Chapter Icon: A Dragon

Points of View: Egwene, Nesune

Outline

Egwene visits Rand's rooms and witnesses a meeting between three Aes Sedai sent by the Tower and the Dragon Reborn. Her presence has been noticed by the Aes Sedai.

Summary

Egwene's Point of View:

Setting: Cairhien

Characters: Egwene, Rand, Surandha, Estair, Somara, Maric, Coiren, Galina, Nesune

Egwene is just returning from a meeting with Gawyn Trakand, who had told her that Aes Sedai loyal to Elaida are looking for her. As she makes her way amongst the Aiel tents outside the city, Surandha, Sorilea's apprentice, calls to her to join the other apprentices in one of the tents - all have a day off because of a meeting between the Wise Ones. Egwene sits between Surandha and another apprentice, Estair.

Talk turns to the Aes Sedai from the Tower in the city; the Wise Ones are meeting about them, and that Rand had returned to Cairhien to meet with the sisters, too.

Egwene excuses herself from the tent a moment later, and heads straight to the Sun Palace. She commands one of the servants to lead her to Rand's rooms. She enters after a brief exchange between herself, Somara, and Maric, Aiel set to guard Rand's door. Egwene and Rand speak of Aes Sedai, and trust. Abruptly, Somara peeks into the room and notifies them that the Aes Sedai are there, early. Rand orders Egwene into his bedroom and weaves saidar around her to make her invisible, then bids the Aes Sedai to enter.

Three Aes Sedai enter; Coiren, Nesune, and an Aes Sedai whom Egwene does not know, who later turns out to be Galina. They bring chests with them, which Rand and Egwene learn contain a fortune when they are opened, after Coiren tells Rand of Elaida's offer - that he come to the Tower, which offers him protection, and the full weight of its authority and support.

Rand says that he will go as soon as he is able, and dismisses the Aes Sedai, telling them not to come closer to the palace than a mile, for their own safety. When they leave, Egwene briefly discusses the visit, then exits, too.

Nesune's Point of View:

Setting: Cairhien

Characters: Coiren, Galina, Nesune

The three Aes Sedai are in a coach, leaving the Palace. They discuss Egwene's presence - Nesune sensed her ability to channel - and decide it is either Moiraine, or the rumored mysterious Green sister. The chapter closes with Nesune's thought on writing a paper about Rand.

Visions and Prophecies

Egwene's Dreams
  • "She had had another hazy almost nightmare about it; every time one of them said a word, they tripped and fell on their faces or dropped a cup or plate or knocked over a vase, always something that shattered on impact. Since interpreting the dream about Gawyn becoming her Warder she had been making an effort at all of them. To no real effect so far, but she was sure that one had meaning."
the Karaethon Cycle
  • "The unstained tower breaks and bends knee to the forgotten sign"

This would be the White Tower.
