History of the Graytling

A tradition dating back to 2008 when Kitan was still an Aspirant of the Gray Ajah. As a raising project she started the idea of giving Aspirants "Graytlings", little baby animals. While Kitan is no longer with the Ajah, the tradition stuck and now when ever we have a new Aspirant, they are gifted with a baby animal chosen by their Gray Guide and fellow Aspirants.

Grays and their Graytlings

Aintza

Graytling: Baby maned wolf

"A part of this is because I know VC and us fought over her (and Red and the maned wolf is red-ish :p) It's also very much one of a kind (Genetics prove it's not a wolf OR fox, the the only member of it's genus), just like Aintza is one of a kind."

Graytling: Baby orca

"Orcas are matrilineal and babies are cared for by the whole group of females, though a baby orca will always have a strong bond with its mother. They are very family-based animals and are protective of their own. Some babies grow into independent orcas that will leave and start their own pod, but others stay with their mothers and grandmothers and have their own children within this close-knit family group. Their sophisticated hunting techniques are considered by many scientists to be a clear example of animal 'culture'. Some indigenous groups believe the orca is the reincarnated soul of dead family members and their appearance is a sign of good fortune."

Graytling: Baby bunny

"Rabbits are extremely smart and have good memories (and we all know Elyss is brilliant and whatnot) Although rabbits are often shy, they are very affectionate with those in their group and will communicate in a variety of ways including vocally. (Elyss is generally kind of shy, but is not afraid to speak up and is especially affectionate with those she cares about). Rabbits also work hard or get bored, have an incredible knowledge of their environment and surroundings, and alert others when there is danger. Rabbits have long been regarded as symbols of purity and rebirth as well as representations of graciousness, kindness, sensitivity, compassion, tenderness and elegance. And since I have had the privilege of knowing her since birth and watching her grow I am amazed at just how true all of these are for this special young woman.

Ilverin

Graytling: Baby octopus

"Octopuses* are SUPER smart, super interesting, and super adaptable - all things that are also true of our Ilverin. They have 8 tentacles so they are excellent at multitasking; Ilverin has her hands in TONS of things all the time and she always seems to be able to keep everything running smoothly, so clearly this is a good fit for her. Some octopuses can change color to match their surroundings, and if an octopus somehow loses a limb, they can grow it back. Ilverin can't do those things (darn!) but she IS very adaptable! Octopuses are very curious and are great escape artists - when they're kept in an aquarium, the keepers have to continually change out their toys, and also make sure their tanks are locked down tight all the time. Ilverin is also very curious, likes to learn and explore (her recent experiences with GeoGuessr come to mind), and I'm sure she'd be able to find a way out of any situation she didn't want to be in

/*No matter how much I want the plural of octopus to be octopii, according to this expert the correct word is octopuses, which just sounds ridiculous. "

Graytling: Baby pterodactyl

"The Pterodactyl may be extinct, but what does that matter in the turning of the Wheel? They have all the whimsy of a dragon or unicorn with the added excitement that they are/were real creatures. I think this balance between the unbelievable and the real, of mystery and discovery, is an apt metaphor for Gray and our newest Graytling."

Tyla

GraytlingTyla.png

Graytling: Baby goat

"With usable fleece for spinning and knitting, Tyla is more than just a cute face. She's likes to bounce around (jump Ajah's :p) but in the end she will always find her home here in Gray. She is playful, fun (as by her creative nature in coming up with our first Mad Scientist), srs bzns, and all the things that Gray stands for!"
