Tower Sworn Interview

October 20, 2023

Why did you choose Brown?

Because it’s got a good balance of scatterbrained and fierce; because people are interested in a ton of different stuff, which makes them interesting to talk to; because we are pro-science; because here I don’t have to pretend I’m nicer than I am, which inspires me to be nice.

Are you like the Browns in the books? Do you love books and have a tendency to daydream?

Yes & yes & yes. I’m so stereotypical it hurts.

Do you have a favorite Brown Ajah character from the novels?

I’m tempted to say Saerin just to be different, and also, that woman is badass. But come on, we all know it has to be Verin.

Who is your favorite protagonist? Antagonist?

Protagonists – Siuan and Verin, probably. Egwene, Elaine. Birgitte. Nynaeve. Antagonists – Asmodean, because he joined the bad guys so he could basically have the eternity to pursue his hobbies, and I can relate.

How long have you been a fan of the Wheel of Time series?

Since 2002.

How did you first get into the series?

I was on another forum back then, Khazaddum. A lot of people there loved WoT. I was living in Norway at the time, so I bought the first two books in Norwegian. Fun fact: On the back cover of The Eye of the World, the first sentence of the summary is a major spoiler for the end of the book.

Favorite book and scene?

The Shadow Rising used to be my favorite book. I’m not sure about the scene any more. My last reread was 10+ years ago, so I’m probably misremembering everything.

If you were set down in Randland, who/what would you see yourself as? An Aes Sedai? Innkeeper? Seanchan Captain?

A Brown Aes Sedai or nothing.

How did you find TarValon.Net and what convinced you to stay and become Tower Sworn?

I was lonely, in a foreign country, and I was living on the internet. I started reading the books and I desperately wanted to be an Aes Sedai. I stayed because I fell in love with the community, and I keep coming back because I love Browns.

How was your time as Citizen/Novice/Accepted?

Long, because I don’t like change, lol. I really leaned into novicehood and liked it so much that I stayed one for 10+ years, I think, on and off.

If you have attended any Real Life Functions (Official or Unofficial), do you recommend that people come to any future functions? Why or why not?

Yes, they are lovely, for obvious reasons.

What sort of job do you do in "real life"?

I'm a literary translator.

What profession did you want to have when you were a kid?

A polar explorer or a ranger of the LotR variety. And writer.

What languages do you speak?

This is a historical question; I tend to forget languages, unfortunately. I’m a native Serbian speaker, I translate from English and I write fiction in English when I manage to get my crippling anxiety under control. I majored in Norwegian 20 years ago, and I can still listen to audiobooks or read, but the spoken language eludes me. I used to be able to read fluently in Swedish and Danish, but i don’t know if I can do that any more. I’m trying to learn Dutch right now. I can figure out written German if I have to.

Aside from The Wheel of Time, what are a few of your favorite books/series?

Night Watch by Terry Pratchett (and all of Discworld, basically); Chronicles of Amber by Roger Zelazny; all of Robin Hobb whenever she writes about Fitz&Fool; Barrayar and The Vor Game by Lois McMaster Bujold (and the whole Vorkosign Saga, honestly); main works by Tolkien; Swordspoint by Ellen Kushner; the Hurog duology by Patricia Briggs; the Mercy Falls series by Maggie Stiefvater; Among Others by Jo Walton. I cannot stop, this question is killing me. A Deadly Education by Naomi Novik. I will arbitrarily stop. I now want to go reread all of this.

What are some of your favorite movies/television shows?

Iron Man 1&3, Midnight Run, Avengers, Veronica Mars, Gilmore Girls, Hawkeye, Star Wars (TOT), Ladyhawke, Stranger Things.

What kind of music do you enjoy listening to?

punk, Celtic punk, folk punk, Bach’s Art of Fugue, soft folky indie pop, some Mozart

Do you have any hobbies?

Reading, painting, drawing, writing, cooking, crocheting, gardening and a ton of other stuff that come and go, and I can’t fit everything in *cries inconsolably*

Do you have a pet?

I have a young dog named Daisy now. I’ve had dogs ever since I was 16.

Tea or coffee?

COFFEE

Verin or Adeleas?

Verin

Board games or computer games?

I’d say both, but computer games make my joints hurt a lot, so I rarely play any more.

Autumn or literally any other time of the year?

GUESS

Halloween or literally any other holiday?

See above.

What is the craziest/stupidest thing you've ever done?

Grew up.

A short bio about yourself
