Chapter 9: Tangles

Val a'Shain

Characters: Perrin, Faile, Aram, Basel Gill, Sebban Bawler, Tallanvor, Havien Nurelle, Edarra, Seonid

Setting: Perrin's camp near the town of Bethal in Ghealdan

Point of view: Perrin

When Perrin wakes up the next morning Faile is already up and about. Most of the camp is waking up and Perrin goes out to find some breakfast. Perrin gets annoyed again that people simply will not let him do anything for himself. Aram, who appeared at his side the moment he left his tent explains that people will think he doesn't trust them or that he thinks they don't do a good job if they don't let them take care of it. Faile had already said something similar.

Perrin spots master Gill and goes to have a word with him. Faile made him shambayan, which means he is now responsible with supplying Perrin with his personal needs. Faile gave him a list of things he should try to get in Bethal. Perrin doesn't see the need but considers it one minor annoyance to put up with. Bawler also decided to stay. He is now their personal secretary. When Perrin talks to him it becomes clear Bawler knows a lot of potentially useful things. Perrin also figured out Bawlers hates the Whitecloaks and then he knows Perrin had problems with them too. Perrin still thinks there is more to this group than he knows and sends Aram to talk to Tallanvor and Gill. Perrin himself head towards the Aiel tents.

Before he can get there though Havien Nurelle intercepts him. Perrin and Havien inspect the Mayerer camp. It's a lot more orderly than the Two Rivers camp. Havien brings up the Aiel treatment of the Aes Sedai in their care. It is making the Mayeners uneasy. Perrin compliments the Mayeners and says he will bring it up with the Wise Ones.

Perrin's meeting with the Wise Ones is, as always, challenging. Edarra points out that Perrin must kill Masema. The Dreamerwalkers have told them so. Perrin refuses, again, that is not what Rand sent him here to do. When Perrin brings up their treatment of Aes Sedai the conversation gets even more unpleasant. They tell him in no uncertain terms it is none of his business. One of the captures Aes Sedai, Seonid, even tells him he is not to interfere. The Wise Ones bring the conversation back to the Prophet again. The ask Perrin to explain why wants to keep Masema alive. Perrin gives it another go.
