The area of study that interests me most is criminology - I am a criminologist. That entails anything, basically, that has to do with crime, but I'm more so focused on the qualitative study of crime than the quantitative - which means I'm more interested in specific cases than the general public and numbers. In my understanding, crime can't be "measured", crime is a "hidden world" as we call it, so I'm highly suspicious of numbers regarding crime (which more often than not are a representation of law enforcement focus than anything else). I got involved in criminology when I minored in it during my bachelor's (majored in clinical psychology). It was totally my thing - it's truly a very fascinating phenomenon. It has also taught me to be a lot more critical about crime and the way it's portrayed in mass media. It's a topic of interest in every medium, from book fiction to TV fiction to the news. Basically, criminology has taught me to become less scared of the world, because factually, crime, especially violent crime, happens a lot less than we (are made to) think. Especially this whole representation of crime in the media interests me, which resulted in me studying how law enforcement and punishment are portrayed in dystopian science fiction. Writing my thesis made me strangely happy - apparently I'm one of those strange creatures that loves to do a thesis. This feeling was amplified by the fact that I could combine three of my favorite things in the world: criminology, (dystopian) sci-fi and writing.<br />

The area of study that interests me most is criminology - I am a criminologist. That entails anything, basically, that has to do with crime, but I'm more so focused on the qualitative study of crime than the quantitative - which means I'm more interested in specific cases than the general public and numbers. In my understanding, crime can't be "measured", crime is a "hidden world" as we call it, so I'm highly suspicious of numbers regarding crime (which more often than not are a representation of law enforcement focus than anything else). I got involved in criminology when I minored in it during my bachelor's (majored in clinical psychology). It was totally my thing - it's truly a very fascinating phenomenon. It has also taught me to be a lot more critical about crime and the way it's portrayed in mass media. It's a topic of interest in every medium, from book fiction to TV fiction to the news. Basically, criminology has taught me to become less scared of the world, because factually, crime, especially violent crime, happens a lot less than we (are made to) think. Especially this whole representation of crime in the media interests me, which resulted in me studying how law enforcement and punishment are portrayed in dystopian science fiction. Writing my thesis made me strangely happy - apparently I'm one of those strange creatures that loves to do a thesis. This feeling was amplified by the fact that I could combine three of my favorite things in the world: criminology, (dystopian) sci-fi and writing.<br />
I'm currently looking for a job and sincerely hope I'll find something in criminology, though it's scarce. If that's not going to work out, I'm going to continue writing about movies (on themoviescrutineer.com) and articles based on my thesis and perhaps a book on the methods of doing film analysis in criminology.<br />

I would sit on the school bus, pondering the etymology of words like happy, happen, and perhaps, for example. Fortunately, when my friends and I were signing up for classes for our 2nd semester of college, one of them found a class that looked interesting - Intro to Linguistics - and asked me to take it with him. He was not pleased when I aced it and he only got a B! That was how I discovered that all the fascinating aspects of language fall under a single educational category, with none of the fluff that would have gone along with "English Major." Sadly, that school didn't offer a major in Linguistics, so maybe I will eventually go back to school elsewhere and graduate...<br />

It takes me completely out of the movie. I mean, if you're going to go through the effort of making a movie why not hire a costumer who can do a bit of research to make it accurate? The only time I let this slide is in Shakespeare adaptations (another interest of mine). Shakespeare lends itself to different interpretations. You can do Hamlet on the moon and it will still work. That mostly depends on the day of the week. I seem to pick up new interests and hobbies all the time. There are a few constants, however. I love British history; particularly the monarchy. I focus the most on the Tudors. Hand-in-hand with this is my love of period dresses. I can't stand watching a movie or TV show where the costuming is not period accurate. It takes me completely out of the movie. I mean, if you're going to go through the effort of making a movie why not hire a costumer who can do a bit of research to make it accurate? The only time I let this slide is in Shakespeare adaptations (another interest of mine). Shakespeare lends itself to different interpretations. You can do Hamlet on the moon and it will still work. Just because his plays were performed in the clothing of the time doesn't mean it can't be done in other ways. <br />

For as long as I can remember, I have been interested in the grammatical side of language arts. I would sit on the school bus, pondering the etymology of words like happy, happen, and perhaps, for example. Before college, such topics were lumped together with reading and creative writing (which I enjoy, but don't enjoy studying) under "English class." Fortunately, when my friends and I were signing up for classes for our 2nd semester of college, one of them found a class that looked interesting - Intro to Linguistics - and asked me to take it with him. He was not pleased when I aced it and he only got a B! That was how I discovered that all the fascinating aspects of language fall under a single educational category, with none of the fluff that would have gone along with "English Major." Sela Narian is an {{as}} of the {{brown2}} with nine years of Tower membership and several staff, admin and executive administration contributions. She currently serves as {{head}} of the {{brown2}}. IRL, she is a freelance copywriter and editor who writes fiction in her spare time. She performs at conventions in the Wheel of Time group, The Flaming Sisters, with [[Eleyan Teyal Al'Landerin]], singing songs they co-wrote. Sela is the creator, writer and director of The Wheel of Time Interpretive Dance: The Eye of the World, an insane show which has performed multiple times at Dragon*Con and JordanCon.<br />

Sela is first-sister to [[Ne'mireth Simoua]] and sister-in-law to [[Toral Delvar]]. She exists as one half of the HinJew, a supernatural synthesis of [[Zashara Da'sainne]]'s and Sela's souls which makes them both terrifying and magnificent. She is {{bond}}ed to [[Darim Pelegro]] of {{MDD}} and consequently to [[Pylar al'Stnap]] of the {{brown2}}, Darim's other excellent bondmate. Pylar and Sela schemed this double bonding on their own and fortunately, Darim was amenable. They support him in all unholy campaigns he pursues and have no doubt that he will rule a moderate portion of the world when the Breaking comes again.<br />

==Who Am I== <br />
I'm a writer of many genres, especially fantasy and romance. My current work is a young adult novel about a teenage girl who belongs to a secret time traveling guild. I'm in revision stages with it.<br />
<br />
I am Customer Success Manager at a software company that provides solutions for appointments and scheduling. I talk to customers about prospective accounts, I troubleshoot their support issues, I reach out through social media, I write software documentation and blog posts. I comb the software with my editor's hat on, looking for ways to improve the text and make things clearer and more usable. It is a pretty awesome job and I love it.<br />

I am obsessed with words in numerous forms and disciplines: languages, historical linguistics, etymology, history of the alphabets, fiction writing, essay writing, journaling, technical writing, graphic design of text, acting through expression of words...I could go on and on. I love studying the stories of words and letters.<br />

I studied ancient languages and civilizations at the University of Iowa. I enjoy singing, acting, guitar and piano. I taught a theater workshop for elementary school kids.<br />

I also started a Wheel of Time singing group with Eleyan al'Landerin called the Flaming Sisters. We dress up as a Brown and Green Aes Sedai and sing WoT-themed bawdy pub songs (during which we are incredibly dignified) and ballads. We write our own lyrics and most of our own music.<br />

I've written and directed Wheel of Time Interpretive Dance: The Eye of the World, which was performed at Dragon*Con twice and JordanCon once so far. I hope to find time to adapt more of the books. <br />

Hmmm. Well I’ve been around the tower since about 2004 and I’ve been around the<br />
block, as my Who’s Who page can tell you. I ended up in Brown, because the Ajah fit<br />
me. My impression of the Browns was that they are chill and laid-back, with a wicked<br />

(This position has been incorporated into the duties of the Brown Heart as of 2011)<br />

The main purpose of this position is to make sure that all the members of the Brown Ajah are kept in touch with one another. To do this it is the Sister's duty to contact each of the Brown members every other month or so to see how they are doing. She checks in with every Brown to offer her services as a Sister and friend by listening, offering advice when appropriate, and celebrating joys or consoling sorrows. Once she learns a little about what each of the brown members has been up to she writes up a small newsletter and posts it in the Brown Chambers so that all the other Brown Sisters are able to keep in the loop of what is going on with each other. This helps not only those that are active, but those that have been on LOA, or who are just not as active as they would like to be, keep up on the happenings of the Ajah. The Browns at [[TarValon.net]] are a wonderfully unique group of ladies. There are many personalities all mixed together, but there is one common bond that holds everyone together. Knowledge. The Browns adore knowledge, whether it is in books, articles in the library, or other internet resources; the Browns have an unquenchable thirst for gaining more knowledge. Many of the members are still in school, or like to take additional courses on the side, or will quickly snap up a new book to learn new things. We pride ourselves on our knowledge and have started writing up little essays on things we have the most interest in. You can find the Brown Studies linked on our homepage. The Browns are a friendly and laid back bunch and you can always count on them to say something witty and funny.<br />
