General

During the 2011 Admin Meeting, the decision was made to form a new department called the Department of Community Outreach. It would take on the duties of the former Department of Philanthropy as well as certain duties from the former Department of Community Development. The Online Events Team was refashioned as the Outreach Activities Team to better reflect its new mission and duties. This history will first start in 2009 with the creation of the Department of Philanthropy.

2009

During the 2009 Admin Meeting, the Department of Philanthropy was created and the first director, Yelenia Hylraren, was chosen. Later that same year, Kariada Kunai took over as director. The department was largely inspired by the huge success the community had in a fundraiser for Heifer International held in conjunction with Brandon Sanderson and the Robert Jordan Estate. During this 2009 fundraiser, the community raised $44,619.94 for this charity. After this incredible success, TarValon.Net decided to form the Department of Philanthropy to further our long-standing mission to philanthropy in the real world.

Wheel of Time Fundraiser

During this year, TarValon.Net co-hosted a fundraiser with Brandon Sanderson and the Robert Jordan Estate. It was promoted in the greater Wheel of Time community, and the proceeds went to Heifer International. The fundraiser ended April 10, 2009 and a grand total of $44,619.94 was raised for the charity. During the fundraiser there was a silent auction as well as a general donation drive. The highest bidder in the silent auction was memorialized in A Memory of Light, with both a name and character description based on the winning donor. The general fundraiser also held a drawing for named characters in A Memory of Light. In addition, The Wheel of Time community voted on a group of characters to represent themselves in the Final Battle, choosing between Aiel under Rand's Banner, Cha'Faile/Two Rivers Men fighting for Perrin, Aes Sedai/Warders from the White Tower, and Guardsmen/Guardswomen fighting for Andor. Winners for the prizes were announced at JordanCon 2017. The winners of the general fundraiser were Tina Wagner and Anthony Aziz. The winner of the silent auction was Brian Neff, with a bid of $15,200. All members will be represented in the Last Battle as Aiel under Rand's Banner, which had 1,889 votes. A total of 4,345 votes were recorded for this poll.

This wildly successful fundraising drive inspired the creation of the Department of Philanthropy at TarValon.Net, and its continued dedication toward philanthropy as true Servants of All.

Feast of Lights Fundraiser

The charity for this fundraiser was Doctors Without Borders (Médecins Sans Frontières) and $2,465.00 was raised for this cause.
