Indirian

General

Indirian is an Aielman, adn the chief of the Codarra clan (TFoH, Ch. 2). He has one wife (ACoS, Ch. 18).

Egwene describes Indirian and Mandelain as tall, massive, graying men with hard, sober faces (LoC, Ch. 24). Indirian has heavy white eyebrows and a long nose; although he is of only average height for an Aielman, shorter than Rand by half a hand, everything about him seems long. Rand thinks to himself that the heat of the Waste appears to have melted away every spare ounce of flesh and more; his cheekbones stand out sharp and his eyes are emeralds set in caves. His voice is deep and rich (ACoS, Ch. 18).

Timeline

• Bruan tells Rand that the Codarra and Daryne Aiel will come to him eventually; they have lost more than any other clans to the Bleakness, and for the moment, Mandelain and Indirian are concerned with holding their clans together. Both of them will want to see the Dragons on Rand's arms for themselves, but they will come to him (TFoH, Ch. 2).

• Indirian and the other clan chiefs (Janwin, Mandelain and Timolan) still have not decided whether or not to join Rand. While planning the battle against the Shaido, Mat makes a comment that this battle would be easy enough for a child to handle, except for Indirian and the others not knowing their own minds. If they decide to go over to Couladin, they will have to toss the dice and hope (TFoH, Ch. 42).

• The Miagoma, Shiande, Daryne and Codarra clans are camped within sight of one another, a few miles to the east of Rand. Rand thinks to himself that there is now no doubt that they will come to him eventually, but not until the Wise Ones have finished their talks (TFoH, Ch. 45).

• Indirian and the others have acknowledged Rand as the Car'a'carn (TFoH, Ch. 51).

• Once, while Egwene is visiting the sweat tent with some of the Wise Ones, Rhuarc, Indirian and Mandelain join them and Egwene quickly leaves (LoC, Ch. 24).

• After Rand's kidnapping by the White Tower Aes Sedai, the clan chiefs are divided about where Rand has gone. Indirian thinks that, if he has gone to the White Tower, it cannot be willingly, and he is ready to take his clan north to Tar Valon to fight the Aes Sedai. Timolan, on the other hand, thinks that Rand has betrayed the Aiel. Mandelain and Janwin listen to what both Indirian and Timolan have to say (ACoS, Ch. 3).

• Rand speaks with Indirian, Mandelain and Janwin about the Aes Sedai and the Shaido. He is trying to prove to the three clan chiefs that the Aes Sedai do not control him, and so has Merana serve them during the meeting. The talk turns to the Shaido; the three clan chiefs wish to join Timolan near Kinslayer's Dagger to take care of the rest of the Shaido (ACoS, Ch. 18).

Miscellaneous

When Rand returns from his capture by Galina and her cohorts, Feraighin makes a comment to him that "even Indirian remembers that you commanded no wetlanders killed except in self-defense" (ACoS, Ch. 3). This makes it seem as if he is usually somewhat hotheaded when it comes to fighting.

He does not like speaking of Aes Sedai (ACoS, Ch. 18)

Quotes

"I do not like speaking of Aes Sedai." His deep, rich voice was always a shock, coming from that gaunt face. "What is done, is done. Let the Wise Ones deal with them." (Indirian to Rand; A Crown of Swords, Chapter 18).

"Sarinde tells me almost all of the Wise Ones will run with the algai'd'siswai," Indirian said at last, reluctantly. Sarinde was the Wise One who had followed him from Red Springs, clan hold of the Codarra. Or perhaps "followed" was not the right word; Wise Ones seldom did. In any case, most of the Codarra Wise Ones, and the Shiande and the Daryne, would go north with the spears. "The Shaido Wise Ones will be... dealt with... by Wise Ones."
