Joana was a name that Birgitte Silverbow was known by in one of her past lives. Birgitte tells Elayne that she does not know if she can live up to being "Birgitte", a woman of legend, in the real world; in all of her other lives, she just did what she had to do, and it was enough for Joana, or Maerion, or any other woman (LoC, Ch. 40).
