Book review by Ismene Sedai

Free For All: Oddballs, Geeks, and Gangstas in the Public Library by Don Borchert

Probably most controversial in library circles is the fact that while Borchert claims the title of "librarian" he does not in fact hold the professional degree that is usually required for such a job. Nevertheless, Borchert nails it: dealing with the homeless, dealing with abandoned kids, dealing with anything and everything. This tell-all memoir truly pulls aside the curtain for the state of affairs in public libraries today. He does it with a light sense of humour and a terrific "full-circle" style. I especially enjoyed the story of Anjelica -- a problem patron with outstanding fines and multiple accounts. It doesn't hit you until the end of the tale that her continual hijinks, thievery and lies actually takes place over 25 years.

Most readers will find stories of the library as an unsafe place for children shocking, but I found myself nodding my head in agreement, over and over again. Highly recommended for anybody who is considering working in a library, or even just visiting one.

Brown-outs of the month

Je t’aime:

“I just had one actually. I went to put up my new Lex Luthor Avi for Shaoman and I am not used to chaning my avi very often so I put it in the Sig box and only realized it when I went to look at a thread and there it was along with my old one lol.”

We also had a collective one this month. We talked about entering us in the Shaoman group avatar competition, but in the end nobody remembered to do it. We were famous literary villains, if you’re wondering
