General

Aemlyn Carand is an Andoran noble and the High Seat of House Carand, one of the stronger Houses in Andor (TFoH, Ch. 19; TFoH, 17). She is married to Lord Culhan (LoC, Ch. 28).

Aemlyn is plump, and her hair is graying (TPoD, Ch. 17; TPoD, Ch. 18).

Timeline

  • On orders from Gaebril/Rahvin, Morgase exiles Aemlyn Carand and several other Andoran nobles who were loyal to her (TFoH, Ch. 19).
  • Egwene is told that there is a nearby army consisting of Andorans and Murandians. Arathelle and Pelivar are in charge. Although Aemlyn's name is not mentioned here, we later learn that she is with them. Egwene wants to meet with them (TPoD, Ch. 15).
  • Siuan tells Egwene that Aemlyn, Arathelle and Pelivar are on their way to the meeting with the Salidar Aes Sedai (TPoD, Ch. 16).
  • Arathelle speaks for the Andorans, telling Egwene and the Sitters that they are there to make sure that there is not a war between Aes Sedai on Andoran soil. Aemlyn nods in agreement with Pelivar when he tells Egwene that he would rather die defending his lands and people there than where his lands and people will die as well (TPoD, Ch. 17).
  • After Egwene makes her announcement about the Salidar army staying in Murandy for a month and the novice book being open to women of all ages, Talmanes tells her that she has changed the border between Andor and Murandy; the Andoran nobles will stay where they are until the Salidar Aes Sedai leave, and after a month of them being there, the maps will begin to show that part of Murandy as belonging to Andor. Egwene begins to notice that the Murandian nobles are deferring to the Andoran nobles in an attempt to befriend them. Among other things, she sees Donel bow to Aemlyn (TPoD, Ch. 18).
  • Aemlyn questions Egwene about her announcement on the novice book being open to anyone. She shakes her head at the answer (TPoD, Ch. 18).
  • Birgitte tells Elayne and Dyelin that Aemlyn crossed the border between Murandy and Andor four days ago. Arathelle and Pelivar have also crossed the border, but the three are not together. Dyelin tells Elayne that they might be moving back to their estates, and that if they keep moving further apart, they will know for certain. Elayne hopes that they are indeed going to their estates, and will not ride towards Caemlyn. Dyelin tells Elayne that if they begin moving towards Caemlyn, then they are hoping that Luan, Abelle and/or Ellorien will be joining them. Elayne says that they must find a way to stop them from reaching Caemlyn (CoT, Ch. 14).

Relationships

During the Succession, Aemlyn supported Morgase for the Lion Throne. Later, on orders from Gaebril/Rahvin, Morgase has her exiled. Aemlyn no longer wants a Trakand on the throne (TFoH, Ch. 19; CoT, Ch. 14).

Aemlyn supports Dyelin Taravin for the Lion Throne. Elayne thinks to herself that Aemlyn, Arathelle and Pelivar seem willing to try to force her onto the throne (TPoD, Ch. 28; CoT, Ch. 14).

Aviendha seems to think of Aemlyn, Arathelle and Pelivar as enemies (CoT, Ch. 14).

Elenia Sarand hopes that Aemlyn might support her for the throne (CoT, Ch. 15).

Miscellaneous

  • Morgase learns that Aemlyn is among the nobles who have not knelt to Rand (LoC, Ch. 9).
  • Aemlyn and Culhan Carand are nearly as powerful as Pelivar Coelan (LoC, Ch. 28).
  • During the meeting between the Andoran/Murandian nobles and the Salidar Aes Sedai, Arathelle, Aemlyn and Pelivar seem to think that Egwene is just mouthing the words the Sitters have put on her tongue (TPoD, Ch. 17).
  • Egwene thinks to herself that while Arathelle and Aemlyn hold more power than most of the men, it is Pelivar and Culhan who ride with the soldiers; she wonders what the men think of their "agreement", where the Salidar Aes Sedai will stay put for a month and then leave Murandy and not bother Andor (TPoD, Ch. 18).
  • Dyelin tells Elayne that, at the moment, her biggest worries are Aemlyn, Arathelle and Pelivar, and that Ellorien and Luan, who Dyelin thinks are still behind Elayne, might go over to them; they think Dyelin should have the throne (TPoD, Ch. 28).

Quotes

"There have been arrivals in the city, my Lord Dragon, which Lord Bashere thought you should be told of as soon as possible. Lady Aemlyn and Lord Culhan entered yesterday at noon, and are staying with Lord Pelivar. Lady Arathelle came an hour later, with a large retinue. Lord Barel and Lord Macharan, Lady Sergase and Lady Negara entered separately in the night, with only a few retainers each. None has presented their respects at the Palace." (Reene Harfor to Rand; Lord of Chaos, Chapter 28).

"Elayne had never read of any queen being forced onto the throne -- that sort of thing might not have made it into the histories in any case -- yet Aemlyn, Arathelle and Pelivar seemed willing to try, and not for hope of power for themselves. Dyelin did not want the throne, but she would hardly be a passive ruler. The simple fact was that Morgase Trakand's final year had been marred by blunder after blunder, and few knew or believed that she had been a captive of one of the Forsaken during that time. Some Houses wanted anyone except another Trakand on the throne. Or thought they did." (Elayne; Crossroads of Twilight, Chapter 14).
