As part of the community at TarValon.net, people go through several levels before being raised to the senior member status of Gaidin or Aes Sedai. For a couple of these, namely from recruit/novice to soldier/Accepted and from soldier/Accepted to Gaidin/Aes Sedai, there is a test the person must pass in order to progress. Occasionally, for several possible reasons, for example if the test is not available for some reason, the person involved is allowed to write an essay instead of taking the test.
