Balasun was one of the nations of the Free Era. Balasun was located in the southeastern part of the Westlands. To the west was the Aryth Ocean, with Elan Dapor to the north, Dhowlan to the east, and Kharendor to the southeast. Eventually, this area of land became what is now Tarabon and the Shadow Coast. The city of Tanchico was located in Balasun, though how much of the city survived the War of the Hundred Years is not clear.

Guaire Amalasan had taken Balasun sometime around FY 940, less than a year and a half after proclaiming himself the Dragon Reborn in Darmovan.

By FY 963, Hawkwing had conquered Balasun.

The nation of Tarabon modelled its system of government on that used in Balasun (The Wheel of Time Roleplaying Game).
