Lenn is a character from stories that are told by Gleemen, like Thom. Apparently, he flew to the moon in the belly of an eagle of fire, and his daughter Salya walked among the stars (The Eye of the World, Chapter 4).
Lan tells Rand that if he believes he can escape from the Amyrlin Seat, then he believes he can fly to the moon like Lenn (The Great Hunt, Chapter 7).
Thom says that the stories of Lenn and Salya are old, from the Age before the Age of Legends, or perhaps even older (The Eye of the World, Chapter 4).
According to the website "Seven Spokes", Robert Jordan has confirmed that Lenn refers to John Glenn, the Astronaut (http://www.sevenspokes.com/chronology/1st.html)
