The Bore is the name given to the hole drilled into the Dark One's prison during the Age of Legends in an attempt to find a new source of power that could be accessed by both men and women, without the difficulties imposed by having to work together with saidin and saidar. The project, at the Collam Daan, in the floating structure known as the Sharom, sought to bore a hole through a thinness in the pattern. The resulting backlash destroyed the Sharom (TSR, Ch. 26, TWoRJTWoT, Ch. 4), though some of the researchers, such as Lanfear and Beidomon (Robert Jordan Question of the Week) survived. Following this, the Dark One was able to influence the world and enhance baser emotions, such as greed and jealousy in a period known as the Collapse.

Toward the end of the War of the Shadow, Lews Therin developed a plan to defeat the Dark One by sealing up the Bore. Due to dangers associated with the plan, no women agreed and so it was just a group of men, the Hundred Companions, who placed the seven seals and ended the war. This strike was at the location where the thinness in the pattern could be felt, Shayol Ghul, the are around which had transformed from an idyllic paradise to a desolate waste due to the Dark One's corrupting influence (TWoRJTWoT, Ch. 4)
