Beyond the Gate

Chapter Icon: Flame of Tar Valon

Points of View: Perrin, Rand, Demira

Outline

Perrin is approved as Faile's husband by her parents. Demira Sedai is attacked by people looking like Aiel and warned to stay away from Rand.

Summary

Perrin's Point of View:

Setting: The Royal Palace, Caemlyn

Characters: Perrin, Rand, Davram Bashere, Faile, Deira Bashere

As Perrin leaves Rand's rooms, he sees Davram Bashere - who smells strongly of cold fury. He approaches Bashere, who simply says they need to talk.

When they reach a sitting room, they begin to speak of Perrin and Faile's marriage - she is too young to marry without permission. Bashere says that if Faile does not prove that she was indeed old enough to marry to her mother, and Perrin doesn't prove himself to Bashere, that Faile will suffer immense punishment, and Davram will kill Perrin. Perrin replies that if he takes Faile, he will simply take her back. After some discussion, however, the Saldaean decides Perrin is alright; they go to meet Faile and her mother.

When Perrin and Bashere enter the room where the two women are, Perrin sees his wife and mother-in-law - both have slap marks on one cheek. Faile hugs her father when he enters, and whispers that it is up to Perrin, now.

After some talk, it is decided: Perrin is good enough.

Rand's Point of View:

Setting: The Royal Palace, Caemlyn

Characters: Rand, Min, Sulin

Rand has just bid farewell to Perrin, and he begins to think on how it would be easier to get Perrin to Tear if things didn't go well with Bashere.

Min enters the room, and tells him of a viewing - that there will be two occasions that if Perrin is not present, something bad will happen to Rand. Min then leaves, kissing him lightly. Rand thinks of her - then Lews Therin starts speaking to him again about Aes Sedai. Rand tries to wash the voice away with wine.

Demira Eriff's Point of View:

Location: Caemlyn

Characters: Demira Eriff

Demira Eriff, an Aes Sedai, stops within view of the Origan Gate leading to the New City; she does not go further because she does not have Rand's permission, and because Merana would skin her alive for entering. She is waiting for one of her agents from the library to come with books; however, he does not come, plainly not having received her message. She sighs, and slips into one of the alleys to get to her inn faster.

The alleys are near empty, except for stray cats and dogs. However, she rounds a corner, and comes face-to-face with several Aiel. She thinks that perhaps these were the ones that she thought were following her before. They make room for her to pass, and, as she does, a spear is thrust into her side; then darkness falls.

Perrin's Point of View:

Setting: The Royal Palace, Caemlyn

Characters: Perrin, Faile, Sulin

Perrin and Faile have finally left their meeting with her parents; he is drenched in sweat. Sulin is waiting for them, and leads them to their rooms. Perrin dismisses her with a gold coin.

As Perrin begins unbuttoning his wife's dress, he asks Faile what a broken crown is - Davram had mentioned it when they spoke - but she begins to smell upset, and changes the topic - apparently, Rand had left the palace. Faile suggests that she spy on Rand, for Perrin, but he makes her promise she will not. She then reminds him that her mother wants at least six grandchildren, and they get to work.

Demira's Point of View:

Location: Caemlyn

Characters: Demira, Stevan, Merana, Berenicia

Demira awakes, seeing her Warder - Stevan - and two other Aes Sedai, Merana and Berenicia, sitting near her. How she survived the attack is explained; a man had entered the common room, saying he had seen Aiel following an Aes Sedai - he had described Demira perfectly - and that they would kill her. At that moment, Stevan had felt the spear in his Aes Sedai's side, and he ran to find her, all but dragging Berenicia, of the Yellow Ajah, with him.

The man who had given the warning had not been caught, as the Aiel. Demira tells of the words the Aiel had growled before she blacked out: "Tell the other witches to stay away from al'Thor." They decide she was speared to hurt severely, but not kill.

Similarly, they draw to a conclusion that it was Rand who sent the Aiel; Demira suggests that they mention nothing, to make Rand sweat it out. Just then, Verin appears, motioning for Stevan to leave, and says she agrees with Demira; she also believes that the injured Aes Sedai can choose how al'Thor should be taught his lesson.

And so, Demira suggests that the embassy send nobody for a few days, to let him stew; watching Min will tell them how he is reacting.

Visions and Prophecies

Min's Viewings
  • (About Perrin) "He's found his falcon, and I wouldn't be surprised if she kills him when the hawk appears."
  • (About Rand and Perrin, to Rand) "When you two were together, I saw those fireflies and the darkness stronger than ever. But with the two of you in the same room, the fireflies were holding their own instead of being eaten faster than they can swarm, the way they do when you're alone. And something else I saw when you were together. Twice he's going to have to be there, or you-If he's not, something bad will happen to you. Very bad." Rand replies: "Then I'll just have to keep him around." Min's answer: "I don't know that that will be enough. It will happen if he is not there, but nothing I saw said it won't because he is. It will be very bad, Rand. Just thinking of that viewing makes me..."

Mysteries

Who sent the Aiel after Demira?

It seems likely they were not even Aiel.
