The Price of a Ship

Chapter Icon: A S'redit

Points of View: Nynaeve, Elayne

Summary

Nynaeve's Point of View:

Setting: Valan Luca's circus - Near Samara

Characters: Nynaeve, Elayne, Birgitte, Thom, Juilin, Galad, Petra, Clarine, Andaya Murasaka, Kuan Murasaka, Valan Luca and Cerandin

Nynaeve is in her wagon in the circus and has been there for three days, waiting for a ship to come in so that they can finally leave for Salidar. She's been having nightmares for the past days - about Moghedien, the prophet, Birgitte shooting arrows at her and not missing, and of Elaida being in charge in Salidar. She has also dreamed of Egwene and is confused as to why Egwene has been appearing in so many of her dreams. Nynaeve receives new clothes from Valan Luca, cut low and in bright colors. She is upset about having to wear them.

Elayne is in the wagon with Nynaeve. There has been tension between the two of them for the past three days, and they have been quarrelling a lot.

Elayne tells Nynaeve that she has been dreaming about Egwene as well. After comparing their dreams, they realize that they have both had the same dreams, and that, through the dreams, Egwene has been talking to them and updating them on Rand's victory in Cairhien.

Elayne convinces Nynaeve to use the ter'angreal ring to visit the Heart of the Stone in Tel'aran'rhiod in an attempt to try to meet with Egwene. Nynaeve is afraid to use it after her encounter with Moghedien in Tel'aran'rhiod.

Birgitte enters the wagon without knocking, and surprises Nynaeve, who in turn snaps at her. Birgitte snaps back and it takes Elayne to stop the two from quarrelling further.

Birgitte tells Elayne and Nynaeve that Thom and Juilin are back from Samara. Elayne and Nynaeve get upset since Thom and Juilin swore to obey them and they were not given permission to go, and no one would have known if anything happened to them.

Elayne, Nynaeve and Birgitte go to question Thom and Juilin. Both men are hurt and Thom is bleeding from a cut in his scalp. Elayne forgets her anger when she sees Thom and runs over to him to tend his wound. Nynaeve refuses to use Healing on the men, even though she is angry enough to channel.

Thom tells the girls that, "Samara's a school of silverpike around a chunk of bloody meat. There are mobs on every street hunting Darkfriends and anybody else who isn't ready to hail the Prophet as the one true voice of the Dragon Reborn."

Uno comes through the wagons to tell Elayne and Nynaeve that he has found a ship for them, but that it's going to be near impossible to get to it because of the riots in town. Nynaeve tells Uno that, nevertheless, she expects him to keep his word about getting to the ship. Elayne tries to flatter Uno and reminds him of the Shienaran's bravery and fighting skills. Birgitte gives Uno a back massage. Uno agrees to take them to the ship but tells them that there is fighting on the docks between the Prophet's men and the Whitecloaks, and that this is what started the riots in Samara.

Nynaeve realizes that she might have caused this by asking Galad to find a ship.

Galad comes to tell Nynaeve that he kept his word and secured a ship for them. He has paid for their passage on it, and the Whitecloaks are now holding it until they can get to it. Nynaeve is upset at Galad for not realizing the consequences of his actions and the riots it caused. Galad doesn't understand why Nynaeve is upset. His only thought is that he gave his word and kept it.

Valan Luca arrives, battered as well, and tells everyone that they are leaving Samara within the hour. Nynaeve tells Luca that they are not continuing with the circus and offers him the rest of the money she promised him. Luca refuses the money and asks Nynaeve to stay, telling her that he wants her to marry him and have his children. Nynaeve declines his offer, telling him that she is betrothed to another man. Luca agrees to let her leave but tells her that she is the only one for him, that he will find her again, and that she will choose him over Lan.

Elayne's Point of View:

Setting: Valan Luca's circus - Near Samara

Characters: Nynaeve, Elayne, Birgitte, Thom, Juilin, Galad, Petra, Clarine, Andaya Murasaka, Kuan Murasaka, Valan Luca and Cerandin

Elayne tries to persuade Cerandin, the s'redit handler, to come with them on the ship. Cerandin refuses to leave the s'redit behind in the hands of people who are afraid of them. Elayne tells Cerandin that she is the Daughter-Heir of Andor, but Cerandin doesn't believe her. Elayne tries to take Cerandin with her by force but Cerandin twists her arm. Birgitte stands there without doing anything or trying to help.

Elayne confronts Birgitte but finds out that Birgitte doesn't believe her either. She gets angry, screams in frustration, and strides away.
