Estyrien al'Halien
General Information
Zerah Dacan is an Aes Sedai of the White Ajah. She is definitely not Black Ajah. (TPoD, Ch. 26)

Zerah has black hair, big, blue eyes and a prideful air about her. According to Seaine, she is "properly self-possessed." (TPoD, Ch. 26)

Zerah sided with the Salidar Aes Sedai when the White Tower split. However, she was sent back to the Tower to spread dissent among the sisters. She, along with nine others, did this by telling sisters that the Red Ajah had set Logain up as a false Dragon. (TPoD, Ch. 26)

When Seaine and Pevara searched for the Black Ajah, they thought that Zerah was Black. They forced her to swear to obey them on the Oath Rod and then asked her if she was Black. Zerah denied it but in the process she admitted that she was a Salidar spy. Pevara ordered her not to mention the rumors about Logain again and forced her to tell them about the other nine Salidar moles. (TPoD, Ch. 26) Zerah was then forced to help hunt the *Black Ajah. ( WH, Prologue)

Miscellaneous
*Zerah has worn the shawl for less than fifty years. (TPoD, Ch. 26)

*Zerah's dresses have a lot of embroidery for a White. (TPoD, Ch. 26)

*Zerah is weaker on the One Power than Seaine. (TPoD, Ch. 26)

Zerah truly believes that the Red Ajah set Logain up as a false Dragon. (TPoD, Ch. 26)

Quotes
"Zerah did not hesitate in going down. Logically, she had nothing to fear from a Sitter, a White Sitter. Logically, Seaine would tell her what she wanted when the time was ripe, and it would be nothing that she could not do." (The Path of Daggers, Chapter 26)

"I should not be subjected to this... but I will re-swear all of the Oaths, if that's what it needs to satisfy you. And I will demand an apology from you both, afterward." Zerah to Seaine and Pevara (The Path of Daggers, Chapter 26)

* The Red Ajah was supposed to take him to Tar Valon to be gentled, but instead they did it on the spot (TSR, Ch. 17).
General
He claims to be nine years old, but he looks younger. He is from Cairhien and his father was killed by Shaido, and his mother died of illness (LoC, Ch. 5). Olver has a game of Snakes and Foxes that his father made for him (LoC, Ch. 22).

He is gaunt and sullen-looking, with a squashed nose, a mouth too wide for his face, and ears too big that stick out besides (LoC, Ch. 5). He is short, as tall as Mat's waist, and skinny. He is very proud and independent, and he takes after Mat and often tell women that "You have beautiful eyes".

Olver was given to a woman in Maerone to be looked after, but she didn't care about him, just about the money that went with it.

Timeline
* Mat finds Olver in Maerone and sends him off with Edorion to get a meal and a warm bath (LoC, Ch. 5). Then Olver follows the Band of the Red Hand when they head south, without Mat knowing. He helps Burdin with the horses (LoC, Ch. 22)

* Mat discovers Olver's presence and hires him as his personal messenger (LoC, Ch. 22)

* On their second night in Altara, Olver tries to kill Aviendha because she is Aiel (LoC, Ch. 38).

* Olver follows Vanin to Salidar. He accompany Mat, Elayne and Nynaeve to Ebou Dar (LoC, Ch. 44, Ch. 27).

* Nalesean gets Olver to start racing Wind (LoC, Ch. 52). At the Silver Circuit Olver wins (ACoS, Ch. 14).

* Olver moves into the Tarasin Palace, Mat bribed Madic to move Olver into his rooms to keep Tylin away from there (ACoS, Ch. 38).

* Riselle starts to take care of Olver, at Tylin's order.

* While Mat visits with Aludra, Olver makes time with some pretty women in Valan Luca's circus (15).

* Olver enjoys his lessons with Riselle and playing Snakes and Foxes with Mat (18).

* Olver is taken to the Wandering Woman by Nerim and Lopin (WH, Ch. 30). Olver, Mat and the other Redarms leave Ebou Dar (CoT, Ch. 1).

* Juilin, Thera and Olver share a tent at Valan Luca's menagerie (CoT, Ch. 2). Thom and Tuon play Snakes and Foxes with Olver (CoT, Ch. 28).

* Olver, Nerim and Lopin helps search for Renna when she flees (CoT, Ch. 29).

* Olver asks Noal if he is related to Jain Fairstrider (6)

* Olver tells them about the Tower of Ghenjei and that Birgitte told him how to get in (10).

*Noal has to distract Olver with a game of Snakes and Foxes so that he doesn't follow Mat to Hinderstap (27).

*Olver tells Mat that he has a visitor with a distinctive face, when Verin arrives, though he doesn't realise the significance of the phrase (34).

Relationships
During the horse races in Ebou Dar, the boys often use their switches on each other. Mat is worried about Olver getting hurt, and if he gets even the smallest bruise Mat would never hear the end of it. Not from Mistress Anan, Nynaeve or Elayne, Aviendha or Birgitte (ACoS, Ch. 14). They are all very protective of Olver.

Caira tells Mat that Olver is tucked in his bed, where he should be (ACoS, Ch. 21).

Mat is like a surrogate father to Olver. Olver is picking up everything Mat does, especially telling women that they are beautiful. Maybe Mat isn't the best father figure, according to Elayne and the others, because he let Olver do such dangerous things, as horse racing.

Quotes
"Can we return to the Palace now?" Olver said, more a demand than a question. "I have a reading lesson with the Lady Riselle. She lets me rest my head on her bosom while she reads to me."

"Oh, I just cannot decide" came a boy's piping voice from the center of the women. "When I look at you, Merici, your eyes are the prettiest I have ever seen. But when I look at you Neilyn, yours are. Your lips are ripe cherries, Gillin, and yours make me want to kiss them, Adria. And your neck, Jameine, graceful as a swan's..." - Olver at Valan Luca's Menagerie (Winter's Heart, Chapter 15).
*Jalani accompanies Rand to Shadar Logoth. When Liah turns up missing, she winds up guarding Rand. (LoC, Ch. 21)

*Jalani accompanies Rand from Cairhien to Caemlyn, and then guards Rand. She promises to let Aviendha know whenever Rand leaves. Afterwards, Rand is attacked by a Gray Man, and both she and Nandera are ashamed that they did not see it. (LoC, Ch. 28)

*Jalani guards Rand when the Aes Sedai come to visit him. (LoC, Ch. 49)

*Jalani accompanies Rand from Cairhien to Caemlyn. (ACoS, Ch. 7)

*Jalani is with the Maidens in Bandar Eban. She tells Rand that Milisair Chadmar had tried to flee the city (31).

Relationships with other Characters
Like all the other Maidens, Jalani is always ready to protect Rand, and is also ready to give her life for him. She is often part of the guard that accompanies him whenever he Travels, and she is also sometimes one of the two guards that Rand allows to follow him around when he is inside the palace. Jalani usually makes a point of giving Rand's sword a disapproving look, as well as making remarks about how his own two legs should be good enough for him, so therefore, he should not need a horse. (LoC, Ch. 18)

Jalani and Dedric are interested in each other. Dedric is of the Jaern Rift sept of the Codara Aiel. As nothing is mentioned about the fact that they like each other is strange, it is safe to say that they are most likely of the same clan, though this is not certain.

Quotes
"Wasting time?" young Jalani said in a too innocent voice, rewinding her shoufa and momentarily short hair nearly as red as Enaila's. "How can the Car'a'carn be wasting time? The last time I sweated as much as he is, I had run from sunup to sundown." - to the Maidens about Rand.(Lord of Chaos, Chapter 3)

'As if for confirmation, as Rand turned to the door, Jalani briefly eyed Dedric up and down. Briefly, but with decidedly open interest and a smile. Dedric ignored her so intently he might as well have stared. That was the Aiel way, pretending not to understand until she made herself clearer. She would have done the same had he begun the looking.' -Rand thinks of Jalani and Dedric.(Lord of Chaos, Chapter 18)

"I do not think she would have gone this far, Rand al'Thor. Not unless she was trying to get away from us, and she would not do that." - to Rand about Liah. (Lord of Chaos, Chapter 21)

"Men on the other hand," Jalani put in, "are very simple." - to Nandera about Rand. (Lord of Chaos, Chapter 28)

"I," Jalani said stoutly, "would rather be beaten by the first-brother of my worst enemy in front of my mother every day for a year." - to the Maidens and Rand about Sulin becoming a servant to meet her toh. (Lord of Chaos, Chapter 28)

'Jalani's grin widened openly. "Sulin has already gone running in her wetlander dress as fast as a gray-nosed hare that sat on segade spines."' - to Rand about sending for Sulin to help him prepare for the arrival of Aes Sedai. (Lord of Chaos, Chapter 49)

'With a laugh, Jalani snatched the hood down over his eyes. "Now you can be sure no one will know you, Rand al'Thor. You must trust us to guide your feet." Several Maidens laughed.' - To Rand and the other Maidens. (A Crown of Swords, Chapter 7)
Jahar Narishma is an Arafellin Asha'man. He is a bit older than Rand but looks really young (18). He has large dark eyes and wears his hair in two long braids with bells (42). He had the ability to channel and Taim upon learning of him visited Rand (28) so that he could tell him about Jahar. After Dumai's Wells, Rand picks him as one of his bodyguards (2). Though Rand becomes ever less trusting, he does trust Narishma to an extent and even sends him to collect Callandor. It is stated in the Prophecies of the Dragon on Callandor "Who draws it out shall follow after.", though what this means is not clear (14). After the attack on the Sun Palace, Rand tells Min not to trust anyone from the Black Tower apart from Narishma, Flinn and Hopwil. In his absence, Narishma becomes afraid of the other Asha'man at the Black Tower and allows Merise to bond him for protection (25). They stay with Rand while he cleanses the taint and the aftermath.

Strengths and Talents
At Dumai's Wells, he is strong enough to Travel (55).

He has taken endured enough sword training to assume the Leopard in the Tree stance when Cadsuane arrives (18).

He can Heal little more than minor cuts (23)

Timeline
*Taim comes to Cairhien to tell Rand that he found a new recruit called Jahar Narishma (28).
*Narishma is present when Rand comes to the Black Tower to address the Asha'man and give them their pins (42). He is still a soldier at that time.
*Narishma is among the Asha'man led by Taim to rescue Rand at Dumai's Wells (55).
*Rand chooses Narishma and eight other Asha'man to accompany him to Cairhien (2).
*He accompanies Rand to see the Sea Folk, but does not go with him to make The Bargain (34).
*He is present when Cadsuane brings Rand back from meeting Darlin and stops Samitsu from going to Rand (36).
*He doesn't trust Narishma enough to tell him that Morr and Adley had been sent to the hillforts in Illian (41).
*He keeps watch on Torval when he visits from the Black Tower (14).
*Rand sends him to Cairhien with a message for Min that Illian is taken (27).
*Rand promotes Narishma to Soldier. He announces he intends to cleanse saidin and sends Narishma to the Stone of Tear to fetch Callandor (14).
*Narishma brings back Callandor to Rand and tells him he was nearly killed by the wards Rand had placed (21).
*Narishma is among the Asha'man taking part in the fights again the Seanchan in Altara (24).
*He is forced to hide from Rand with Damer when Dashiva, Gedwyn and Rochaid attack (29).
*After the attack on Rand at the Sun Palace in Cairhien, Narishma, Flinn and Hopwil stay in Cairhien, because they fear they would be blamed for the attack if they return to the Black Tower (25).
*Taim has him and the otherslisted as deserters. Logain's men do not believe this (prol9).
*Narishma is bonded by Merise Haindehl, one of the Aes Sedai following Cadsuane (25).
*He is among Cadsuane's party when they follow Rand to Far Madding (23).
*After liberating Rand from his prison they accompany him to Shadar Logoth (35).
*While Rand is cleansing the saidin with Nynaeve, Jahar is linked with Elza Penfell and Merise. Together they use Callandor to drive off the Forsaken (35).
*Rand promotes Narishma to full Asha'man, but Merise will not let him accept the dragon pin (23).
*Merise and her three warders go the camp of the Salidar Aes Sedai, with an offer from Rand that sisters may bond up to forty seven Asha'man (23).
*Merise and Narishma accompany Rand to the meeting with the false Daughter of the Nine Moons. Narishma is injured during the battle, then healed by Merise (27).

Quotes
"No, not one of the Forsaken in disguise, not unless he's managed to disguise himself as a boy not much past twenty. His name is Jahar Narishma, and he has the spark, though it has not come out yet. Men usually show later than women" (Taim, Chapter 28)

"What lovely eyes" (Cadsuane, Chapter 18).

"Most women and no few men thought him just a pretty boy, but those too-big eyes sometimes seemed more knowing than any others." (Rand, Chapter 14).

"It took a while to figure out what I had to do, You didn't tell me everything. You nearly killed me." (To Rand, about fetching Callandor, Chapter 15).

"First, Jahar Narishma stalked in trying to stare inside everybody's skull the way he does, and vanished after handing me a scrap of parchment" (Min, Chapter 27).

"Fifty-one sisters have been bonded by Asha'man already and four of us are bonded to Aes Sedai. Forty-seven makes the difference. There were five of us but one died defending his Aes Sedai. Remember his name. Eben Hopwill. Remember him!" (Chapter 23).
Isam Mandragoran was a Malkieri noble; he was the son of Lain and Breyan Mandragoran (TEotW, Ch. 47). Even though he was only Lan's cousin, he resembled him enough to be mistaken for his brother (TSR, Ch. 19). He had long dark hair held back by a hadori and blue eyes he also had the same angular shaped head as Lan (TSR, Ch. 53).

As Trollocs overran Malkier, his mother disappeared with him. It was generally believed that they both died (TEotW, Ch. 47; TGH, Ch. 7).

He presumably met Luc in the Mountains of Dhoom as pointed at in the Prophecy of the Shadow (TGH, Ch. 7). He is most likely the one who died yet still is, as he was sighted in Tel'aran'rhiod and Luc still seems to live.

For more information on him see the article on Slayer.

Author: Atarah al'Norahn

General
Indirian is an Aielman, adn the chief of the Codarra clan (TFoH, Ch. 2). He has one wife (ACoS, Ch. 18).

Egwene describes Indirian and Mandelain as tall, massive, graying men with hard, sober faces (LoC, Ch. 24). Indirian has heavy white eyebrows and a long nose; although he is of only average height for an Aielman, shorter than Rand by half a hand, everything about him seems long. Rand thinks to himself that the heat of the Waste appears to have melted away every spare ounce of flesh and more; his cheekbones stand out sharp and his eyes are emeralds set in caves. His voice is deep and rich (ACoS, Ch. 18).

Timeline
*Bruan tells Rand that the Codarra and Daryne Aiel will come to him eventually; they have lost more than any other clans to the Bleakness, and for the moment, Mandelain and Indirian are concerned with holding their clans together. Both of them will want to see the Dragons on Rand's arms for themselves, but they will come to him (TFoH, Ch. 2).

*Indirian and the other clan chiefs (Janwin, Mandelain and Timolan) still have not decided whether or not to join Rand. While planning the battle against the Shaido, Mat makes a comment that this battle would be easy enough for a child to handle, except for Indirian and the others not knowing their own minds. If they decide to go over to Couladin, they will have to toss the dice and hope (TFoH, Ch. 42).

*The Miagoma, Shiande, Daryne and Codarra clans are camped within sight of one another, a few miles to the east of Rand. Rand thinks to himself that there is now no doubt that they will come to him eventually, but not until the Wise Ones have finished their talks (TFoH, Ch. 45).

*Indirian and the others have acknowledged Rand as the Car'a'carn (TFoH, Ch. 51).

*Once, while Egwene is visiting the sweat tent with some of the Wise Ones, Rhuarc, Indirian and Mandelain join them and Egwene quickly leaves (LoC, Ch. 24).

*After Rand's kidnapping by the White Tower Aes Sedai, the clan chiefs are divided about where Rand has gone. Indirian thinks that, if he has gone to the White Tower, it cannot be willingly, and he is ready to take his clan north to Tar Valon to fight the Aes Sedai. Timolan, on the other hand, thinks that Rand has betrayed the Aiel. Mandelain and Janwin listen to what both Indirian and Timolan have to say (ACoS, Ch. 3).

*Rand speaks with Indirian, Mandelain and Janwin about the Aes Sedai and the Shaido. He is trying to prove to the three clan chiefs that the Aes Sedai do not control him, and so has Merana serve them during the meeting. The talk turns to the Shaido; the three clan chiefs wish to join Timolan near Kinslayer's Dagger to take care of the rest of the Shaido (ACoS, Ch. 18).

Miscellaneous
When Rand returns from his capture by Galina and her cohorts, Feraighin makes a comment to him that "even Indirian remembers that you commanded no wetlanders killed except in self-defense" (ACoS, Ch. 3). This makes it seem as if he is usually somewhat hotheaded when it comes to fighting.

He does not like speaking of Aes Sedai (ACoS, Ch. 18)

Quotes
"I do not like speaking of Aes Sedai." His deep, rich voice was always a shock, coming from that gaunt face. "What is done, is done. Let the Wise Ones deal with them." (Indirian to Rand; A Crown of Swords, Chapter 18).

"Sarinde tells me almost all of the Wise Ones will run with the algai'd'siswai," Indirian said at last, reluctantly. Sarinde was the Wise One who had followed him from Red Springs, clan hold of the Codarra. Or perhaps "followed" was not the right word; Wise Ones seldom did. In any case, most of the Codarra Wise Ones, and the Shiande and the Daryne, would go north with the spears. "The Shaido Wise Ones will be... dealt with... by Wise Ones." His mouth twisted with disgust. (Indirian to Rand about whether the Shaido Wise Ones will fight; A Crown of Swords, Chapter 18).

Author: Atarah al'Norahn

General
Ilain Dormaile, originally from Cairhien, owns a banking house in Tar Valon (NS, Ch. 13).

She is described as a slim, graying little woman, who is a hand shorter than Moiraine. She usually wears a solemn expression (NS, Ch. 13).

Ilain is a very discreet woman; Moiraine thinks to herself that "the grave is less discreet than Ilain Dormaile". She says that she would never reveal the affairs of her patrons in any respect (NS, Ch. 13).

Timeline
* A man named Ries Gorthanes from Cairhien appears at Ilain's banking house, dressed as a Tower Guard. He presents her with an order supposedly signed by Tamra Ospenya, but she can tell that it is a fake and has him imprisoned. He was trying to pry into Moiraine's affairs, wanting to know how much money Moiraine has been dispensing and to whom. He manages to escape before the Tower Guards can come for him by bribing one of Ilain's employees. When Ilain finds out about the bribery, she has the young man who worked for her strapped, and then hires him out as a bilgeboy on a ship bound for Tear (NS, Ch. 13).
* Moiraine goes to see Ilain Dormaile nine days later. Ilain tells Moiraine about Ries Gorthanes; she supposedly sent a letter about it to Moiraine in the Tower, but Moiraine never got it. Moiraine is convinced that the Hall of the Tower got a hold of it and kept it from her in an attempt to convince her that they have decided against making her the Queen of Cairhien (NS, Ch. 13).
* After hearing about the issue with Ries Gorthanes, Moiraine tells Ilain to transfer a suitable recompense into her own account. Properly, Ilain objects twice before accepting (NS, Ch. 13).
* Before she leaves Tar Valon, Moiraine stops at Mistress Dormaile's banking house. Ilain gives her several letters-of-rights in various amounts, and four fat leather purses with two hundred crowns in silver and gold between them. Mistress Dormaile doesn't ask any questions, though she offers Moiraine the use of four of her footmen as an escort, which Moiraine accepts (NS, Ch. 14).

Miscellaneous
* Her banking house is in what appears to be a small palace. It is a southern style building. It has a high, white dome and narrow spires at the four corners. There are broad, marble stairs climbing to a wide, white-columned portico. The stones carvings, which are friezes of vines and leaves, are both well done and simple. It is a nice building, but there is a restraint about it (NS, Ch. 13).
* Part of the reason why Moiraine chooses Ilain as her banker when she first arrives in Tar Valon is because Ilain's elder brother was the banker of Moiraine's father in Cairhien; her elder brother still handles Moiraine's accounts in Cairhien (NS, Ch. 13).

Quotes
"A slight smile broke Mistress Dormaile's usually solemn expression when she saw the shawl, and she spread her dark, red-banded skirts in a precise curtsey, neither too brief nor too deep. But then, she had given the same courtesy even when Moiraine had come in an Accepted's dress. After all, she knew how much Moiraine had left with the bank on her first arrival in the city, and how much more her estates had sent over the years. Still, the smile was genuine." (Moiraine; New Spring, Chapter 13).

"He (Gorthanes) presented an order purportedly signed and sealed by the Amyrlin Seat directing me to lay open your finances to him. Unfortunately for him, I know Tamra Ospenya's signature well, and the White Tower knows I would never reveal the affairs of my patrons in any respect. I had several footmen overpower him and lock him in an empty strongroom, and then I sent for real Tower Guards. I regret failing to take the opportunity to thrash his mistress or master's name out of him, but as you know, White Tower law takes a dim view of that." (Ilain to Moiraine; New Spring, Chapter 13).
Iagin Handar is a Defender of the Stone of Tear. He is stocky with a scar slanting across his face.

Although he is not directly mentioned, Handar fights the Trollocs and Myrddraal inside the Stone (TSR, Ch. 10. We learn this when he shows his scar to Rand and discloses that he received it while fighting the Shadowspawn.

He is one of the two guards on duty to guard the Heart of the Stone when Rand and his party enter through a gateway from a nearby inn. He asks Rand whether he wants to have the High Lords summoned to his chambers or a guide through the shifting corridors, but Rand declines both.
General
Halwin Norry is the First Clerk of Caemlyn (LoC, Ch.10), responsible for the city's monetary issues.

He is tall and bony, with a few wisps of gray hair standing up behind his ears (LoC, Ch.16).

He is very dry and apathetic, he shows no emotion and may as well have no feeling whatsoever. Nothing seems real to him except the numbers in his ledgers. He thinks of Rand as just another ruler (LoC, Ch.16).

Timeline
*Norry reports to Rand about refugees flooding into the city (LoC, Ch.16).

*Norry reports to Elayne now that Rand is gone and she is in charge of Caemlyn (WH, Ch. 7).

*Norry has kept Caemlyn alive since Rahvin had taken it over. Norry requests a meeting with Elayne (WH, Ch. 8).

*Norry tells Elayne of Elaida's proclamation about Rand, and that the Sun Palace had been attacked by a channeler, among other reports. He gives some counsel where he can (WH, Ch. 9).

*Norry reports as usual to Elayne about food getting more expensive and the like (WH, Ch. 26).

*Norry comes reporting on four small armies approaching Caemlyn (WH, Ch. 27).

*Norry reports to Elayne along with Mistress Harfor (CoT, Ch. 13).

*Norry reports to Elayne about the monetary issues of Caemlyn (CoT, Ch. 14).

*Norry finds Samwil Hark and he and Elayne set Hark to follow Hanlon (16).

*He warns Elayne that keeping a private questioner as Sylvase does, suggests the person has a dark side (35).

Relationships
Norry doesn't seem to see anybody around him. One ruler is the same as any other (LoC, Ch.16).

Norry and Mistress Harfor, the First Maid of the palace, aren't fond of each other due to the fact that neither lets the other know about their business (WH, Ch. 7).

Norry would never think of causing Elayne the smallest irritation (CoT, Ch. 14).

Quotes
"He recited the number of deaths during the week and the price of turnips carted in from the countryside in the same dusty tone, arranged the daily burials of penniless friendless refugees with no more horror and no more joy than he showed hiring masons to check the repair of the city walls." (Lord of Chaos, Chapter 16; narration of Norry making his reports).

"He did not refer to his folder. Everything on the papers in it would be inside his head, the papers there only in case she required to see with her own eyes. "Most immediate, my Lady, and perhaps most important, large deposits of alum have been discovered on your estates at Danabar. The first quality of alum. I believe the bankers will be . . . umm . . . less hesitant regarding my inquiries on your behalf once they learn of this." He smiled briefly, a momentary curving of thin lips. For him, that was near to capering." (To Elayne; Winter's Heart, Chapter 7).

The heron-like man gave a start and stopped frowning at Reene. In some ways, he saw the gateways as his, and not to be trifled with. "Yes, my Lady. Of course." His voice was a dusty monotone. "I trust the lady Birgitte already has informed you of the merchants' trains from Illian and Tear. I believe that is...um....her usual custom when you return to the city." For a moment, his eyes rested reproachfully on Birgitte. He would never think of causing Elayne the smallest irritation even if she shouted at him, but he lived by his own set of rules, and, in a mild fashion, he resented Birgitte stealing his chance to enumerate the wagons and casks and barrels that had arrived. He did love his numbers. At least, Elayne supposed it was in a mild fashion. There seemed to be very little heat in Master Norry. (Elayne about Norry; Crossroads of Twilight, Chapter 14).
General
Han is an Aielman and chief of the Tomanelle clan (TSR, Ch. 49).

He is white-haired, dark-faced and short for an Aielman. His face looks like dark, wrinkled leather (TSR, Ch. 57).

Han's personality is described as prickly and sour. When he speaks, his voice is irascible; Rand thinks to himself that Han sounds as if he is seldom happy. According to Rhuarc, Han is hard to know and difficult to deal with. However, he is dignified in a sour-mouthed fashion (TSR, Ch. 49; Ch. 57). However, grumpy though he is, still has the sense of humor that the other Aiel have. He grumps and snorts and refuses to believe that Rand does not understand Aiel humor (LoC, Ch. 4).

Timeline
*Rhuarc tells Rand that he does not know whether or not Han will support Rand (TSR, Ch. 49).

*Han is at Alcair Dal. He informs Sevanna that Couladin, since he has not entered Rhuidean, is not allowed to speak at Alcair Dal. He then questions Rhuarc as to why he has brought Rand, a wetlander, with him. He is displeased that Couladin claims to have been to Rhuidean without the permission of the Wise Ones, and looks uncertain when Rand claims to have seen the past of the Aiel in Rhuidean. He stands in stony silence when Rand reveals the secret of Rhuidean to the gathered Aiel, but proclaims him to be the Car'a'carn (TSR, Ch. 57).

*When Rand returns from battling Asmodean in Rhuidean, Han tells him that some of his Tomanelle fled after Rand revealed the secret of Rhuidean (TSR, Ch. 58).

*Han is with Rand, Bael, Bruan, Erim, Jheran and Rhuarc in Rhuidean. They discuss the other clan chiefs. Han tells Rand that Dhearic, the clan chief of the Reyn Aiel, has seen too many of his warriors sit staring for days and then throw their spears down after Rand's revelation about the history of the Aiel. Han thinks that the majority of the Aiel should never have learned the secret, and that the fact that the Aiel used to follow the Way of the Leaf is only for those who have been to Rhuidean and survived. When Rhuarc says that Timolan and Janwin will join with Rand after they settle matters in their own minds first, Han says that what they must settle with is the fact that Rand is a wetlander. He also tells Rand that Couladin will not meet with him, but means to flay him when he next sees him. Before the clan chiefs leave the meeting, Rand tells them to bring in the rest of the clans and to keep an eye on the Shaido. Han tells Rand that although the Prophecy says that he will break the Aiel, they will follow him (TFoH, Ch. 2).

*Han tells Rand that the Shaido, Reyn, Miagoma and Shiande clans are moving; Rhuarc adds that the Shaido are moving for Jangai Pass, though it is too early to tell if the other clans are moving to join with Couladin or not. Han says that if the other clans are moving to join the Couladin and the Shaido, they (Rand and the others) will be caught strung out like blindworms in the sun. When the clan chiefs leave Rand, only Han says anything: "To Shayol Ghul itself" (TFoH, Ch. 6).

*After having left Rhuidean, Rand and the Aiel enter the nation of Cairhien (TFoH, Ch. 23).

*Rand meets with Bael, Bruan, Dhearic, Erim, Han, Jheran, Rhuarc, Lan and Weiramon to discuss the impending battle with the Shaido (TFoH, Ch. 42).

*On the day of the battle against the Shaido, the clan chiefs meet with Rand once more for a few final words, to report that their men are in position and ready (TFoH, Ch. 43).

*During the battle, an Aiel warrior named Seirin brings word to Rand from Han; the clans to the east are moving towards each other. Han means to join with Dhearic, and has sent to Erim to join them. Rand thinks to himself that now there will be no one to force the Shaido north when they break, but tells Seirin to tell Han to do what he must to keep the other clans off their backs. Seirin raises an eyebrow in surprise, and Rand thinks to himself that it is because Han would not do differently (TFoH, Ch. 44). Rand later learns that with Han being occupied with the undecided Miagoma, Codarra, Shiande and Daryne clans, the bulk of Couladin's people were able to cross the River Gaelin, carrying away Cairhienin prisoners and burning the bridges behind them (TFoH, Ch. 45).

*When Rand learns, after the battle, that the Wise Ones are meeting with Wise Ones from the Miagoma, Codarra, Shiande and Daryne clans, he says that if Han doesn't need to keep the four clans off his back any longer, then he needs to talk to him and asks Sulin to send a runner. Rand doesn't know that the Shaido have all fled south, and likely wants to position Han and his men to once again try forcing the Shaido north when/if they break (TFoH, Ch. 44).

*Rand meets with his forces on the Plains of Maredo, which are made up of Aiel, Tairens and Cairhienin. They discuss Sammael. When Rand leaves after the meeting, the clan chiefs accompany him from the tent and speak some more. When Rand tells the clan chiefs that they are not to move against Sammael's Illianers until Mat arrives, Han says that they are wasting time (LoC, Ch. 4).

Miscellaneous
*Han considers Rhuarc to be a man of honor (TSR, Ch. 57)

*Rand thinks to himself that, Aiel humor being what it is, even "sour old Han" would break his ribs laughing if Rand tried to explain his predicament with the way the Maidens treat him to the clan chiefs (TFoH, Ch. 4)

*He thinks that it is bad luck to talk of what will be (TFoH, Ch. 43)

*He is touchy about his height (LoC, Ch. 4)

Quotes
"What do you do, Rhuarc," Han demanded, scowling, "bringing this wetlander here? If you will not kill him, at least send him down from standing like a chief." (Han to Rhuarc about Rand at Alcair Dal; The Shadow Rising, Chapter 57)

"The prophecy said you would break us," Han said sourly, "and you have made a good beginning. But we will follow you. Till shade is gone," he recited, "till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder's eye on the Last Day." (Han to Rand; The Fires of Heaven, Chapter 2)

Haral Luhhan is the blacksmith of Emond's Field and a member of the Village Council. Before leaving the Two Rivers Perrin was his apprentice.

Master Luhhan is, as you would expect from a blacksmith, described as a big man with arms the size of most men's legs (TEotW, Ch. 2).

His age is not mentioned but he must be at least middle aged. Like most Two Rivers folk he's stubborn as a stone but he's also one of the more even tempered men in Emond's Field. Perrin's experiences outside the Two Rivers show him that according to the standards of the outside world, Haral Luhhan is a Master smith and that he taught Perrin well.

Timeline
* 990 NE, Egwene overhears the Aybaras talk to Master Luhhan about taking Perrin on as apprentice (TEotW, Ravens).

* 998 NE, Winternight, Master Luhhan is waiting in the Winespring inn with the rest of the Village Council for Tam to arrive. Mat is trying to keep away from him for pulling a prank involving Master Luhhan's dogs (TEotW, Ch. 2). Later that day Haral Luhhan is present when Padan Fain arrives in Emond's Field.

* 998 NE, Winternight/Bel Tine, Master Luhhan takes part in fighting off the Trollocs that attacked Emond's Field (TEotW, Ch. 7).

* 998 NE, Bel Tine, Master Luhhan helps Bran al'Vere quiet a mob trying to drive Lan and Moiraine out of the village (TEotW, Ch. 9).

* Master Luhhan gives Perrin an axe he made once for a merchant guard who didn't pay for it (TEotW, Ch. 10).

* 999 NE, Whitecloaks move into the Two Rivers accompanied by Padan Fain. They take the Luhhans prisoner to draw out Rand, Mat and Perrin (TSR, Ch. 29).

* Perrin's party liberates the Luhhans and Cauthons from the Whitecloak camp (TSR, Ch. 33).

* Haral Luhhan takes part in the preparations to defend Emond's Field from a Trolloc attack, forging parts for catapults and repairing old weapons (TSR, Ch. 45).

* Master Luhhan helps defend Emond's Field from Trolloc attacks (TSR, Ch. 56).

* Later in 999 NE, Haral Luhhan goes in business with a refugee from the Almoth Plain to meet the rising demands of a growing Emond's Field (LoC, Prologue).

Relationships
Haral is married to Alsbet (TEotW, Ch. 2), a big woman who is rumoured to be as strong if not stronger than her husband (TGH, Ch. 23).

Perrin is Haral's apprentice until he leaves Emond's field. Until that point Perrin's only ambition is to become a master blacksmith. During his travels he frequently thinks back about his life with the Luhhans.

Miscellaneous
* Haral Luhhan can't stand to see butchering done. He turns pale as a sheet if he does (TEotW, Ch. 4).

* After one too many brandies Master Luhhan likes to sing even though he doesn't have a good voice for it (TEotW, Ch. 6).

* Egwene Dreams about Master Luhhan being uses as bait by the Whitecloaks while on her way to Tear (TDR, Ch. 48).

* Rand uses a technique he'd seen Master Luhhan perform on a boy found floating in the Winespring Water to save Mat's life in Rhuidean (TSR, Ch. 26).

* Haral Luhhan is not a good horseman (TSR, Ch. 33).

Quotes
"'Trollocs, boy?' Master Luhhan asked in a smoke-hoarse voice. 'Here, too. Here, too. Well, we may have been luckier than anyone has a right to be, if you can credit it. He needs the Wisdom. Now where in the Light is she? Egwene!'"<br>
(Haral Luhhan to Rand when he brings a wounded Tam to Emond's Field; The Eye of the World, Chapter 7)

"Master Luhhan, in his blacksmith's vest and long leather apron, caught Stepper's bridle. 'Perrin, you have to help me. The Warders want me to make parts for more of those catapults, but I've twenty men clamoring for me to repair bits of armor their grandfathers' fool grandfathers bought from some fool merchants' guards.'<br>
'I would like to give you a hand,' Perrin said, 'but I have something else that needs doing. I'd likely be rusty, anyway. I haven't had much work at a forge the last year.'<br>
'Light, I didn't mean that. Not for you to work a hammer.' The blacksmith sounded shocked. 'Every time I send one of those goose-brains off with a bee in his ear, he's back ten minutes later with a new argument. I cannot get any work done. They'll listen to you.'"<br>
Henre Haslin was the Master of the Sword for the Queen's Guards in Andor. He now teaches the sword to on-going Asha'man in the Black Tower. He has a bulbous red nose and only a fringe of white hair (LoC, Ch. 11; LoC, Ch. 42).

Since he heard of Morgase's death, he has been drinking a lot. Contrary to popular belief, Haslin thinks Gaebril killed her and not Rand as rumor claims (LoC, Ch. 11).

Timeline
* He and Gareth Bryne taught Galad not to make one-sided attacks while sword-fighting (KoD, Ch. 11).

* As Master of the Sword, he was in charge of training recruits in the Queen's Guards until Gaebril sent him off to his estates because Haslin was "too old for campaigning". Rand wants him to train the Asha'man, but Taim sends him away. When Rand comes to visit the training farm, he wants to have Haslin back for the training no matter that Taim thinks swords are no good (LoC, Ch. 11).

* He is training with the Asha'man when Rand pays a visit to the Black Tower in search of Taim (LoC, Ch. 42).

Quotes
"'Where's Haslin? Not drunk again? I told you, he's only to have wine at night.' Henre Haslin had been Master of the Sword for the Queen's Guards, in charge of training recruits, until Rahvin began remaking the Guards, discarding everyone faithful to Morgase or sending them off to fight in Cairhien. Too old for campaigning, Haslin had been handed his pension and shown the gate, and when news of Morgase's death spread through Caemlyn, he crawled into a winejar." (Rand to Taim about Haslin; Lord of Chaos, Chapter 11)
General
Hurin (last name unknown) is a thief-taker in service of the King of Shienar. He is stationed in Fal Dara and is described as being a lean man with a lined face and graying long cut hair (TGH, Ch. 9). He does not have the topknot of a Shienaran warrior. This means that he considers himself to be a commoner, not a soldier. His exact age is not mentioned, but from his description and the fact that he has a wife, Melia and children (TGH, Ch. 13) we can derive he is probably not a young man.

His work has taken him beyond the borders of Shienar, in several places it becomes clear he has some experience with Cairhien for instance. He also chased a killer to Maradon in Saldaea once. Hurin is very loyal to his Lords and King and has great confidence in their ability to lead.

Timeline
* Hurin is introduced to Rand by Lord Ingtar when they leave to track down Padan Fain's band to reclaim the Horn of Valere and the dagger from Shadar Logoth (TGH, Ch. 9).

* Hurin leads the party mainly south to the territory of the now abandoned nation of Harad Dakar. They find several abandoned camps and a deserted village where Fain passed. They also find a Fade nailed to a door in one of the deserted villages (TGH, Ch. 10).

* Loial spots a stone that looks like it has been worked at the site where Rand, Loial and Hurin make their bed for the night. It turns out the be a Portal Stone (TGH, Ch. 11).

* Hurin, Loial and Rand wake up in a world that might be, transported during the night by Rand. Hurin looks to Rand for guidance. The sniffer can still follow the trail and Rand decides to do so (TGH, Ch. 12).

* Hurin, Loial and Rand meet Selene/Lanfear in the alternate world (TGH, Ch. 16).

* Rand brings Hurin, Loial, Selene and himself back to their own world using another Portal Stone (TGH, Ch. 17).

* Hurin tracks down Fain's party and Rand, Loial and Hurin reclaim the Horn and the dagger. Despite Selene's insistence they decide to make for Cairhien to wait for Ingtar to catch up with them (TGH, Ch. 19).

* Hurin, Loial and Rand make their way to Cairhien. Hurin tries to keep Rand from making social blunders with the Cairhienin several times (TGH, Ch. 20; Ch. 21; Ch. 25; Ch. 26; Ch. 27).

* Hurin accompanies Rand on his trip from Cairhien after the Horn has been retaken by Fain. The trip will take him to Falme eventually (The Great Hunt).

* Hurin picks up Fain's trail again in Falme. Rand, Perrin, Mat, Ingtar and Hurin decide to enter Falme to look for Fain (TGH, Ch. 44).

* Hurin takes part in the battle at Falme (TGH, Ch. 45-47).

* Hurin accompanies Egwene, Nynaeve, Elayne, Verin and Mat to Tar Valon after the battle at Falme (TDR, Ch. 10).

* Hurin's company arrives in Tar Valon. Hurin will not stay to rest for a while. He is eager to return to Shienar and tell King Easar and Lord Agelmar that the Dragon has been Reborn (TDR, Ch. 10).

* When Rand arranges to meet with the Borderland army, they send Hurin instead. He tells Rand that he can smell something darker and more terrible than death or violence (37).

*Hurin tells Rand that the Borderlander leaders do wish to meet him, but will only do so in Far Madding. Rand refuses and tells Hurin to go back to them with a message, that if they wish to return to their posts with honor, he will take them, otherwise they can remain in hiding (37).

Relationships
Hurin looks up to Rand and thinks he is a Lord. Maybe because this was a rumor in the keep at Fal Dara. Initially Rand is annoyed by this. After Rand ends up in the mirror world behind the Portal Stone he accepts more or less he is leading the party. After the battle at Falme Hurin is convinced Rand is the Dragon Reborn.

Hurin has the talent to 'smell' violence and killing that has taken place at a certain location in the past. He is able to use this talent to track down the offenders. The worse the violence the longer the smell will linger. This talent is not related to the One Power. After a meeting with a Brown Sister in Cairhien Hurin is not eager to demonstrate his talent for Aes Sedai. Hurin has been able to smell violence for four years when he is introduced to Rand in 998 NE. There is mention of at least thee others like him in Shienar (TGH, Ch. 9).

Miscellaneous
* Hurin is armed with a short-bladed sword, a sword breaker and a cudgel (TGH, Ch. 9).

* Like most Borderlanders Hurin respects Aes Sedai deeply. He would rather avoid them though, because of his talent.

* Hurin is uneasy around people who play the Game of Houses. Probably because Shienarans have the war with the Blight to occupy their time.

* Hurin offers to come to Elayne, Egwene and Nynaeve's aid should they ever need him (TDR, Ch. 11).

* In reply to the question if Hurin will show up again in the books on Tor's New Spring page Jordan replies: "He'll turn up again. He hasn't reappeared earlier because the part he had to play was a sidelight to the main story. You should be able to glean some of what he was doing, what effect he and the news he brought was having, from the news that came out of the Borderlands in the books following The Dragon Reborn, though." (Question week 5) We can assume that the gathering of the Borderland armies and the Salidar Aes Sedai meeting them is somehow tied to this. Maybe the reports of fighting among the Borderlanders reported in several places in the books is as well.

Quotes
"I am a sniffer, you see. Been one for four years this Sunday. I never heard of such a thing before then, but I hear there's a few others like me." (The Great Hunt, Chapter 9)

"My Lord Rand, you'll get us back, won't you? Back where we belong? I've a wife, my Lord, and children. Melia'd take it bad enough, me dying, but if she doesn't even have my body to give to the mother's embrace she'll grieve to the end of her days. You understand, my Lord. I can't leave her not knowing. You'll get us back. And if I die, if you can't take her my body, you'll let her know, so she has that, at least." (The Great Hunt, Chapter 13)

"Daes Dae'mar, Lord Rand." Hurin said. "The Great Game. The Game of Houses, some call it. This Caldevwin thinks you must be doing something to your advantage or you wouldn't be here. And whatever you are doing might be to his disadvantage, so he must be careful." (The Great Hunt, Chapter 22)

"Builder, you don't know Daes Dae'mar as well as you think you do. Not the way they play it in Cairhien, not now. With most Houses, it wouldn't matter. Even when they're plotting against each other to the knife, they act like they aren't, out where everybody can see. But not these two. House Damodred held the throne until Laman lost it, and they want it back. The King would crush them, if they weren't nearly as powerful as he is. You can't find bitterer rivals than House Riatin and House Damodred. If my Lord accepts both, both Houses will know it as soon as he sends his answers, and they'll both think he's part of some plot by the other against them. They'll use the knife and the poison as quick as look at you." (The Great Hunt, Chapter 30)
General
Haesel Palan is a Murandian rug merchant with the lilting Lugarder accent. She is plump and graying, in fine brown woolens.

She has to share a room with Moiraine in The Gates of Heaven, because the innkeeper made sure the three Aes Sedai that were staying at his inn would have enough space for themselves. After entering the room that was formerly Moiraine's alone, she begins placing her things everywhere and removes Moiraine's, because she believes that Moiraine will be going to the White Tower as novice. Once Moiraine returns, Mistress Palan talks incessantly, lecturing her on the duties of a novice, although her information is not reliable at all.

She has cold feet, an unsettled sleep and she snores.

"She lectured Moiraine on the duties of a novice, all of her information wrong. Some of what she suggested would have killed most of the novices in a week if not on the first day, and the rest was just impossible. Learn to fly? The woman was mad! She followed Moiraine down to supper and gathered other traders of her acquaintance at the table, every woman of them eager to share what she knew of the White Tower. Which was nothing at all. They shared it in great detail, though." (Moiraine about Mistress Palan; New Spring, Chapter 18)
HAHD-nahn kah-DEER

General
Hadnan Kadere is a Darkfriend, he grew up in Saldaea where he joined the Shadow at a young age. His sister Teodora taught him his letters and numbers. He was forced to kill her after she found out he was a Darkfriend. He has served the Shadow in many places since. Tar Valon among them (TFoH, Ch. 29).

When we first meet him he was traveling as a peddler through the Aiel Waste. He is a heavy set man. Muscle, not fat. He has a hooked beak of a nose, dark tilted eyes and a square swarthy face. He has a predatory look about him (TSR, Ch. 36).

Kadere has had a successful career as a Darkfriend so far. Maybe a bit too successful. He attracts the Forsaken's attention and gets caught up in their plots without realizing it at first. Kadere is eventually killed by Lanfear for his trouble.

Timeline
* Kadere meets Rand's party in the Aiel Waste in 999 NE. He pretends to be a peddler, peddlers are among the few people the Aiel allow access to the Waste. He claims to be traveling to Cold Rocks hold but he's a long way off course. Kadere is ordered to follow the Aiel to Imre Stand. He is accompanied by Keille Shaogi who later turns out the be Lanfear and Jasin Natael (Asmodean disguised as a gleeman) (TSR, Ch. 36).

* When trading at Imre Stand Kadere introduces Rand to Isendre. He apologizes to Rand for her forward behavior. Later he is seen talking to Couladin (TSR, Ch. 37).

* After the Trolloc attack on Imre Stand Kadere travels with Rand's company. He approaches Rand with an offer of information for sale. Keille prevents him from continuing the conversation though (TSR, Ch. 48).

* Kadere is present when Rand proclaims himself Car'a'carn (TSR, Ch. 57)].

* Moiraine forces Kadere to use his now empty wagons to take as many power related objects from Rhuidean as they will hold (TFoH, Ch. 2).

* Mat considers leaving Rand with Kadere's wagons. Rand just warns him not to trust Kadere (TFoH, Ch. 3).

* When Isendre is caught for stealing (after being set up by Lanfear) and punished by the Maidens Kadere does nothing to help her (TFoH, Ch. 4).

* Kadere follows Rand when he leaves for the Jangai Pass to take Moiraine's cargo to Tar Valon (TFoH, Ch. 7).

* After entering into Cairhien Kadere receives a message that there are other Darkfriends around him. Kadere doesn't know what to make of it but doesn't think it is good news. He has been uneasy ever since Keille disappeared and Lanfear started visiting him in his dreams (TFoH, Ch. 29).

* Isendre visits Kadere in his wagon. He has used her to try and get close to Rand but all her attempts have been unsuccessful. The Maidens have punished her severely for trying to get into Rand's bed on several occasions. She has nothing useful to report. Kadere understands the Maidens have broken Isendre and strangles her. He then chops her up in manageable pieces to be buried later (TFoH, Ch. 29).

* Kadere keeps out of the way during the battle for Cairhien.

* Keille shows up in Kadere's wagons again and turns out to be Lanfear herself. She demands a full report on Rand's activities. Kadere tells Lanfear that Rand slept with Aviendha. An insanely jealous Lanfear explodes at this news. She skins Kadere alive for his trouble and then tried to kill Aviendha. Kadere doesn't survive the battle that follows (TFoH, Ch. 52).

Relationships
Rhuarc mistrusts Kadere from the beginning, because the man managed to get so far into the Waste without acquiring an Aiel guide (TSR, Ch. 36).

Rand figures out Kadere is a Darkfriend but is forced to keep quiet about it so as not to expose his teacher Asmodean (TFoH, Ch. 4).

Isendre is nothing more than a tool to Kadere. He'll keep her around as long as she is useful and dispose of her when she isn't.

Kadere holds Jasin Natael for a high ranking Darkfriend but doesn't know he is really Asmodean (TFoH, Ch. 29).

Miscellaneous
* Mat acquires the broad brimmed hat from Kadere (TSR, Ch. 36).

* Rand thinks Kadere's eyes mark him a dangerous man (TSR, Ch. 36).

* Born in cold Saldaea the heat of the Aiel Waste makes Kadere sweat perpetually.

Quotes
"'I have heard other things. I have heard that you took Callandor out of the Heart of the Stone.'
The man's eyed never changed. If he knew about Callandor, he knew Rand was the Dragon Reborn, knew he could wield the One Power. And his eyes never changed. A dangerous man. 'I have heard it said,' Rand told him, 'that you should believe nothing you hear, and only half of what you see.'<br>
'A wise rule,' Kadere said after a moment. 'Yet to achieve greatly, a man must believe something. Belief and knowledge pave the road to greatness. Knowledge is perhaps the most valuable of all. We all seek the coin of knowledge. Your pardon, good sir. Isendre is not a patient woman. Perhaps we will have another opportunity to talk.'" (Kadere to Rand at Imre Stand; (The Shadow Rising, Chapter 37)

"Stunned, he stared at her. She had had such lovely dark hair. Yet she was beautiful enough that even being bald as an egg only made her seem exotic. Her tears and sagging face detracted only a little. If she could put herself into al'Thor's bed for just one night... It was not going to happen. The Maidens had broken her. He had broken people himself, and he knew the signs. Eagerness to avoid more punishment became eagerness to obey. The mind never wanted to admit it was running from something, so she would soon convince herself that she really wanted to obey, that she really wanted nothing more than to please the Maidens." (Kadere realizing the Maidens have broken Isendre; The Fires of Heaven, Chapter 4)

"As she reached for the door, her eyes going to the handle, he had the kerchief spun to a cord in an instant and around her neck. He tried to ignore her rasping gurgles, the frantic scraping of her feet on the floor. Her fingers clawed at his hands, but he stared straight ahead. Even keeping his eyes open, he saw Teodora; he always did, when he killed a woman. He had loved his sister, but she had discovered what he was, and she would not have kept silent. Isendre's heels drummed violently, but after what seemed an eternity they slowed, went still, and she became a dead weight dragging at his hands. He held the cord tight for a count of sixty before unwinding it and letting her fall. She would have been confessing, next. Confessing to being a Darkfriend. Pointing a finger at him." (Kadere thinking about his sister Teodora as he kills Isendre; (The Fires of Heaven, Chapter 4)

"Kadere ignored the first three riders as much as the Aes Sedai had ignored him, and Mat Cauthon almost as much. The man was wearing his hat; he had never been able to find a replacement. The Aiel wench, Aviendha, rode up behind the young Aes Sedai's saddle, both with their skirts pushed up to show their legs. If he needed any confirmation that the Aiel woman was bedding al'Thor, he only had to see the way she looked at him; a woman who had taken a man to her bed always looked at him with that light of ownership in her eyes after. More importantly, Natael was with them. This was the first time Kadere had been this close to him since crossing the Spine of the World. Natael, who stood high in the Darkfriends. If he could get past the Maidens to reach Natael..." (Kadere trying to come up with a way to get out of the mess he is in; (The Fires of Heaven, Chapter 4)
Characters: Elayne, Rand, Gaul, Meilan, Sunamon, Egwene, Mat
Setting: Rand's Quarters in the Stone of Tear, Hallway in the Stone of Tear
Points of view: Elayne, Rand, Egwene

Elayne's point of view

Egwene has left Elayne alone with Rand in his quarters, although Rand doesn't seem to notice that she is there. When he does he is uneasy and doesn't know how to act around her. He keeps calling her 'my lady' and she scolds him for it. She asks him if he was very hurt by what Egwene has said and what he tells her makes her relieved that he won't long for Egwene. He offers to make her a flower using the Power and some feathers but he cannot embrace saidin to change the feathers and throws them to the floor offering her cloth instead. Elayne is surprised to find that she trusts him to use saidin in her presence particularly after what he just did to them. She takes the feathers he dropped as a keepsake and accepts the silk saying she is sure the majhere can have something made from it. She asks Rand if he likes her and is frustrated as he seems not to know what she means. Finally he says that he is fond of her too. She is still inwardly worrying about Berelain so she tells him she wants him to kiss her. He is surprised and doesn't know how to react but she taunts him about his shock and he kisses her. He asks her if she and Egwene schemed this between them and she manages to appear shocked. She asks him if he is sorry for the pinch and he is honest and says that they deserved it. She Heals where she pinched him for telling her the truth.

Gaul interrupts them with the arrival of the Tairen Lords and Elayne goes to leave telling Rand to think about what she had said. As the Lords enter the room in all their finery Elayne observes that Rand is like a stork among peacocks in his plain clothes but that he has a presence about him that says that he is in command and that the Tairens recognize it.

----

Rand's point of view

Rand watches Elayne leave in amazement at what has happened, then turns his attention to the High Lords. He notices that they seem more diffident than usual and thinks that word of his earlier meeting may have spread. Rand is getting information about the High Lords via notes from Thom who is watching them. Rand's mind wanders back to Elayne and Egwene as he addresses the issue of taxes with the lords. He wants the taxes to be lowered but the High Lords disagree. Rand has the impression that High Lord Meilan doesn't like him or the position he has adopted over Tear. He tries to make them see that they have other routes of trade that they could take advantage of rather than just trading with Cairhien as they have always done. Rand loses his temper with the High Lords objections and tells them exactly what they are going to do. He has found it impossible to reason with them, He notices that they don't like it but that they did listen to what he said.

----

Egwene's point of view

Egwene is on her way back from Rand's quarters when she is joined by Mat, who just walks along beside her frowning to himself. His silence is uncharacteristic so she asks if he is still troubled by the event of the night before. He replies that it doesn't bother him. Egwene mentions that she and Nynaeve do not see very much of him and he tells her he has been busy, playing cards and reminds her that the last time he saw her and Nynaeve they bound him up with the Power in order to take the Amyrlin's letter from him. He also mentions that they are always with Moiraine and he does not like Aes Sedai. Mat finally admits to Egwene that he wanted to ask for her advice. Egwene is surprised. He says he is trying to decide what to do and that he wants to know what will happen, why he has holes in his memory and why he keeps speaking in the Old Tongue. She says that she may know a way but only if Moiraine agrees. He says he will not go to Moiraine. She decides to tell him about the twisted doorway ter'angreal, emphasizing the dangers and says he must not try it without Moiraine's approval. He listens and says he'd have to be a fool to try it regardless of what Moiraine says and that he doesn't want anything to do with the Power. He asks her not to tell Moiraine about their conversation and she agrees she will not. Egwene makes him promise not to use the ter'angreal. He swears that he will not unless his life depends on it, with some mock solemnity.

Nico Demus:

Author: Kyria d'Oreyn

General
The True Power is, like the One Power, a force a channeler can tap into to create weaves. It is drawn directly from the Dark One and both males and females alike can channel it, although not without consequences that grow with each use, as it is even more dangerous and addictive than the One Power (20).

Among the Forsaken, it is considered a great distinction and an honor to be granted its use. They are the only ones living who know how to tap it, but they won't do it except in direst need (25; 13).

The True Power can neither be seen or detected, except by the one wielding it. When filled with it, the user hears noises as though the world is screaming (20) and feels great ecstasy that amounts to pain (prol8), similar to the glory one feels when in Shayol Ghul, kneeling beneath the Dark One. With extensive use, tiny black flecks, known as saa, will appear in the wielder's eyes every time he or she taps the True Power. First, there will be only one floating straight across one eye "and then across the other in the same line" (25). The more the True Power is used, the more saa will appear (13).

At the end of the Age of Legends, the True Power was discovered when a team of researchers from the Collam Daan was looking for a source of power to bypass the "natural limitations of saidar and saidin." They found a thinning in the Pattern that apparently covered "an undivided source of the One Power separate from the True Source." This energy wasn't subject to conventional restrictions like the One Power and the researchers assumed it was equally accessible by men and women, which raised their hopes of uniting "in ways previously impossible" and being able "to perform feats well beyond existing capabilities" (TWoRJTWoT).

Theories
Moghedien mentions a final price that is different from the saa, "but no less terrible." She doesn't give further information, but it is believed that Ishamael paid it. When Rand meets him in the World of Dreams, he notes that "just for an instant, his mouth and eyes became openings into endless caverns of flame" (14). Either this is what happens when one channels the True Power too often and Ishamael was using it right then or he used Illusion tinged with warmth (the flames out of his eyes and mouth have real heat).

The only weave formed with the True Power we know is Traveling. Moridin rips a hole in the fabric of reality to step outside the Pattern (20; 2). However, that is also how regular male channelers Travel. With this piece of information the question arises of whether the True Power is really as different from the One Power as the researchers in the Age of Legends presumed (TWoRJTWoT). If the way to create a gateway is the same no matter which Power is used, maybe the same holds true for all the other weaves. In that case, the True Power would have the same restrictions for the genders as the One Power has, and is only lacking designations like saidar and saidin. Presumably though, there are no "halves" and the feel of the True Power (ecstasy and roaring) is the same for both male and female, even if they have to use different weaves. This is only speculation though, as there hasn't been a female channeler who uses the True Power in the series. Perhaps these differences in weaving could be worked out and a way could be found for both genders to accomplish a task using the same method.

Moghedien notes that only the Chosen know how to tap it, but most wouldn't use it unless there was no other way. However, she is not allowed to use it (25). Only Moridin has the Great Lord's blessing (13). Either the Dark One can enable or disable a person to be able to use it or not or the person not allowed to channel it will be severely punished. The second option seems more likely, as Moghedien thinks: "The True Power washed around her, so strong here that attempting to channel it would fry her to a cinder. Not that she had any desire to pay the price elsewhere either" (25).

Miscellaneous
*Ishamael possibly Heals Lews Therin of his madness with the True Power (prol1).

*Moridin thinks that the glory he feels while using the True Power is worth the pain (20).

*Moghedien remarks that there have been only twenty-nine aside from Moridin who have ever been allowed to use the True Power (25).

*In Shayol Ghul, the True Power is so strong that Moghedien thinks "attempting to channel it would fry her to a cinder" (25).

*Moridin balefires a part of Mashadar, touching Rand's balefire in the process. Both of them momentarily lose their equilibrium sense and have a ringing in their ears (41). When Rand later sees an image of Moridin in his mind, he thinks the balefires touching must have created some sort of link between them (18).

*When Moridin learns that the weather is about to be changed with the Bowl of the Winds, he seizes the True Power and bends the wrought-iron grilles across the windows to let out his anger. He is unaware that he kills his minion, Madic, in the process until he turns around (2).

*The gholam can sense the True Power, even if they do not know what it is. It makes them itch, but not quite like the One Power does (2).

*Demandred has never used the True Power except in great need and now, only Moridin is granted the right to use it (13).

Quotes
"An honor with a bite, as any of the Chosen knew. In the long run, the True Power was far more addictive than the One Power; a strong will could hold down the desire to draw more saidar or saidin, but she herself did not believe the will existed strong enough to resist the True Power, not once the saa appeared in your eyes. The final price was different, but no less terrible." (Moghedien on the True Power; Chapter 25)

"A black speck floated across Moridin's blue eyes, then another, in a steady stream. The man must have been using the True Power exclusively since he last saw him to gain so many saa so quickly. He himself had never touched the True Power except at need. Great need. Of course, only Moridin had that privilege now, since his... anointing. The man truly was insane to use it so freely. It was a drug more addictive than saidin, more deadly than poison." (Demandred; Chapter 13)

Author: Kyria d'Oreyn

General
The White Ajah is the smallest Ajah in the White Tower, devoted to philosophy and the search for truth. They usually avoid the world and are also said to avoid worldly knowledge, they base some arguments on scientific papers (Glossary; prol11). According to Alanna Mosvani, a White "consider[s] the questions of truth with implacable logic" and has "no room in her life for any passions at all" (23).

The prototype White sister displays icy serenity at all times (prol11) and insufferable coolness is their "hallmark" (1). Throughout the series they are described as emotionless (18), dispassionate (1), coolly/coldly arrogant (5; 18) and icy (7). Despite their cool demeanor and vaunted reserve (19), some Whites are known to possess a temper (25) and eagerness for certain causes, unlikely as it seems (41).

The head of the White Ajah is called the First Reasoner; Ferane Neheran currently holds this position in the White Tower (Glossary). The First Reasoner among the rebels is unknown.

White sisters usually wear white dresses, some even with white embroidery (34). Their shawls are pure white, with only the stitching around the White Flame of Tar Valon to mark its existence on the snowy white background (24). Intricate golden embroidery climbing the sleeves and encircling the hem of the skirt is an unusual degree of show for a White sister (26).

Very few White sisters bond Warders, as most of them see no need to do so (5). Their Warders keep rooms in the Tower Guards' barracks or in the city (7).

Only the White Ajah has no network of eyes-and-ears (prol5).

Logic
White Aes Sedai pride themselves in their dispassionate logic (1). They are, in fact supposed to forsake all emotion (26) to be able to view a subject from all angles and reason out the truth behind it without being biased. Some say they are "all logic, and no heart" (22) and feel absolutely no passion (23), but they can be considered passionate in their search for truth; otherwise they could not be so fervent about their ideas (prol11).

There seem to be many fields where Whites apply their logic, but only arithmetic has been named (prol11).

Their ideas of truth seem to vary from sister to sister and they often disagree with one another; Falion thinks Rianna has "odd, unsound notions on several points of logic" (17), while Alviarin frowns upon the thought of reducing logic to numbers. Astrelle and Tesan even argue about their approximation on food spoilage, each firmly insisting that the theorem they use for their calculations is more accurate (prol11.

Seaine also doesn't believe in "blinding herself" as some do; they put away all emotion and even withdraw from relationships and the world (26), becoming engrossed with and wrapped up in questions of rationality and philosophy (5). Yukiri thinks about her: "How like a White, logical in everything and often blind to the world around them" (prol11).

Even though some sisters are really sharp and can "catch the slightest crack in the logic of an argument", like Ferane (21), or have an "impeccable" logic, like Daigian, (12), others can be clearly wrong in their deductions, even though the basics are correct (25).

Examples of White Logic:

"When a man believes he may die, he wants to leave something of himself behind. When a woman believes her man may die, she wants that part of him desperately. The result is a great many babies born during wars. It's illogical, given the hardship that comes if the man does die, or the woman, but the human heart is seldom logical." (Meilyn Arganya; Chapter 5)

"Since al'Thor can Travel, (...) it seems logical at least that some of these men can, too." (Alviarin on Asha'man; 32)

"If you accept that the lingering heat was the Dark One's work, the change must be by some other agency. He would not have relented. You might say that he has decided to freeze or drown the world instead of baking it, but why? Had the heat continued through spring, the dead might well have outnumbered the living, no different than if snow falls into the summer. Therefore, logically, some other hand is at work." (Daigian Moseneillin; 12)

"No ter'angreal has ever been found that can 'control' a woman's channeling. (...) Very few have ever been found that perform the same function. Therefore, logically, if such a ter'angreal were found, or more than one, improbable as that must be, there could not be sufficient of them to control more than two or three women at most. It follows that the reports of these so-called Seanchan are exaggerated wildly. If women on 'leashes' exist, they cannot channel. Plainly not. I do not deny these people hold Ebou Dar, and Amador, and perhaps more, but clearly they are but a creation of Rand al'Thor, perhaps to frighten people into flocking to him. Like this Prophet of his. It is simple logic." (Velina; 25)

"al'Thor was the Dragon Reborn, and logically, she must follow him." (Sarene Nemdahl; 13)

"Calculating with Radun’s Standard of Deviation, the rate is eleven times what it should be. Furthermore, this must indicate the intervention of the Shadow—”<br>
"The Shadow, yes, but Radun’s Standard, it is outdated. You must use Covanen’s First Rule of Medians, and calculate separately for rotting meat or rotten. The correct answers, as I said, are thirteen and nine. I have not yet applied it to the flour or the beans and the lentils, but it seems intuitively obvious—” (Astrelle and Tesan; prol11)

Relationships
Although White stands with the Blue Ajah (1), there is some slight strain in their relationship, for reasons only known to the White (14).

The Brown Ajah supports the White against the Blue (14).

There is no love lost between the White and the Red Ajah; they have stood on opposite sides of the Hall for a thousand years (1). Elaida thinks that if the White had not supported her (which they had not done at first), many other Sitters would not have stood for her either (prol5); meaning that other Ajahs support the White against the Red.

Quarters
The White quarters are quite plain (12), with white floor tiles and silvered stand-mirrors lining the white walls. There are only a few simple tapestries with "images of snow capped mountains, shady forests, stands of bamboo with sunlight slanting through them" etc. for decoration. Alviarin has always thought they were soothing (prol11).

Although the Ajah quarters are all of the same size, there are barely more than twenty White Aes Sedai in the Tower at present (prol11).

As in any other of the Ajah quarters excepting the Red, Warders can be seen (7).

Miscellaneous
*As white is the color of mourning, Moiraine cannot understand why so many White sisters choose to wear it all the time (2).

*Moiraine thinks Zemaille is going to choose Brown or White because she is always sober and thoughtful (3).

*When it becomes clear which Ajah Moiraine and Siuan choose after swearing the Three Oaths, the White Sitters leave after the Brown; Moiraine wonders what the reason behind the order is (11).

*Alviarin was among the Whites to present a plan about having women mate with gentled men, because the White Tower finds less girls that are able to channel every year (31).

*In the rebel Hall, White, Brown and Blue benches stand on one side with Green, Gray and Yellow on the other (19).

*Kumira: "I would rather an ounce of hard proof than a hundredweight of your White Ajah logic." (21)
The Maidens of the Spear, Far Dareis Mai, are one of the Aiel Warrior Societies, composed of only women and the only society that women join (TWoRJTWoT, Ch. 20). They originated during the Breaking, when Morin, a member of the Jenn Aiel, took up the Spear to rescue her daughter (TWoRJTWoT, Ch. 20, 26), swearing that the spear was now her husband. Interestingly, though she joined to rescue her child, no Maiden today may keep a child if they fall pregnant and are required to either give the babe away or give up being a Maiden (TWoRJTWoT, Ch. 20). As a result of that, the Maidens attach themselves to Rand, as the first son of a Maiden to come back to them (19)
Prophecy
The Maidens are mentioned in several prophecies
;The Karatheon cycle
On the slopes of Dragonmount shall he be born, born of a maiden wedded to no man.
;The Prophecy of the Car'a'carn
The Stone that never falls will fall to announce his coming. We will know him when we see him, for he will be marked. He will come from the west, beyond the Spine of the World, but be of our blood. He will go to Rhuidean, and lead us out of the Three-fold Land. Under this sign (the ancient Aes Sedai symbol) he will conquer. He will be born of Far Dareis Mai. Blood of our blood mixed with the old blood, raised by an ancient blood not ours. Of the blood, but not raised by the blood, he will come from Rhuidean at dawn, and tie you together with bonds you cannot break. He will take you back, and he will destroy you. He shall spill out the blood of those who calls themselves Aiel as water on sand, and he shall break them as dried twigs, yet the remnant of a remnant he shall save, and they shall live.
;Gitara's Foretelling
Gitara Moroso told Tigraine to go to the Waste and not return until the Maidens had been to Tar Valon.
Quotes
What you say comes near truth, yet misses it completely. When we wed the spear, we pledge to be bound to no man or child. Some do give up the spear, for a man or a child but once given up, the spear cannot be taken back.” (Bain, To Elayne, Egwene and Nynaeve, Chapter 38).

Whatever the Car'a'carn wanted, nothing must happen to the only son of a Maiden ever to come back to them (Chapter 19)

I am the spear. When a lover came between me and the spear, I chose the spear. Some chose the other way. Some decide they have run with the spears long enough, that they want a husband, a child. I have never wanted anything else. No chief would hesitate to send me wherever the dance is hottest. If I died there, my first-sisters would mourn me, but not a fingernail more than when our first-brother fell. A treekiller who stabbed me to the heart in my sleep would do me more honor than you do. Do you understand now?” (Sulin to Rand, Chapter 35)
Setting: The Kin's farm near Ebou Dar

Point of view: Elayne

Once they arrived at the Kin's farm, Reanne introduces them to Alise, the woman who runs the farm "this turn". Alise is surprised to see Reanne, but not concerned. That changes when she sees the Aes Sedai in their company. A lot of the women try to make a run for it, others faint on the spot.

Egwene's new policy of tying any woman who can channel to the Tower, no matter her strength, is met with disbelief, as is the news that the Aes Sedai have known about the Kin practically since it's founding.

Nynaeve sets to the task of gathering in the women who tried to run away. Aviendha and Nynaeve spot Vandene and Adeleas shielding Ispan. Apparently the herbs Nynaeve fed the Black sister are wearing off. The twins feel this would be a good moment to interrogate Ispan as they are not going any further for a while at least.

Ispan herself still denies being a Black sister and claims to have acted with orders form the Amyrlin Seat. Elayne gets very angry when she hears the lies Ispan is telling them. Unfortunately, Tower law does not allow sisters to use more violent methods of interrogation. Elayne asks Vandene and Adeleas to leave Ispan alone with her and Aviendha for a bit. Vandene asks to speak to them in private. She tells Elayne and Aviendha that it would be best for the two experienced sisters to handle this. She suggest that Elayne's hot blood might make her do things she would later regret.

In the meantime, Nynaeve is still working on restoring order among the Kin, helped by a remarkably effective Alise. Elayne and Aviendha decide to continue sorting through the items brought from the warehouse to filter out the Power related items. They find quite a few more of them among the rubbish, including two angreal. Before they are finished, Nynaeve comes in and announces that this task can wait. It is time to fix the weather.
