Perrin and Faile are walking back from Dermid Ajala's smithy to the inn where they are staying with Moiraine, Lan and Loial. Once they have returned, Moiraine informs Perrin that Rand is in Tear, and Lan tells him about some of the effects that Rand's ta'veren nature has been having on people: more marriages, more murders, a child falling from a building unharmed, the First of Mayene giving in to the demands of the High Lords of Tear. They also talk about the dreams that people have been having, of Rand taking Callandor from the Stone of Tear. Moiraine explains this by saying that Be'lal has been having nightmares and does not shield his dreams. Moiraine also tells Perrin and Faile that she and Lan will be taking care of Be'lal that night, and that she is sending them and Loial to Tar Valon so that they are safe.

Everyone goes upstairs, with Faile running ahead to find Loial. Perrin hears something fall onto the floor in the Dining Room and rushes towards it to find Faile lying on the floor, unconscious. Seeing her, he calls her by the name "Faile" for the first time and starts to rush towards her, but is stopped by Moiraine. Perrin agonizes over Faile while Moiraine tries to find out what has happened to her. Perrin sees a carved hedgehog lying next to Faile, and Moiraine says that she felt a trigger of Spirit and that the hedgehog was obviously a trap meant for her. After learning from the innkeeper, Master Haret, that the hedgehog was left in the Dining Room by two women who wanted to "surprise her", Moiraine tells Perrin that Faile has been trapped in Tel'aran'rhiod.

Moiraine and Lan take off for the Stone of Tear, and Perrin decides that he must help Faile. Loial joins him, and agrees to watch over Perrin and Faile. Perrin jumps towards Faile. The trap springs again, drawing him into Tel'aran'rhiod, where he meets Hopper and sets off to free Faile.
