Plot

The issue opens with the traditional "In one age, called the Third Age by some, a wind rose in the Mountains of Mist. The wind was not the beginning, but it was a beginning. The wind blew east, out across the Sand Hills - once the shore of the great ocean before the breaking of the world. Down the wind flailed, into the tangled forest called the Westwood..." which is, of course, where the wind meets Rand and Tam on a path, carrying caskets of _____ from their farm to the town of Emond's Field.

Rand spots a mysterious black rider, but Tam says that he's just immagining things. They arrive in town, and are accosted by Wit Congar, complaining to Tam about how Nynaeve is too young to be the Wisdom of Emond's Field. Daise tells Wit to stay out of Women's Circle business. Tam excuses himself from their quarrel, saying that he has to deliver wine to the Winespring Inn.

At the Inn, Bran is listening to Cenn Buie complain about the absence of storks on the rooftops and how it is an ill omen when Tam arrives. Bran tells Tam that he was worried that he wouldn't be bringing his brandy to the inn this year for Bel Tine, and he and Tam have a conversation about the women's complaints to Bran, the mayor.

Mat grabs Rand's sleeve and pulls him down behind the wagon, telling him that he and Dav caught a badger and were going to let it loose on the Green and watch the girls run. Ran declines, citing that he has to unload the cloak. Mat then mentions strangers in the village, and Rand interrupts him, asking about the black rider that he saw on the road. Mat confesses to have seen him too, and they both admit that they were scared by him.

Tam spots them and suggests that Mat help Rand unload the cart, and afterwards he might be able to see the Gleeman that had just arrived the night before. Rand asks whether or not the Gleeman was wearing a black cloak, inquiring about the mysterious rider that both he and Mat had seen on the road, but Bran laughs and says that his cloak has "more colors on it than I can name!". Cenn grunts, saying the he thinks the Gleeman was a waste of money.

Mat and Rand begin to unload the cart, and Ewin joins them to help. He then mentions the strangers that Mat had mentioned earlier, and gives their names: Moiraine and Lan. He also mentions that the Wisdom, Nynaeve, dislikes them, because Moiraine referred to her as "Child".

As they exit the Inn, Rand says that he feels as if he's being watched. Mat says that he can feel it as well, and then he spots a raven looking at them. He picks up a rock to throw at the raven, but the raven dodges it. A lady in blue holding a staff then comes up to them and tells them that the raven was "a vile bird to be mistrusted in the best of times." The boys guess that this lady is Moiraine, and address her so, with the title of "Lady". She insists that they simply call her by her given name, and they do so.

Rand inquires as to why she is visiting Emond's Field, and Moiraine cryptically responds, "Why are any of us here, Rand al'Thor?" However, Rand persists, telling Moiraine that no one ever comes into the Two Rivers except merchants and peddlers. Moiraine replies that she is a student of history looking for stories of the past.

A man's voice, Lan, calls from the doorway to the inn, and Moiraine says that she must leave. Before leaving, she mentions to the boys that she may need their assistance in the future, and gives them each a silver penny, saying that there "is a bond between us now." She then leaves with Lan.

The issue ends with the three boys discussing the Gleeman, and Mat remarks that "This is going to be the best Bel Tine ever."
