Mathena is a historical figure who had possibly some sort of power when she lived.

She never liked men; once, she had executed when he saw her swimming naked by accident. But when Zheres stole her first kiss from her, she went crazy for him and he had to live on a mountain to escape her pursuit.

Nynaeve reminds Birgitte of Mathena.
