Mistress Keene is the innkeeper of The Counsel's Head in Far Madding. She has a pointed chin and wears her white hair in a bun.
She has a suspicious and disapproving look, which makes Rand certain that she would have no customers at all if the accommodation and meals were not as enjoyable as they are. Her suspicions are mainly towards men; she even has a strap in each of her rooms. Women can use them to keep their husbands in line.
She gives Min a letter for Rand.
She thinks Rand is a pretty man and advises Min to keep an eye on her friends.
