I had a tremendously hard time deciding on an Ajah. In the end I chose Blue because I feel a sense of independence here. With most other Ajahs, there is a dominant vibe/culture that I could easily fall in with, were I so inclined, but none of them fully defined me as a person. I like being able to go my own way, get caught up in what interests me, and still have a sense of camaraderie with others. Blue gives me that.

Manipulation is something we all do just by living, whether we realize it or not. But do I deliberately set out on a recognized course of action in pursuit of a desired goal or resolution? Sure! All the time! I would rather have a hand in the development and outcome of something than leave it to chance or others. I'm more of a homebody than a traveler though.

I got off to a rocky start with the Wheel of Time. I stumbled across a paperback copy of ''The Shadow Rising'' when I was in junior high, and I couldn't stand it. So many characters, and I had no clue what any of them were doing. I didn't have access to the first three, so after finishing that one I gave up on it. Sometime in 1995 (because that's when ''Lord of Chaos'' was published, and I remember seeing it on the shelf in hardback at a store) a librarian friend of mine pushed the series on me when I was whining about having nothing to read. This was a different library, and they had books 1-5. I read the first and was immediately hooked. I read those 5, got my greedy paws on the 6th, and have read them all as they've come out ever since.

Please remember that all your interactions, whether in General or in Senior Members, should conform to our Code of Conduct. In most forums, Citizens, Resident Citizens, and Junior Members must use the titles of Senior Members. Please keep spam (i.e. posts that have no point) to a minimum, particularly in forums that have a specific purpose.

The Classroom is home to the classes that are available for members of the Tower. Citizens can see and follow along with the classes but cannot participate--that is a privilege only for Novices/Recruits and up. Generally, Accepted/Soldiers teach classes for the Novices/Recruits, but occasionally a Senior Member will teach a class that is open to all Junior Members. These classes are not mandatory to be raised within the Tower; they are meant to be a resource. Novice, Recruit, Accepted, Soldier, Aes Sedai, and Gaidin usergroups can post in this forum. Citizens may read the forum but cannot post.

These forums are for planning our official and unofficial events.

===Official Party forums===

Forums for our official events are put into place 3-6 months before the event. The forum description will include the dates and location of the event. Each forum will include information about the event, such as how to register, how much your ticket will cost, what the ticket will include, other pertinent information, and lots of posts about how excited we are about the upcoming event. Sometimes more personal information, such as phone numbers, is posted in these forums; please respect that information.

===Local Functions===

While a good portion of our members have not attended an official function, a significant portion of our members have met others through unofficial local functions. Many such get-togethers are posted in our Local Functions forum. These events are not hosted by TarValon.Net. All events posted in this forum are considered to be open invitation, meaning that you cannot discriminate who can come based on any federally protected status or any status mentioned in our Bylaws. If you want to be selective as to who may attend, you should use alternate methods for planning your event.

===City Hall===

City Hall is the administrative forum for the City and its Citizens. This forum is mainly used to house important information for Citizens (such as Citizen clean-ups or how to apply to the Tower) and to inform Citizens that they have been called to the Tower. Please only post things related to the administrative workings of the City in this forum. Citizen, Accepted, Soldier, Aes Sedai, and Gaidin usergroups can post in this forum. Novice and Recruit usergroups can see but not post in this forum. If you have been called to the Tower, do not post in this forum, even if you are still in the Citizen usergroup!

===The Olde Warder and Hen===

The Olde Warder and Hen has been a staple at TarValon.Net since its inception. This forum is one of our most laid-back forums. People from all ranks come together to have fun and just hang out. It's a good place to get to know the Ajahs and Companies as well--each group has a table for themselves. Citizen, Accepted, Soldier, Aes Sedai, and Gaidin usergroups have access to this forum.

===The Apartments===

This forum has appeared and disappeared a few times at TarValon.Net. Now it is back to provide a place for those who are long-time members to mingle. Senior Citizens, Aes Sedai, and Gaidin usergroups have access to this forum.

===Faire Grounds===

The Faire Grounds only show up for festivals and freedays or freeweeks. Guidelines for this forum change based on the holiday, so be sure to read the stickies when it shows up! All registered users have access to this forum.

TarValon.Net has six Guilds, and their forums are located here. All usergroups can post in these forums; however, one of the perks of being a member of a Guild is that you have the ability to start threads in your own Guild. Each Guildmaster has posted how you can become a member of their Guild in their respective forums. At this time, you may only belong to one Guild.

During TarValon.net's early years, a freeweek was a time during either a real life or The Wheel of Time holiday when members from all ranks came together to celebrate and have a good time on the boards and in chat. These freeweeks would also sometimes coincide with our real life events to help include those not attending in a sense of community and camaraderie. Novices were allowed into the Garrison and Recruits into the Hallways, and both were allowed into the City. Everyone was encouraged to make merry with their own choice of spirit despite their rank. Ajahs and Companies would plan contests and activities geared towards their genre of expertise or participate as groups in site wide competitions, such as avatar theme contests for Halloween or Christmas.

In recent years, however, the freeweek has taken on a slightly different form. The Departments of Community Development and Marketing now has an array of administrators and staff dedicated to planning and coordinating much of the events that previously had no management. These events are held in the Frivolous Fun forum, which is taken over for the events. The number of 'official' events has also been limited to approximately four a year, so as to keep up interest in the membership and make them feel more special upon each occurrence. Four official festivals occur throughout the year, one in each of the four seasons which generally correlate to some holiday in The Wheel of Time's Farede Calendar. Smaller events may occur througout the year, but do not often merit a freeweek. Groups in membership also plan specialized events throughout the year, and the Amyrlin may decree a freeday whenever she wishes.

Recruits, Novices, Soldiers, and Accepted are no longer given access to their counterpart's private forums; all celebrating takes place in Frivolous Fun. However, within the forum, all discrimination by rank and class is forgotten, and members are encouraged to speak freely and to have a good time however they please with other members.

Freedays/freeweeks are usually very chaotic. Pranks and spamming are part of the typical fare. In addition to atypical posting, avatars and signatures are often altered or wildly different (though the only times you are allowed to completely change your avatar to something different is during our Fall festival or with the express permission of your membership administrator). Occasionally even the graphics at the top and side of the forums are changed as well. Should you enter the forums and find things look all out of sorts, please remain calm and look in the General forum for details as to what exactly is going on.

==What activities occur at events?==

Part of the fun at our events is our traditional activities such as the opening ceremonies & toast, fundraising efforts and official membership ceremonies such as raisings and bondings. The anniversary party also traditionally includes the Amyrlin's Court and Tournament. Each event also usually has activities that are specific to that location.

==Opening Ceremonies==

Our opening ceremonies occur at every official event and consist of a brief history of our community, a Goldschlagger toast, and real life ceremonies. The highest ranking Officer, Director, or administrator officiates the opening ceremonies. These occur at every official function. There are three real life ceremonies that occur:

#Raising Ceremonies – Community Members may, if attending a real-life event close to their raising date, be called to be raised in person rather than take the online test. They must meet all requirements for raising to the next level and must already be approved by the Hall. A Community Member may not apply to be raised in person; this ceremony happens by invitation only. Telling the administration that you want to be raised in person will almost certainly guarantee that you are not invited to participate in a raising ceremony.
#Bonding Ceremony – Two persons who have decided to become bonded partners may apply to have a real-life ceremony to celebrate their new friendship. Interested parties need to contact the Director of Membership within one month of the event where they wish to have this ceremony performed. Only limited spaces are available.
#Marriage Ceremony – If two Community Members are already married or will be married within three months of the event they will be attending, they may choose to have an additional marriage ceremony performed at a real-life event. These are not legally binding ceremonies and are meant to be symbolic only. Interested parties need to contact the Keeper within one month of the event where they wish to have this ceremony performed. Only limited spaces are available.

==The Amyrlin's Court and Tournament==

The Amyrlin's Court and Tournament usually occurs during our Anniversary party. We all dress up in costume (ie, clothing that looks like it could exist in The Wheel of Time world). The ladies sit together with the Amyrlin as her Court and oversee the Tournament, which consists of a variety of athletic pursuits such as archery and wrestling. Both men and women are welcome to participate, provided that they are over 18 years old and have signed the appropriate waivers. After the events have occurred, awards are given.

==Fundraising==

Because we are a volunteer organization with no regular means of making enough money to cover our operating costs, we have fundraising at many of our official functions.

Examples of our past fundraising activities include:

*Auctions of services--volunteers auction off specific services (serenades, meals, personal time, etc). This used to be our da'covale auction, but after the 2011 administrative meeting, our auctions are now held primarily for specific services.
*Raffles--the administration procures various items of interest and raffle them off.
*Silent Auctions--the administration gathers items and holds a silent auction.

All proceeds from fundraisers go to the Tower.

The Robert Jordan Memorial Scholarship is an annual scholarship awarded to a fan of the Wheel of Time who is an undergraduate student at an accredited college or university. Previously called the Servant of All Scholarship, it was renamed in 2007 to memorialize Robert Jordan's life. In 2010, the scholarship was opened to all Wheel of Time fans, instead of being restricted to TarValon.Net members.

Any student who is a current undergraduate at an accredited college or university and can write in the English language qualifies. Previous recipients can reapply as long as they are still eligible.

==What is the amount of the scholarship?==

The amount of the scholarship varies from year to year, and depends on the amount of donations received that year, both to the general funds of TarValon.Net, Inc. and to the scholarship fund directly. The actual amount is determined by the Officers and Director of Community Outreach, but is anticipated at between $250-$1000 USD annually.

==The Administrative Meeting==

Once a year, TarValon.Net has an Administrative Meeting. It usually takes place attached to an event held in the spring. This is often when the official annual Board of Directors meeting is also held. The Board, Officers, Executives, and select administrators are invited to this meeting, where they deliberate upon strategies which might have impact on the Administrative and Community Membership structures in the coming year.

The Admin Meeting is an opportunity to achieve important changes to the site. TarValon.Net has always been in a constant process of evolution, as it improves its operations so it may serve the wider community in philanthropy and its members as a growing community. Every variation to existing procedure is introduced and established in order to enhance and improve our site, so it may test and stretch its boundaries as the leading philanthropy community in The Wheel of Time fandom.

Generally a week or two before the meeting, a tentative agenda is given to the Departments so that staff and administrators in the administration may give input on the proposed subjects for discussion. Our annual membership survey is also usually conducted in time for this meeting so that those present at the meeting can obtain a general feeling of the community about a variety of selected issues. These issues will usually be discussed in some manner at the Admin Meeting.

The meeting is usually a minimum of eight hours, and at times has lasted as long as eleven hours. It encompasses all Administrative issues which are up for discussion. The data compiled from the Annual Membership Survey is also reviewed.

The majority of the meeting involves minor aspects of each Department, tending to involve discussion between the Officers, Directors, and any administrators or staff relevant to the current subject. This includes, among many other things, an appraisal of the budget, philanthropy goals, assessment of certain administrative positions and many other mundane issues which allow TarValon.Net to function smoothly and with maximum efficiency.

The Admin Meeting is also the time at which the CEO is able to describe any plans of future innovation, which allow our site to further its philanthropic aims and to continue serving its members as a fresh and ever-progressive community.

There are usually a number of policies instituted at the Admin Meeting which have a major impact upon the site. In the past, a few cases which were implemented as a result of discussion at Admin Meetings were the sharing of a bondmate’s Ajah/Company forum, evaluating members for raising to Senior Membership through the Hall rather than deliberation of either all Gaidin or all Aes Sedai, the Guesting program for Accepted/Soldiers and Voluntary Demotions for Senior Members.

After the meeting, the minutes are compiled and released to the administration so they can be current on the new policies. Once all administrators have had the chance to review the notes, the notes are released to the rest of the site through one or more posts made in the Site Announcements forum by either the CEO or COO.

Any posts made about newly updated procedures are not discussion or debate threads, but rather serve the function of announcing these changes to the site’s members. In a site as large and dynamic as our own, it is vital to remember that every modification to existing policy is the result of an issue which required improvement. These policies are adjusted or instituted in response to previous member feedback of which the Administration was informed through the Chain of Command or within the Administrative structure or by the membership poll.

Any who wish to communicate about these newly instituted policies may do so by contacting their Community Membership Admin, who will relay any relevant information through the Chain of Command. All policies are, as always, up for review in the subsequent year’s Admin Meeting.

Old MM: Membership Clean-Up

Once every one to two years, the Department of Membership holds a Community Membership clean-up to determine which members are inactive (excepting those who are currently on official Leaves of Absence), and who appear to not have an interest in continuing their membership in our community.

For a Tower membership clean-up, threads will be started around the boards asking for all Community Members to read and respond. The Captain of Recruits, Captain of Soldiers, Mistress of Novices and Mistress of Accepted will start threads in their respective forums, and the Director will start a thread for members in General. These threads will stay up for two to four weeks. During that time, all active members of the Tower should post in these threads. If you know of someone who is on a leave of absence, you may post for them as well.

After these threads have been up for a reasonable amount of time, the Department of Membership will work on compiling a list of those who have not responded and who are not on a leave of absence. The Director of Membership or the appropriate Community Membership administrator will then attempt to email this list of people. Up to three emails may be sent in an attempt to contact these Community Members. If there are other avenues to explore (relatives who are on the site, real life friends who are on the site), the Director and administrators will use those as well.

After all efforts have been made to contact these Community Members, a final list will be compiled of all of those who have not responded to any of our attempts to contact them. The Director will then remove these Community Members from our membership databases. They will be removed from our Who's Who and from all usergroups on the boards.

Junior Members who want to return after they have been removed in a clean-up lose their rank and must return as [[Citizens]]. Senior Members who want to return may do so as a Senior Member and should contact their Community Membership administrator to be added back into their respective forums.

For a City clean-up, the Mayor will post in the City Hall. The procedure is similar-—all Citizens will have two to four weeks to respond to the thread. At the end of that time, all [[Citizens]] who did not respond will be removed from the Citizens/Resident Citizens usergroups. Should a [[Citizen]] wish to return, an email to the [mailto:mayor@tarvalon.net Mayor] will result in a re-instatement of the Citizen's rank and usergroup permissions.

One of the key things that is looked for in each applicant is whether or not they have been a contributing Community Member. While a couple of things that are valid contributions are mentioned in this manual, it is not a complete listing. Please view the portion of the Membership Manual about [[Contributions]] for a more complete discussion of what contributions are.

==Applications for Novice or Recruit==

After an application has been submitted to join the Tower, the Mayor contacts the two Senior Members referenced in the Citizen’s application. After the recommendations on the particular Citizen have been received, the Mayor takes the application to the Hall. This takes place in a private forum "Hall of the Tower."

To give an example of the application process: If Egwene al’Vere were up for raising, the Mayor would post a thread entitled “Egwene al’Vere for Novice.” The post would include her avatar, real first name, birth date, join date and link to her forum profile. Underneath are her answers to the questions in the application. Underneath that are her two references from Senior Members, Moiraine Sedai and Lan Gaidin.

When up for consideration of raising to Novice/Recruit, a Citizen's post history will be evaluated by members of the Hall. An issue often raised in the Hall is that of post activity. While there is no specific number of posts which is ideal, a Citizen should have a great deal of who they are represented in these posts. One thousand posts of nothing but an emoticon or a congratulations are not nearly as helpful as 100 or 200 posts that give more insight into one's personality.

One should keep in mind that the purpose of becoming a Community Member of the Tower (i.e. ‘Junior Member’) is to put oneself into a position ideal for contributing to positive interactions within the Tower, as well as having a greater opportunity to benefit from strengthened personal bonds. The Hall very carefully votes upon each member's raising, accepting those who are both friendly and dedicated. One may be friendly, but dedication is hard to discern from too few posts - or too many, if the post history consists of 'spam,' i.e. throw-away posts which show little to nothing of the Citizen's character. Either raise a red flag and could be grounds for denying the raising until the Citizen has contributed more posts which represent who he or she is as a person. A particularly positive recommendation from a Senior Member is also taken into consideration.

An ideal candidate for Novice or Recruit would be one who is familiar with the Tower rules (i.e. Chat Guidelines, Membership Manuals). He or she would already have had positive experiences interacting within the boards and among the Community Members. Communication in a respectful and mature fashion is key to any candidate's application. One who deliberately acts in a disruptive and/or disrespectful manner is not likely to be approved.

The process of acceptance/denial through the Tower takes an average of two weeks but could be longer or shorter. If the candidate is denied, the Mayor will tell him/her so in private and discuss what factors might be considered before applying again after a time. If the candidate is approved, the Mayor will post a thread with the subject of the Citizen’s name in the City Hall forum. This is the call to report oneself at the Tower. New novices report to the Mistress of Novices, and new Recruits to the Captain of the Guard.

The rank of Novice or Recruit is fundamentally a learning process. One is assigned a mentor, partakes in classes, and gets to know what interactions in the Tower are like on a day-to-day basis. After three months’ time, the novice or recruit has fulfilled the minimum amount of time required for raising and is eligible to be brought forth to the Hall, if the Mistress of Novices or Captain of Recruits has deemed them ready for raising to Accepted or Soldier. Once the Mistress of Novices or Captain of the Guard has received an application for Accepted/Soldier and s/he feels that the novice/recruit is ready, s/he starts a thread in the private forum “Hall of the Tower.”

To give an example of the raising process: If Gawyn Trakand felt he were ready for raising, he would send in an application to the Captain of Recruits (see the Captain's Office for details as to the particulars of this application). If he felt Gawyn was ready, the Captain of Recruits would start a thread in the Hall with the subject “Gawyn Trakand for Soldier.” Within the post would be his avatar, real first name, joining date, raising date, and link to his profile. Underneath this would be a statement which Gawyn would have sent the Captain of Recruits, explaining why he believed he was ready and willing to be raised to the rank of Soldier. Underneath this would be a personal recommendation from his mentor, and below this would be the personal recommendation of the Captain of Recruits.

One of the major factors of being raised to Accepted or Soldier is the level of interaction which one has had with other Community Members of the Tower. The step up in rank is one which greatly advances the Community Member’s capacity to intermingle among different Ajahs/Companies. One is granted privileged access into their respective sitting rooms or great halls as a guest and at times observes some of the more personal aspects of various Community Members in that Ajah or Company. Being raised to Accepted or Soldier is therefore an indication of trust and commitment.

Before one is raised to this level, then, the Hall must be sure that the member is committed, trustworthy, understands how the Tower is run and gets along well with others. The Hall also evaluates where the candidate has been posting.

A novice or recruit who has mostly remained in the Hallways or Barracks during tenure in the Tower is less likely to be approved for raising than a member who has posted in both the Tower and also in the general forums (such as General, Technology & Media etc., in places where one may interact with Community Members of all groups and ranks). Likewise, a Novice or Recruit who has not posted in the Hallways/Barracks hardly at all, posting only in the general forums, is less likely to be approved for raising, as he or she has not yet interacted altogether much with the groups to which he or she would one day aspire. Interaction with all groups available is highly recommended, so as to wholly realize one’s prospects.

It is therefore recommended to take full advantage of the access to the Tower which one has as a Novice or Recruit, but to also keep in mind that overall, the decision is based upon the way which one relates to others throughout the forum and with all ranks of membership. The majority of Hall members search for evidence in one’s posting history that this Community Member is involved, dedicated, genuine, friendly and, above all, forging worthy relationships among one’s fellow Community Members. The Tower is a community based upon mutual respect and friendship, and these values would ideally be evident in one of a mind to be raised to the level of Accepted/Soldier.

Another characteristic which sets some apart from others is activeness in the Classrooms. While not required, participation in the Classrooms is a positive indication of that Community Member’s interest in The Wheel of Time series, from which our community was established. In addition, Classroom participation often signifies to the Hall that the candidate is enthusiastic about the features available within the Tower and respectful of the structure set up for the various ranks.

An issue often raised in the Hall is that of post activity. While there is no specific number of posts which is ideal, a Novice/Recruit should have a great deal of who they are represented in these posts.

The majority of the time, this causes Hall members to deny their application, with the recommendation that he or she mingle a while longer and show that they are indeed still dedicated over a longer period of time (a month or two, depending upon the situation).

Once a Community Member is Accepted/Soldier, he or she is indeed ‘sealed to the Tower’ and has greater forum access than novices and recruits. The privilege of attaining this rank, which is just one step below Senior Member, is for those who have clearly proven themselves to be constant and committed members.

If a Community Member’s application is turned down, the Mistress of Novices or Captain of the Guard will tell him/her so in private and discuss what factors might be considered before applying again after a time. If the candidate is approved, the Mistress of Novices or Captain of the Guard will send a PM to that Community Member, with a summoning to take the raising test with a link.

==Candidates for Senior Membership==

When the Hall is asked to consider a candidate for Senior Member, one may be certain that the Community Member has been, in the eyes of his or her Community Membership administrator and Ajah/Company, a faithful, respectable and contributing member of the community for a substantial amount of time. For one to be raised through the ranks from new citizen to Senior Member takes seven months at the very least, though that short a time period occurs very rarely. It is not unusual for a Junior Member to have been an enduring and steadfast contributor to the site for years at a time.

There are many reasons why one might remain a Junior Member for an extended period of time. Some of the more common reasons for this are indecisiveness about choosing one’s Ajah/Company, waiting for the minimum age requirement for Senior Membership (seventeen), lacking the maturity expected from a Senior Member (which frequently has little to do with the member’s age), not being active enough in a broad enough spectrum of forums (i.e. only interacting within the threads and forum intended for one’s Ajah/Company – or only very few besides these), and going on an extended leave of absence (a month or longer) and only just returning.

The Hall determines each candidate's merits for raising in the specialized private forum, “Hall of the Tower.” To give an example of the raising process: Nynaeve al'Meara has been an Accepted for over the minimum period, and her Head of Ajah has decided that she is ready to take the final steps of becoming a Senior Member. The Head of the Yellows posts a locked thread in the forum seen only by Yellow Aes Sedai, stating that she planning to put up Nynaeve for raising to Aes Sedai, and that she is compiling recommendations to send to the Hall. It should be noted that this is not a vote; a unanimous agreement by the Ajah/Company members is neither required nor needed to put someone up for Senior Member. This thread is created for the purpose of receiving recommendations from other Community Members of the Ajah/Company to put forth for Hall consideration, as well as to obtain any important and relevant information about the candidate which might have been previously overlooked, which might bring into question the candidate's readiness for Senior Membership.

The Head of the Yellows then sends the raising packet to the Director of Membership, who examines the packet and draws her/his own conclusions about the candidate. If the Mistress of Accepted and Director of Membership also feel she is ready, the Mistress of Accepted would start a thread in the Hall with the subject “Nynaeve al'Meara for Aes Sedai.” Within the post would be her avatar (and also, at times, a link to a real-life picture), real first name, and link to her profile. Underneath this would be a statement which Nynaeve's Community Membership administrator would have sent the Director of Membership, explaining why she believed Nynaeve was ready to be raised to the rank of Senior Member. Underneath this might be personal recommendations from some of her Ajah mates, and below those would be the personal recommendations of the Mistress of Accepted and the Director of Membership.

Significantly important to the Hall's decision is whether the candidate has proven to represent him/herself in a conscious and mature manner, as a dedicated Servant of All. One who acts as a Senior Member should act (i.e. comporting oneself in a conscious and mature manner, being helpful to others, contributing to the Tower through word and/or deed) while still being a Junior Member will likely not have much opposition in the Hall when it comes time to be raised to the level of Aes Sedai/Gaidin.

The Hall expects this Community Member to have had an active, continuous presence in within the community. This activity can mean that the Community Member is always in our chat rooms, has a significant posting history across many forums, or attends as many official and local functions as possible.

An issue often raised in the Hall is that of post activity. While there is no specific number of posts which is ideal, an Accepted/Soldier should have a great deal of who they are represented in these posts.

The Hall very carefully votes upon each Community Member's raising, accepting those who are both friendly and dedicated. One who is being raised to Senior Member should not be expected to have socialized with every person in the Tower, by any means. However, it is unlikely that an Accepted/Soldier who is active enough to be raised would go unnoticed by the majority of the Hall members. If there are a number of members of the Hall who do not recognize the candidate due to the candidate’s limited activity in more than a few areas, this raises a red flag. In this case, the candidate might be denied raising, with the recommendation that he or she endeavor to broaden his or her interactions in more areas of the board.

Another characteristic which sets some apart from others is activeness in the Classrooms. While not required, participation in the Classrooms through either teaching a class or studying in another's class is a positive indication of that Community Member’s interest in The Wheel of Time series, from which our community was established. In addition, Classroom participation, especially that of teaching a class, often signifies to the Hall that the candidate is enthusiastic about the features available within the Tower and respectful of the structure set up for the various ranks.

Particularly positive recommendations from one's membershp administrator and fellow Ajah/Company mates, as well as that of the Director of Membership, is also taken into consideration. By the time one is up for raising to Senior Member, one should be appropriately comfortable within one's Ajah or Company; settled into one's niche, per se. Any adverse situations mentioned in the raising thread by anyone giving a recommendation will be carefully considered by the Hall.

Once a member is Aes Sedai/Gaidin, he or she is a 'Senior Member,' and enjoys much more freedom from the strictures placed upon Junior Members. The privilege of attaining this rank is for those who have clearly proven themselves to be committed to the Tower through their interactions within it, as well as by the level of contribution given to the Tower through participation in Tower endeavors within the forum and also (if applicable) at real life functions, and any projects/activities one might have worked on independantly or with other members in the effort to make the Tower a more dynamic environment.

If the applicant is turned down, his or her Community Membership administrator will discuss what factors contributed to the applicant being denied so that the applicant may improve his/her chances at being raised at a later date. If the candidate is approved, the Mistress of Accepted or Captain of Soldiers will send a PM to that member with a link to the raising test.

Before one is raised to this level, then, the Hall must be sure that the member is committed, trustworthy, understands how the Tower is run and gets along well with others. The Hall also evaluates where the candidate has been posting.

A novice or recruit who has mostly remained in the Hallways or Barracks during tenure in the Tower is less likely to be approved for raising than a member who has posted in both the Tower and also in the general forums (such as General, Technology & Media etc., in places where one may interact with Community Members of all groups and ranks). Likewise, a Novice or Recruit who has not posted in the Hallways/Barracks hardly at all, posting only in the general forums, is less likely to be approved for raising, as he or she has not yet interacted altogether much with the groups to which he or she would one day aspire. Interaction with all groups available is highly recommended, so as to wholly realize one’s prospects.

It is therefore recommended to take full advantage of the access to the Tower which one has as a Novice or Recruit, but to also keep in mind that overall, the decision is based upon the way which one relates to others throughout the forum and with all ranks of membership. The majority of Hall members search for evidence in one’s posting history that this Community Member is involved, dedicated, genuine, friendly and, above all, forging worthy relationships among one’s fellow Community Members. The Tower is a community based upon mutual respect and friendship, and these values would ideally be evident in one of a mind to be raised to the level of Accepted/Soldier.

Another characteristic which sets some apart from others is activeness in the Classrooms. While not required, participation in the Classrooms is a positive indication of that Community Member’s interest in The Wheel of Time series, from which our community was established. In addition, Classroom participation often signifies to the Hall that the candidate is enthusiastic about the features available within the Tower and respectful of the structure set up for the various ranks.

An issue often raised in the Hall is that of post activity. While there is no specific number of posts which is ideal, a Novice/Recruit should have a great deal of who they are represented in these posts.

The Hall very carefully votes upon each Community Member's raising, accepting those who are both friendly and dedicated. One may be friendly, but dedication is hard to discern from too few posts - or too many, if the post history consists of 'spam,' i.e. throw-away posts which show little to nothing of the candidate's character. Either raise a red flag, and could be grounds for denying the raising until the Community Member has contributed more posts which represent who he or she is as a person. A particularly positive recommendation from a mentor is also taken into consideration.

One situation which also raises a red flag for those considered for raising to the level of Accepted/Soldier is that of a Community Member recently returned from a leave of absence. All too often, a Novice or Recruit has gone on leave of absence for a month or longer, and then come back, posted quite a lot for a week or two, and then submitted him/herself for raising. The majority of the time, this causes Hall members to deny their application, with the recommendation that he or she mingle a while longer and show that they are indeed still dedicated over a longer period of time (a month or two, depending upon the situation).

Once a Community Member is Accepted/Soldier, he or she is indeed ‘sealed to the Tower’ and has greater forum access than novices and recruits. The privilege of attaining this rank, which is just one step below Senior Member, is for those who have clearly proven themselves to be constant and committed members.

If a Community Member’s application is turned down, the Mistress of Novices or Captain of the Guard will tell him/her so in private and discuss what factors might be considered before applying again after a time. If the candidate is approved, the Mistress of Novices or Captain of the Guard will send a PM to that Community Member, with a summoning to take the raising test with a link.

==Candidates for Senior Membership==

When the Hall is asked to consider a candidate for Senior Member, one may be certain that the Community Member has been, in the eyes of his or her Community Membership administrator and Ajah/Company, a faithful, respectable and contributing member of the community for a substantial amount of time. For one to be raised through the ranks from new citizen to Senior Member takes seven months at the very least, though that short a time period occurs very rarely. It is not unusual for a Junior Member to have been an enduring and steadfast contributor to the site for years at a time.

There are many reasons why one might remain a Junior Member for an extended period of time. Some of the more common reasons for this are indecisiveness about choosing one’s Ajah/Company, waiting for the minimum age requirement for Senior Membership (seventeen), lacking the maturity expected from a Senior Member (which frequently has little to do with the member’s age), not being active enough in a broad enough spectrum of forums (i.e. only interacting within the threads and forum intended for one’s Ajah/Company – or only very few besides these), and going on an extended leave of absence (a month or longer) and only just returning.

The Hall determines each candidate's merits for raising in the specialized private forum, “Hall of the Tower.” To give an example of the raising process: Nynaeve al'Meara has been an Accepted for over the minimum period, and her Head of Ajah has decided that she is ready to take the final steps of becoming a Senior Member. The Head of the Yellows posts a locked thread in the forum seen only by Yellow Aes Sedai, stating that she planning to put up Nynaeve for raising to Aes Sedai, and that she is compiling recommendations to send to the Hall. It should be noted that this is not a vote; a unanimous agreement by the Ajah/Company members is neither required nor needed to put someone up for Senior Member. This thread is created for the purpose of receiving recommendations from other Community Members of the Ajah/Company to put forth for Hall consideration, as well as to obtain any important and relevant information about the candidate which might have been previously overlooked, which might bring into question the candidate's readiness for Senior Membership.

The Head of the Yellows then sends the raising packet to the Director of Membership, who examines the packet and draws her/his own conclusions about the candidate. If the Mistress of Accepted and Director of Membership also feel she is ready, the Mistress of Accepted would start a thread in the Hall with the subject “Nynaeve al'Meara for Aes Sedai.” Within the post would be her avatar (and also, at times, a link to a real-life picture), real first name, and link to her profile. Underneath this would be a statement which Nynaeve's Community Membership administrator would have sent the Director of Membership, explaining why she believed Nynaeve was ready to be raised to the rank of Senior Member. Underneath this might be personal recommendations from some of her Ajah mates, and below those would be the personal recommendations of the Mistress of Accepted and the Director of Membership.

Significantly important to the Hall's decision is whether the candidate has proven to represent him/herself in a conscious and mature manner, as a dedicated Servant of All. One who acts as a Senior Member should act (i.e. comporting oneself in a conscious and mature manner, being helpful to others, contributing to the Tower through word and/or deed) while still being a Junior Member will likely not have much opposition in the Hall when it comes time to be raised to the level of Aes Sedai/Gaidin.

The Hall expects this Community Member to have had an active, continuous presence in within the community. This activity can mean that the Community Member is always in our chat rooms, has a significant posting history across many forums, or attends as many official and local functions as possible.

In this case, the candidate might be denied raising, with the recommendation that he or she endeavor to broaden his or her interactions in more areas of the board.

By the time one is up for raising to Senior Member, one should be appropriately comfortable within one's Ajah or Company; settled into one's niche, per se. Any adverse situations mentioned in the raising thread by anyone giving a recommendation will be carefully considered by the Hall.

Once a member is Aes Sedai/Gaidin, he or she is a 'Senior Member,' and enjoys much more freedom from the strictures placed upon Junior Members. The privilege of attaining this rank is for those who have clearly proven themselves to be committed to the Tower through their interactions within it, as well as by the level of contribution given to the Tower through participation in Tower endeavors within the forum and also (if applicable) at real life functions, and any projects/activities one might have worked on independantly or with other members in the effort to make the Tower a more dynamic environment.

If the applicant is turned down, his or her Community Membership administrator will discuss what factors contributed to the applicant being denied so that the applicant may improve his/her chances at being raised at a later date. If the candidate is approved, the Mistress of Accepted or Captain of Soldiers will send a PM to that member with a link to the raising test.

I'm a mom of 3 kids - two are autistic, and one is 16 going on 30! In terms of a job, I work for a dentist in town, as well as casually for Canada Post. I still don't know what I want to do when I grow up, but I sure hope I figure it out soon!

 As for tv shows, I have quite the list! In fact, I have shows that I must watch each day...Monday is "Castle", "House", and "Dancing with the Stars". Thursday is "Big Bang Theory", "Grey's Anatomy", "Private Practice", and "The Mentalist" (if I can fit it in). Friday is "Fringe". ;How long have you been a member of TV.net?
I first signed up in November, 2001, then was a member for four years, was away for one year and came back about a year later.

;How was your time as Citizen/Novice/Accepted?
The first time around, I was a novice for a week and Accepted for five. I don't remember much of it, actually, though I know I had fun. This second time around is fresh in mind, and it's been awesome! I have made some very good friends, and I've had a helluva time. =D

;When were you raised to Aes Sedai of the Green Ajah?
November 2nd, 2007. =D

;Why did you choose Green?
I've felt so comfortable with and welcomed by this Ajah ever since I returned to the community, which played a major part in me choosing Green this time around. Other factors played in too though, like... finding the perfect fit. N such. It's hard to explain. =)

;Are you like the Greens in the Books?
Not really, no.

;Do you like to party, love men and are you a sucker for fashion and make up?
I'm not very fond of partying, though once in a while is okay, men amuse me, I choose comfortable clothes rather than clothes that are "in", and I hardly ever wear make-up. =P

;To whom are you bonded, if you're bonded?
Janos Audron and Toral t'Simoua Delvar

;What things do you do for TV.net?
At the moment I'm taking a well-deserved break *cough* but I have served as Sitter, Tower Voice, Ajah Head, Mistress of Novices, Master of the Watch and Director of Moderators.

;How did you get to read the Series?
Well, when I was like 12-ish, I saw the first book at the store and really liked the cover art. =P A year later, I found the book at the local library, and decided to try it out. You can imagine the rest.

;Who is your mentee, if you have one?
Right now, my mentee is Mellyn al'Baya. Earlier, I have mentored Lyoness Sedai of the Blue Ajah and Eveanyn Sedai of the Red Ajah.

;Who is your favorite character of the Series? Favorite Nation?
Favorite character is Moiraine. At first, I only read the series for her character. My favorite nation... that's harder, I think they're all so weird!!

;Have you ever attended any Real Life Functions? Did you like them if you did, and why? (Why do you think people should come to any future functions?)
Yes I have, one official one and one unofficial one! I loved them, it was like meeting up with family you didn't know you had. Kind of. And I think people should go to future functions because if they don't, they'll miss out on something rather great!

;What kind of music do you like?
My favorite artists are Alanis Morissette and David Bowie. I tend to lean towards pop and rock, though I like some heavier stuff too. And rap. Like Eminem. OOoh, and I'm a sucker for musicals. =P

;What are your favorite movies?
I have so many of them... the LotR trilogy, Finding Nemo, Cruel intentions, Pan's Labyrinth, Kill Bill vol 1, Scooby Doo 1 and 2, the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy, Stardust, Taran and the Black Cauldron, Sleepy Hollow, Emperor's New Groove, Sin City, Evolution, Spirited away.... sooooooo many. I'm also a Buffy series addict and obsessed with the Legend of the Seeker series. =D

;What is the craziest/stupidest thing you've ever done?
Devoured over 1 liter of Baileys in one night at a Tower Party. =(

;What job do you have?
I'm a student.

Yes, a very strange cat named Nala.

;What languages do you speak?
Norwegian and English, and I understand languages like Danish, Swedish and French.

Firewoman, lawyer, vet, policewoman and doctor. All at the same time!

Why do I have to choose? I like both!! Though Cadsuane is a bit scary, yes she is!

Aiel! Probably because I know them better than I know the Atha'an Miere.

Winter!! Love snow and the lack of bugs! =D

Night. I'm a night owl, my head's clearer at night, and I get things done then.

Letsee... My name's Victoria and I'm 26 years old. I live in Bergen in Norway where I'm a student at the local university. My current goal there is a bachelor in information science.

I love stuff like painting, knitting, crocheting, drawing... and I also love to read. Among my favorite authors you'll find Anne Bishop, Stephen King and, of course, Robert Jordan.

I love love love to travel, though I've not really seen much of the world just yet. My favorite places that I've visited so far, are Lisbon in Portugal, Chicago in the US and London, England. I've had such a great time in those three cities! =D

;Why did you choose Gray?
I found I had the most similarities with the Gray sisters, such as my excessive procrastination. :p I felt more comfortable and a part of them than I did with any other Ajah.

;Are you like the Grays in the Books?
Actually, I really am. I tend to be the peacemaker within my family and friends. I have the ability to see both sides of the same argument and want only happiness and peace.

;Do you love politics and do you like to discuss a lot?
I wouldn't say I love politics, but I have a mild interest in them and definate views on the big issues. I tend to wait until the last minute to read up on political candidates before voting.

;How was your time as Citizen/Novice/Accepted?
Long, as I kept hearing from all those who joined at the same time as I did and rose to SM status while I was still novice. :p I only decided to move up in rank when I started feeling like I wanted more out of TV. As long as I was comfortable in my position, I didn't bother to get raised. It wasn't a race to me. :)

;How long have you been a member of TV.net?
I joined TV December of 2004, so that's almost three years.

;What things do you do for TV.net?
I'm currently planning an ''Angreal'' class with Lierra, and am planning on donating monthly soon.

;How did you get to read the Series?
I began reading in middle school. I had finished reading what the school library had of the Brian Jacques series Redwall and was looking for something new. I saw WoT books on the shelf and, though intimidated by the size of them, wanted a challenge, so I chose them. Also, we were having a sort of contest at the time where we would choose books, read them, and take a reading comprehension test afterward. If you passed the test, you were awarded a certain number of points that differed from book to book depending on reading level and length. The WoT books were, obviously, very high in points, and I wanted to win that contest. After that, I just got hooked. :p

;Who is your favorite character of the Series? Favorite Nation?
Favorite character is definitely Egwene. Favorite nation....probably the Aiel.

;Have you ever attended any Real Life Functions? Did you like them if you did, and why? (Why do you think people should come to any future functions?)
I've attended every TV official function since Fall Ball 2005. I love the RL functions because we get to socialize in person! Also, I've travelled more in the past two years than I have in my life because of RL functions, and I love that aspect of them.

;What kind of music do you like?
Oh lord. Too many to name. Top five bands/artists (which are difficult enough for me to choose) are:
1) Led Zeppelin
2) Tool
3) Radiohead
4) Kelly Joe Phelps (acoustic blues)
5) Shpongle (psychadelic techno)

;What are your favorite movies?
Great, another hard one!
1) The Hours
2) The Royal Tennenbaums
3) Robin Hood: Men in Tights
4) Amelie
5) Fly Away Home

;What is the craziest/stupidest thing you've ever done?
Probably driving home drunk during senior year of high school. Granted, I was driving on country roads, early in the morning (no other cars), going ten miles UNDER the speed limit, and was only three minutes (literally) from my house, but it was really really stupid of me! More recently, I booked my flight to this year's Fall Ball a day later than I should have, and just yesterday spent an extra $354 to correct my mistake. That was pretty damn stupid too...

;What job do you have?
I'm a 'Documentation Specialist,' which is a fancy name for a proofreader/copyeditor, really.

;Do you have a pet?
We live with two animals, but they aren't technically 'ours.' There's Sophie, a 2.5 year-old black lab mix who loves to eat apples and has boundless energy, and Tasha, a very old multi-colored cat who loves getting her chin and ears scratched. :p

;What languages do you speak?
Only English, sadly. :\

;What profession did you want to have when you were a kid?
I think I wanted to be a veterinarian for a while...then I wanted to be a singer.

;Lanfear or Moghedien?
Moghedien. :p

Shara!

;Candles or lamps?
Lamps. Much easier to read and write by.

At this point in my life, totally lounging at home. Though the occasional party is quite welcome. :p

I'm 22, recently married (9/22/07), and am living in Maryland. I am a huge snob when it comes to: beer, coffee, driving, music, movies, and grammer/writing. I have eclectic taste in music and will always choose a comedy over a drama when it comes to movies.

;Why did you choose Gray?
Because I am Gray. I went there and I belonged.

;Are you like the Grays in the Books?
Well, I work in law, and studied to be a psychologist... those are fairly Gray things to do. Seriously, though, conflict sickens me. I'm the person who comes in and settles everyone down and gets things running again. So I'm pretty Gray.

;Do you love politics and do you like to discuss a lot?
I am very passionate about certain areas of politics, but I am very cognizant of the fact that I can't change every little thing. I am most interested in animal rights, women's reproductive rights, the environment, and literacy.

;How was your time as Citizen/Novice/Accepted?
Honestly, I don't remember much of Citizen other than feeling like I didn't fit in in the Tavern. Novice was fun, and Accepted was absolutely a blast.

;How long have you been a member of TV.net?
Hmm. Maybe a year and a half?

;What things do you do for TV.net?
I write for the TVT, am on the research team, Online Events team, and I constantly teach classes. I'm also in charge of the Gray Ajah Newsletter. And I'm always looking for ways to help out.

;How did you get to read the Series?
I bought a big lot of 80 sff books from eBay, and The Eye Of The World was in the box. I picked it up, and before I was a third of the way though I had gone on Amazon and ordered the rest of the series. :P

;Who is your mentee, if you have one?

;Who is your favorite character of the Series? Favorite Nation?
I love Nynaeve in the middle books, and Egwene at the last. And I am fascinated by the Aiel.

;Have you ever attended any Real Life Functions? Did you like them if you did, and why? (Why do you think people should come to any future functions?)
I've met quite a few people locally, and then I went to last Anni. It was amazing. Absolutely amazing. I'm already saving up for next year.

Downtempo for sure... most musical theatre, gangsta rap, Romantic and 20th-century classical, indie rock, metal, vocal jazz, and I love me some 90s alternative.

Well, I work in law, and studied to be a psychologist... those are fairly Gray things to do. Seriously, though, conflict sickens me. I'm the person who comes in and settles everyone down and gets things running again. So I'm pretty Gray.

I am very passionate about certain areas of politics, but I am very cognizant of the fact that I can't change every little thing. I am most interested in animal rights, women's reproductive rights, the environment, and literacy.

Honestly, I don't remember much of Citizen other than feeling like I didn't fit in in the Tavern. Novice was fun, and Accepted was absolutely a blast.

I bought a big lot of 80 sff books from eBay, and The Eye Of The World was in the box. I picked it up, and before I was a third of the way though I had gone on Amazon and ordered the rest of the series. :P

I love Nynaeve in the middle books, and Egwene at the last. And I am fascinated by the Aiel.

With most other Ajahs, there is a dominant vibe/culture that I could easily fall in with, were I so inclined, but none of them fully defined me as a person. I got off to a rocky start with the Wheel of Time. I stumbled across a paperback copy of ''The Shadow Rising'' when I was in junior high, and I couldn't stand it. So many characters, and I had no clue what any of them were doing. I didn't have access to the first three, so after finishing that one I gave up on it. Sometime in 1995 (because that's when ''Lord of Chaos'' was published, and I remember seeing it on the shelf in hardback at a store) a librarian friend of mine pushed the series on me when I was whining about having nothing to read. This was a different library, and they had books 1-5. I read the first and was immediately hooked. I read those 5, got my greedy paws on the 6th, and have read them all as they've come out ever since.
