General

Fedwin Morr was an Asha'man loyal to Rand. It is never mentioned where he came from, but he was probably from Andor, because he was once of the first to be tested for the ability to channel. He was a good deal huskier than Eben Hopwil, but certainly no older than fifteen or sixteen, according to Rand (LoC, Ch. 3).

He was one of the four men remaining from the very first testing. He would soon accompany Taim on his recruiting trips (LoC, Ch. 11). When we see him next at Dumai's Wells he had already risen to the rank of a Dedicated with the sword pin decorating his collar (ACoS, Ch. 2). Sometime after conquering Illian, Rand had promoted him to full Asha'man, because he already wore the Dragon pin before fighting against the Seanchan (TPoD, Ch. 14).

It is often described that even though he was still young, he had seen more horror than most men three times his age and was no longer "dewy-eyed" (TPoD, Ch. 27). Rand described the look in Morr's eyes as a hunting cat's that knew itself hunted in turn (TPoD, Ch. 24). Although Rand promised him he would be with him at Tarmon Gai'don, Morr would go mad eventually. His mind would be that of a small child and he could not be trusted with saidin any more, so Rand poisoned him (TPoD, Ch. 29).

Timeline

First Appearances

  • He came according to the amnesty Rand announced, hoping to learn from him. Any man being able to or wanting to learn to channel is under Rand's protection (TFoH, Ch. 56; LoC, Ch. 3).
  • He was replacing old thatch on the roofs of the farm when Rand took Taim to test the men there. He pushed eagerly to the front when Rand introduced Taim to them and told him to pick one to test (LoC, Ch. 3).
  • When Rand visited what is to become the Black Tower, Taim was training Damer Flinn, Jur Grady, Eben Hopwil and Morr among others. They were the only ones remaining from the first testing. Taim said he would take Grady, Hopwil or Morr with him when he went recruiting (LoC, Ch. 11).
  • He was among the crowd, when Rand made his speech naming them Asha'man and gave the sword and dragon pins to Taim (LoC, Ch. 42).

Dumai's Wells and Conquering Illian

  • He was among the Asha'man to rescue Rand at Dumai's Wells. He was one of the few Rand could attach a name to the face (LoC, Ch. 55).
  • He accompanied Rand into the Sun Palace and was behind him on the ramp to the throne room, when Rand was facing Colavaere (ACoS, Ch. 4).
  • Rand took him along to Caemlyn, even though Rand soon started thinking he should simply have sent Morr with a letter. They disguised as prisoners and the Maidens escorted them to where Bael and Bashere were. Rand left Morr there in case messages needed to be sent to him in Cairhien (ACoS, Ch. 7).
  • He came to visit Adley and Hopwil, who were on their way to Illian with Rand's army, every night, as he was ordered to; most likely exchanging word from Bashere. Flinn, Narishma and Dashiva knew nothing of this. One of his other tasks was to make sure no one of the Black Tower tried to spy with the Power in the Saldaean camp near Caemlyn (ACoS, Ch. 41).
  • Rand entered the Saldaean camp and told Bashere they would move when Morr arrived. Once he was present, he looked eager to conquer Illian alongside the other Asha'man and the army. When they were done, they waited in the throne room of the King's Palace for Rand to return from chasing Sammael (ACoS, Ch. 41).

Fighting the Seanchan

  • Rand sent him to scout around Ebou Dar and learn whatever he could about the Seanchan (TPoD, Ch. 13).
  • He returned to Rand with word of the Seanchan preparing to move from Ebou Dar soon and come against Illian. He reported they put soldiers along the Venir Mountains all the way to Arran Head. When Rand praised him, Morr mentioned there had been some talk about an "Aes Sedai weapon" (the Bowl of the Winds and following unweaving of a gateway). He investigated the ground where it was used and felt saidin being worst there; he said he could feel it in the air as if it were alive. Morr insists upon not being mad, and Rand assures him he will live until the Last Battle (TPoD, Ch. 14).
  • After Traveling to Illian with Rand and the others, he was sent off to the City and he returned with a thousand men of the Legion of the Dragon the next day. He was among the Asha'man to search across the Plains of Maredo to gather the rest of Rand's forces, but it took days for the first to come back (TPoD, Ch. 21).
  • He helped Flinn Heal the wounded after the skirmishes with the Seanchan. Later, when Rand was down, Bashere shouted for him to come and Heal him.
  • He and the other Asha'man held gateways for Rand's army to prepare another battle against the Seanchan on the other side. He fought alongside the Companions against the Seanchan in the woods (TPoD, Ch. 24).

Madness

  • Dashiva, Flinn, Hopwil and Morr accompanied Rand when he went to meet Cadsuane. They were instructed to use the Power to overawe the Green sister, but Rand quickly noticed this did not work and sent them outside (TPoD, Ch. 27).
  • Morr kept unwanted visitors out of Rand's apartments, but when Sorilea entered, she did not give him much chance to see if she was allowed in. When the Aes Sedai with the Wise One promised to serve Rand and Elza kissed the floor in front of Rand's feet, he started gaping until he hastily returned to studying one of his coat buttons, giggling nervously. Morr fell in behind Rand, when he decided to go to Cadsuane, just before the attack on his apartments. Rand instructed Morr to guard Min with his life and take her down to the servant's quarters. Down there he pulled stones out of the walls with the Power to build "a big tower to keep Min safe in." She talked him into playing with wooden blocks instead, until Rand came and prepared a cup of wine for him to drink. After he took the cup, he died with a smile on his lips (TPoD, Ch. 29).

Strengths and Talents

He was stronger than Adley and Hopwil, strong enough to make a gateway of useful size (ACoS, Ch. 7).

He did not really believe he could affect anything at a distance with the Power, resulting in his ability beginning to fade at fifty paces and not being able to weave threads at all at a hundred. Taim calls this a bar (ACoS, Ch. 7).

He seemed to have had some ability in Healing, though he was not as deft with the flows as Flinn. He could only make the simple weave (not Flinn's way of Healing) work by resting two fingers on the wounded person's chest and catching his tongue between his teeth (TPoD, Ch. 23).

Relationships

His loyalty was to Rand from the beginning (LoC, Ch. 3). Rand trusted him, otherwise he would not have left him with Bashere to carry messages (ACoS, Ch. 7; Ch. 41). Morr himself later ensures Rand that he could trust him with his life, which he did by leaving Min to be guarded by the young Asha'man (TPoD, Ch. 29). When Rand noted "nothing much frightened them anymore" (meaning Adley, Hopwil and Morr), he thought to himself they need to relearn fear (ACoS, Ch. 7). He also insisted upon recognizing Morr as a human being, when the young one went mad and he had to poison him (TPoD, Ch. 29).

The first time, he, Jonan and Eben saw Maidens of the Spear they could not decide whether to goggle at "these exotic creatures they had only read about" or to run before "the murderous Aiel" killed them. Later, they were not afraid of them anymore and even made jokes to counter theirs (ACoS, Ch. 7).

Upon seeing him for the first time, Deira Bashere studied Morr "as she might have a dead rat some overeager dog had dropped on her rug" (ACoS, Ch. 7).

Torval was contemptuous of Morr and mocked him when he reported what he had learned about the Seanchan. Morr did not let that unsettle him and stayed calm and level toward the older Asha'man. Torval seemed to be affronted when it turned out he had been wrong on a matter when Morr was right. This certainly spurned his hatred (TPoD, Ch. 14).

Gregorin Panar den Lushenos was uncomfortable around Morr, which amused the young Asha'man. Gregorin even flinched when Morr grinned at him toothily (TPoD, Ch. 23).

Cairhienin nobles avoided him and the others, because they could channel (TPoD, Ch. 27).

He was grim and stone-faced the first time he met Cadsuane, as far as we can tell (his featured might also have been affected by holding saidin). She, however, was not at all impressed by any man in a black coat and asked whether one of them would start to juggle or eat fire, as she had always loved gleemen's performances. Although he was outraged by that comment, he was eager to be out of her way (TPoD, Ch. 27).

Taim seemed to have taken Rand's instructions to make weapons out of the men who had chosen to follow him to heart. He did not acknowledge any of them as a living and feeling being, but treated them as the things they were supposed to be. After Morr's death, Taim referred to him as "this one", seemingly unconcerned of yet another madman put to sleep (TPoD, Ch. 29).

Min talked to Morr as if to someone her age, although she could not overcome thinking he was still a boy, no matter how much fighting he had seen. She thought the sword at his hip looked especially out of place. When Rand ordered him to guard Min with his life, Morr told her confidently not to worry, because he would take care of her. In the end, she was the one to take care of him, and she was horrified when she realized his mind was that of a little child. It made her sad that Morr went mad; according to her it was not fair that this should happen to a boy (TPoD, Ch. 29).

Miscellaneous

  • Rand would have sent him home, because of his age, if the White Tower did not take novices sometimes even younger than Morr (LoC, Ch. 3).
  • He was proud of everything that marked him an Asha'man and he did not like hiding what he was, even when necessary (ACoS, Ch. 7).
  • When reporting about the strangeness of saidin around Ebou Dar, Morr affirmed he was not mad. After having read Taim's note, which stated one in fifty recruits at the Black Tower went mad already and he had to put them to eternal sleep with poisoned wine, Rand wondered whether Morr knew about the drink and whether he would be next to go mad. A foreboding thought (TPoD, Ch. 14).
  • When Rand silently mentioned cleansing saidin, his face shone with sudden hope (TPoD, Ch. 14).
  • He was surprised when Rand thanked him for Healing him (TPoD, Ch. 23).
  • When the other Asha'man mentioned the strange feel to saidin in the valley less than hundred miles to Ebou Dar, Morr added his discoveries in the city and for a hundred miles around (TPoD, Ch. 23). Having to fight in this area clearly made him uneasy (TPoD, Ch. 24).
  • On his last morning he kept darting uneasy glances at Rand and was constantly twisting his coat buttons. It can be assumed that he noticed some signs of madness and was afraid Rand might find out (TPoD, Ch. 29).

Quotes

"Into the painfully stretching silence burst a husky, windblown young man in black, with the Sword and Dragon on his collar. Of an age with Hopwill, still not old enough to marry most places, Fedwin Morr wore intensity more closely than his shirt; he moved on his toes, and his eyes had the look of a hunting cat that knew itself hunted in turn. He had been different, once, and not so long ago." (Rand on Morr; The Path of Daggers, Chapter 14)

"Morr! Burn your Asha’man hide! Here, now!” (Bashere to Morr when Rand is wounded; The Path of Daggers, Chapter 23)

"And I'll take care of Fedwin. Fedwin Morr, Taim; not 'this one.'" (Rand; The Path of Daggers, Chapter 29)
