General

Anselan is a historical figure from the time of the Trolloc Wars. He was bonded to an Aes Sedai named Barashelle. A lot of stories tell about their love. Birgitte remembers seeing him and says he was leather-faced and very stubborn (TFoH, Ch. 36).

The Amyrlin chose him to be Barashelle's Warder as a kind of punishment. Birgitte sees them a few years after that and could not decide who was in charge (TFoH, Ch. 36).

Elayne remembers some stories about them, none of which says they were Warder and Aes Sedai. She had only heard of Barashelle having to do some long and arduous service to gain Anselan's love (TFoH, Ch. 36).

Egwene reads their love story in the book The Flame, the Blade and the Heart, which Aviendha lent her (TFoH, Ch. 24).

Quotes

"Barashelle and Anselan? It could not be the same pair, that story said nothing about Barashelle being Aes Sedai. But she had read two versions and heard Thom tell another, and all had Barashelle doing some long, arduous service to earn Anselan's love. Two thousand years could change a great deal in a story." (Elayne; The Fires of Heaven, Chapter 36)
