Work in progress.

General

Merits were introduced in 2010 and are intended as rewards for continued and dedicated service to TarValon.Net.

Merits currently fall under 9 categories and there are 38 different types available. 9 of them are non-eligible for Gold, and 9 are non-eligible for Silver. They are all listed on the Merit Badges page.

Awarding

Merits are awarded every three months, 4 times per year in total: in January, in April, in July, and in October. The one responsible for awarding merits is the Archivist. After the newly awarded merits are announced on the forums, the Library editing stage begins.

Editing Who's Who Pages

How merit badges appear on profile pages

One each individual Who's Who page, there is a heading called "Merits", which is of level three. All of the merit badges should be added under one of its subheadings - Silver or Gold.

The Library has templates for each of the existing merit badges, which can be found here: Category:Merit Badge Templates.

If a person has been awarded a silver merit

If a person has been awarded a silver merit, under the heading "Silver", put the template that would render the needed merit badge.

If a person has been awarded a gold merit

There are two scenarios if a person has been awarded a gold merit - either a silver merit has turned into gold, or the person has been awarded a gold merit that is non-eligible for silver.

In the first case, the silver merit template must be removed from under the heading "Silver", and its gold alternative's template should be put under the heading "Gold".

In the second case, the gold merit template should be put under the heading "Gold" without any change to the "Silver" heading.

In case where a person is awarded more than one merits, all templates should be put on their profile pages.

The order in which the merit badges should be lined from left to right, is according the categories they belong to, and which matches the Merit Badges page order. This means that the Membership category merits go to the most left, and the Raising the Next Generation category merits go to the most right. The different categories are color coded and that is how we distinguish them.

Editing Merit Pages

Each merit has its own page with a list of people that have been awarded it. Category:Merit Badges lists all of the pages for each of the existing merits.

After the Who's Who pages have been edited, each merit page should also be edited to include the names of the people that have received that merit during the quarter.

Silver only merits

The merit pages of silver only merits, non-eligible for gold, usually have only one heading named "Silvers Awarded". All people who have been awarded that merit, should be listed there in alphabetical order.

There are silver only merits that have several variations. Such as the Events Participation Merit. In this case, the person's name should be added under the merit type that the person was awarded.

In some cases, a person might get awarded multiple of one merit. Such as Members' Choice Award Merit. In this case, next to the name of the person, put down the amount of merits of this type that they have received.

Gold only merits

Just like with the silvers only merits, the gold only merits, non-eligible for silver, have only one heading named "Golds Awarded". All people who have been awarded that merit, should be listed there in alphabetical order.

In some cases, where more than one gold merit of a type has been awarded, a second heading might be included to say "Two Golds Awarded". See Amyrlin's Award Merit as an example.

Merits that have Silver and Gold variation

In cases where a merit has a silver and a gold variant, there are two headings - "Silvers Awarded" and "Golds Awarded". Some merits may also get awarded for a second or third time. In those cases, there are respective headings - "Two Golds Awarded" or "Three Golds Awarded". All people who have been awarded a Silver or Gold merit of this type, should be listed under the appropriate heading in alphabetical order.

If a person has been awarded a silver merit, their name goes in the list for the first time.

If a silver merit has turned into gold, the name of the person should be moved from under "Silvers Awarded" to under "Golds Awarded".

If a second or third gold has been awarded, the name of the person should be moved from under "One Gold" or under "Two Golds" and so on.

Editing Other Pages

There are several other pages that should be updated after each merit awarding.

Yearly Awards Page

The current year 20XX Awards page should be updated to include the merits awarded each quarter. This happens under the heading "Merits", which is of second level. Each quarter has its own heading, which is of level three.

Preferably, the names should be listed, separated by a comma and not as a list, so that the page does not get too long.

Total Merits Pages

There are two pages, where the department keeps track of how many merits have been awarded - one lists the merits awarded by member, and the other lists merits awarded by merit.

Total merits awarded (by member)

On the page Total Merits Awarded (by Member), there is a list of each person that has been awarded a merit. The list is not in alphabetical order.

Community Group Merits Pages

There are also pages listing all merits that have been awarded within a certain membership group. All the pages are in the Category:Community Group Merits. The templates for these pages are again in the Category:Merit Badge Templates under the letter X.
