Salya is a character from stories that are told by Gleemen, like Thom. Apparently, she walked among the stars, and her father Lenn flew to the moon in the belly of an eagle of fire (The Eye of the World, Chapter 4).
Thom says that the stories of Lenn and Salya are old, from the Age before the Age of Legends, or perhaps even older (The Eye of the World, Chapter 4).
According to the website "Seven Spokes", Robert Jordan has confirmed that Salya refers to Sally Ride, the Astronaut and teacher (http://www.sevenspokes.com/chronology/1st.html).
