General

Phaedrine is an Aes Sedai of the Brown Ajah who sides with the Salidar Aes Sedai when the White Tower splits (TFoH, Ch. 50).

She is small-boned, dark-haired, brown-eyed (KoD, Ch. 17) and as lean as a heron (CoT, Ch. 17). Beonin thinks that she frowns much too often, and that she might be pretty if she didn't (KoD, Ch. 17). Her clothing is often creased and stained, and Beonin refers to her as "unkempt" (KoD, Ch. 17).

Beonin thinks to herself that Phaedrine is always so immersed in whatever has caught her attention that she forgets how she should behave (KoD, Ch. 17).

Timeline

  • When Elayne and Nynaeve reach Salidar, they are taken to Phaedrine, who is the first person aside from the Warders and Min to take notice of them. They tell her the story that they have planned, and five minutes into it, she leaves, giving them strict orders not to move a foot or speak a word. She goes to tell Sheriam about them arriving (TFoH, Ch. 50).
  • Egwene watches as Phaedrine and Shemari arrive back from Traveling somewhere. They have their heads together in conversation and are just pinning on their cloaks. Egwene wonders where they were, and figures that they were probably visiting their eyes-and-ears, or that they went looking for a book in some library. However, she cannot help but think of a comment that Nisao made about sisters slipping away to Elaida (CoT, Ch. 17).
  • As Beonin is on her way to the Traveling Grounds to Travel to the White Tower, she is stopped by Ashmanaille and Phaedrine. They want to know if Beonin has any thoughts on the murders that have happened in the Rebel camp, since they cannot come up with any ideas. When Beonin mentions the fact that both Anaiya and Kairen were Blue, which connects them to Rand al'Thor through Moiraine, Phaedrine asks if Beonin thinks that the Dragon Reborn is the killer, and seems surprised at the idea. Beonin replies no, but that if you follow the connections, you will go from Rand al'Thor to the Asha'man. Phaedrine disagrees and thinks that the killer is a worker in the camps, a male wilder (KoD, Ch. 2).

Miscellaneous

  • Neither Phaedrine nor Shemari are strong enough to weave a gateway on their own. Linked, however, they can just manage one big enough to walk through (CoT, Ch. 17).
  • Phaedrine taught Egwene when she was a novice (CoT, Ch. 17).
  • Phaedrine and Ashmanaille are friends (KoD, Ch. 2).

Quotes

"The first person aside from the Warders and Min to pay any attention to them at all had been the lean Brown sister they were taken to, in what had once been the common room of this inn. She and Elayne had told the story they had agreed on to Phaedrine Sedai, or tried to. Five minutes into it, they were left standing, with strict orders not to move a foot or speak a word, even to each other. Ten more minutes, staring at one another in confusion, while all around them Accepted and white-clad novices, Warders and servants and soldiers bustled between tables where Aes Sedai pored over papers and briskly handed out orders, and then they had been hustled before Sheriam and the others so quickly Nynaeve did not think her shoes had touched the floor twice." (Nynaeve; The Fires of Heaven, Chapter 50).

"A faint silvery light flashed behind a tall canvas wall just ahead of her, surrounding one of the camp's two Traveling grounds, and a moment later two sisters emerged from behind one of the flaps. Neither Phaedrine nor Shemari was strong enough to weave a gateway by herself, but linked she thought they could just manage one big enough to walk through. Heads close together in deep conversation, strangely they were just pinning on their cloaks. Egwene kept her face averted anyway as she rode by. Both of the Browns had taught her as a novice, and Phaedrine still seemed surprised that Egwene was Amrylin. Lean as a heron, she was quite capable of wading out into the muck to ask whether Egwene needed assistance." (Crossroads of Twilight, Chapter 17).

"Where had they been, she wondered. Somewhere indoors, perhaps, or at least warmer than the camp. No one really kept track of the sisters' comings and goings, of course, not even the Ajahs. Custom ruled everyone, and custom strongly discouraged direct questions about what a sister was doing or where she was going. Most likely, Phaedrine and Shemari had been to hear from some of their eyes-and-ears face to face. Or maybe to look at a book in some library. They were Brown. But she could not help thinking of Nisao's comment about sisters slipping away to Elaida." (Egwene; Crossroads of Twilight, Chapter 17).

"He the killer might have only just learned how to kill Anaiya and Kairen. A male wilder, as it were. I've overheard workmen talking. As many admire the Asha'man as fear them. I've even heard some say they wish they had the nerve to go to the Black Tower themselves." (Phaedrine to Beonin on her ideas about the killer; Knife of Dreams, Chapter 2).
