews Therin]] of his madness with the True Power ({{prol1}}).

*Moridin thinks that the glory he feels while using the True Power is worth the pain ({{acos|20}}).

*Moghedien remarks that there have been only twenty-nine aside from Moridin who have ever been allowed to use the True Power ({{acos|25}}).

*In Shayol Ghul, the True Power is so strong that Moghedien thinks "attempting to channel it would fry her to a cinder" ({{acos|25}}).

*Moridin [[balefire]]s a part of [[Mashadar]], touching Rand's balefire in the process. Both of them momentarily lose their equilibrium sense and have a ringing in their ears ({{acos|41}}). When Rand later sees an image of Moridin in his mind, he thinks the balefires touching must have created some sort of link between them ({{kod|18}}).

*When Moridin learns that the weather is about to be changed with [[the Bowl of the Winds]], he seizes the True Power and bends the wrought-iron grilles across the windows to let out his anger. He is unaware that he kills his minion, [[Madic]], in the process until he turns around ({{tpod|2}}).

*The ''[[gholam]]'' can sense the True Power, even if they do not know what it is. It makes them itch, but not quite like the One Power does ({{tpod|2}}).

==General==

The White Ajah is the smallest Ajah in [[the White Tower]], devoted to philosophy and the search for truth. They usually avoid the world and are also said to avoid worldly knowledge, they base some arguments on scientific papers (Glossary; {{prol11}}). According to [[Alanna Mosvani]], a White "consider[s] the questions of truth with implacable logic" and has "no room in her life for any passions at all" ({{tdr|23}}).

The prototype White sister displays icy serenity at all times ({{prol11}}) and insufferable coolness is their "hallmark" ({{tsr|1}}). Throughout the series they are described as emotionless ({{tdr|18}}), dispassionate ({{tsr|1}}), coolly/coldly arrogant ({{tsr|5}}; {{tfoh|18}}) and icy ({{loc|7}}). Despite their cool demeanor and vaunted reserve ({{cot|19}}), some Whites are known to possess a temper ({{loc|25}}) and eagerness for certain causes, unlikely as it seems ({{loc|41}}).

The head of the White Ajah is called the First Reasoner; [[Ferane Neheran]] currently holds this position in the White Tower (Glossary). The First Reasoner among [[Salidar Aes Sedai|the rebels]] is unknown.

White sisters usually wear white dresses, some even with white embroidery ({{loc|34}}). Their shawls are pure white, with only the stitching around the White Flame of Tar Valon to mark its existence on the snowy white background ({{loc|24}}). Intricate golden embroidery climbing the sleeves and encircling the hem of the skirt is an unusual degree of show for a White sister ({{tpod|26}}).

Very few White sisters bond [[Warders]], as most of them see no need to do so ({{ns|5}}). Their Warders keep rooms in the [[Tower Guard]]s' barracks or in the city ({{ns|7}}).

Only the White Ajah has no network of [[eyes-and-ears]] ({{prol5}}).

==Logic==

White [[Aes Sedai]] pride themselves in their dispassionate logic ({{tsr|1}}). They are, in fact supposed to forsake all emotion ({{tpod|26}}) to be able to view a subject from all angles and reason out the truth behind it without being biased. Some say they are "all logic, and no heart" ({{tgh|22}}) and feel absolutely no passion ({{tdr|23}}), but they can be considered passionate in their search for truth; otherwise they could not be so fervent about their ideas ({{prol11}}).

There seem to be many fields where Whites apply their logic, but only arithmetic has been named ({{prol11}}).

Their ideas of truth seem to vary from sister to sister and they often disagree with one another; [[Falion]] thinks [[Rianna]] has "odd, unsound notions on several points of logic" ({{acos|17}}), while [[Alviarin]] frowns upon the thought of reducing logic to numbers. [[Astrelle]] and [[Tesan]] even argue about their approximation on food spoilage, each firmly insisting that the theorem they use for their calculations is more accurate ({{prol11}}.

[[Seaine]] also doesn't believe in "blinding herself" as some do; they put away all emotion and even withdraw from relationships and the world ({{tpod|26}}), becoming engrossed with and wrapped up in questions of rationality and philosophy ({{ns|5}}). [[Yukiri]] thinks about her: "How like a White, logical in everything and often blind to the world around them" ({{prol11}}).

Even though some sisters are really sharp and can "catch the slightest crack in the logic of an argument", like Ferane ({{cot|21}}), or have an "impeccable" logic, like [[Daigian]], ({{tpod|12}}), others can be clearly wrong in their deductions, even though the basics are correct ({{tpod|25}}).

Examples of White Logic:

"When a man believes he may die, he wants to leave something of himself behind. When a woman believes her man may die, she wants that part of him desperately. The result is a great many babies born during wars. It's illogical, given the hardship that comes if the man does die, or the woman, but the human heart is seldom logical." You might say that he has decided to freeze or drown the world instead of baking it, but why? "No ''[[ter'angreal]]'' has ever been found that can 'control' a woman's channeling. (...) Very few have ever been found that perform the same function. It follows that the reports of these so-called [[Seanchan]] are exaggerated wildly. If women on 'leashes' exist, they cannot channel. Plainly not. ==Relationships==
Although White stands with [[the Blue Ajah]] ({{tsr|1}}), there is some slight strain in their relationship, for reasons only known to the White ({{ns|14}}).

[[The Brown Ajah]] supports the White against the Blue ({{ns|14}}).

There is no love lost between the White and [[the Red Ajah]]; they have stood on opposite sides of [[the Hall]] for a thousand years ({{tsr|1}}). [[Elaida]] thinks that if the White had not supported her (which they had not done at first), many other Sitters would not have stood for her either ({{prol5}}); meaning that other Ajahs support the White against the Red.

==Quarters==

The White quarters are quite plain ({{ns|12}}), with white floor tiles and silvered stand-mirrors lining the white walls. There are only a few simple tapestries with "images of snow capped mountains, shady forests, stands of bamboo with sunlight slanting through them" etc. for decoration. Alviarin has always thought they were soothing ({{prol11}}).

Although the Ajah quarters are all of the same size, there are barely more than twenty White Aes Sedai in the Tower at present ({{prol11}}).

As in any other of the Ajah quarters excepting the Red, Warders can be seen ({{ns|7}}).

==Miscellaneous==
*As white is the color of mourning, [[Moiraine]] cannot understand why so many White sisters choose to wear it all the time ({{ns|2}}).

*Moiraine thinks [[Zemaille]] is going to choose Brown or White because she is always sober and thoughtful ({{ns|3}}).

*When it becomes clear which Ajah Moiraine and [[Siuan]] choose after swearing [[the Three Oaths]], the White Sitters leave after the Brown; Moiraine wonders what the reason behind the order is ({{ns|11}}).

*Alviarin was among the Whites to present a plan about having women mate with [[Severing|gentled]] men, because the White Tower finds less girls that are able to channel every year ({{tsr|31}}).

The Maidens of the Spear, ''Far Dareis Mai'', are one of the [[Aiel Warrior Societies]], composed of only women and the only society that women join (TWoRJTWoT, Ch. 20). They originated during [[the Breaking]], when [[Morin]], a member of the [[Jenn Aiel]], took up the Spear to rescue her daughter (TWoRJTWoT, Ch. 20, {{tsr|26}}), swearing that the spear was now her husband. Interestingly, though she joined to rescue her child, no Maiden today may keep a child if they fall pregnant and are required to either give the babe away or give up being a Maiden (TWoRJTWoT, Ch. 20). As a result of that, the Maidens attach themselves to Rand, as the first son of a Maiden to come back to them ({{tfoh|19}})

Eward Candwin is a cooper from [[Emond's Field]]. He is stout ([[The Shadow Rising: Chapter 45|TSR, Ch. 45]]).

He receives a gash down his back during the [[Trolloc]] attack on [[Winternight]], and [[Moiraine]] [[Heal]]s him later on ([[The Eye of the World: Chapter 9|TEotW, Ch. 9]]).

He approaches [[Perrin]] in the hope that he can solve a problem. With so many people in [[The Two Rivers]] who need water, he has more buckets and barrels to make than he can manage on his own. Perrin finds some men that Candwin can trust to help a little ([[The Shadow Rising: Chapter 45|TSR, Ch. 45]]).

He participates in defending Emond's Field against the Trolloc hordes ([[The Shadow Rising: Chapter 56|TSR, Ch. 56]]).

Characters: [[Aviendha]], [[Elayne]], [[Reanne]], [[Alise]], [[Adeleas]], [[Vandene]], [[Ispan]], [[Nynaeve]]

Setting: [[The Kin]]'s farm near [[Ebou Dar]]

Point of view: [[Elayne]]

Once they arrived at the Kin's farm, Reanne introduces them to Alise, the woman who runs the farm "this turn". Alise is surprised to see Reanne, but not concerned. That changes when she sees the [[Aes Sedai]] in their company. A lot of the women try to make a run for it, others faint on the spot.

[[Egwene]]'s new policy of tying any woman who can channel to [[the Tower]], no matter her strength, is met with disbelief, as is the news that the Aes Sedai have known about the Kin practically since it's founding.

Nynaeve sets to the task of gathering in the women who tried to run away. Aviendha and Nynaeve spot Vandene and Adeleas shielding Ispan. Apparently the herbs Nynaeve fed the [[Black]] sister are wearing off. The twins feel this would be a good moment to interrogate Ispan as they are not going any further for a while at least.

Ispan herself still denies being a Black sister and claims to have acted with orders form the [[Amyrlin Seat]]. Elayne gets very angry when she hears the lies Ispan is telling them. Unfortunately, Tower law does not allow sisters to use more violent methods of interrogation. Elayne asks Vandene and Adeleas to leave Ispan alone with her and Aviendha for a bit. Vandene asks to speak to them in private. She tells Elayne and Aviendha that it would be best for the two experienced sisters to handle this. She suggest that Elayne's hot blood might make her do things she would later regret.

In the meantime, Nynaeve is still working on restoring order among the Kin, helped by a remarkably effective Alise. Elayne and Aviendha decide to continue sorting through the items brought from the warehouse to filter out [[the Power]] related items. They find quite a few more of them among the rubbish, including two ''[[angreal]]''. Before they are finished, Nynaeve comes in and announces that this task can wait. It is time to fix the weather.
