Luan Norwelyn

General

Luan Norwelyn is the High Seat of House Norwelyn, which a strong House in Andor (TFoH, Ch. 19; LoC, Ch. 16). He is as powerful as Arathelle and Dyelin (LoC, Ch. 28).

He has graying hair and a hard face (LoC, Ch. 16).

Timeline

• On orders from Gaebril/Rahvin, Morgase exiles Luan and several other Andoran nobles who were loyal to her (TFoH, Ch. 19).

• Davram Bashere announces Abelle, Dyelin, Ellorien and Luan into Rand's presence. It is five days after Rand first issued an invitation to them. They speak of who is to rule on the Lion Throne (LoC, Ch. 16).

• Rand is meeting with Aemlyn, Arathelle, Dyelin, Ellorien, Luan and Pelivar, telling them that Elayne is on her way to Caemlyn, when Min arrives at the Palace. He dismisses them (LoC, Ch. 41).

• Rafela Cindal meets with Luan to speak of Rand. She asks Luan if Andor will not be better off without Rand (LoC, Ch. 43).

• Luan is still in Caemlyn. He, Dyelin and Pelivar arrest Naean and Elenia for proclaiming for the Lion Throne, and name Dyelin regent in Elayne's absence (ACoS, Ch. 7).

• There are many rumors of where Luan might be, but no one knows exactly where (CoT, Ch. 14).

Relationships

Luan supported Morgase during the Succession. Later, on orders from Gaebril/Rahvin, she has him exiled and thus he no longer wants a Trakand on the Lion Throne (TFoH, Ch. 19; LoC, Ch. 16).

Luan supports Dyelin Taravin for the throne of Andor, and says that he will ride beside Dyelin whether she chooses to ride for or against Rand (LoC, Ch. 16).

Abelle and Ellorien also support Dyelin. They, along with Abelle, appear together to be introduced to Rand, and their names appear together more than once. Dyelin thinks that they will bring their houses to Elayne (LoC, Ch. 16; WH, Prologue; CoT, Ch. 15).

Elenia hopes that Luan might support her for the throne (CoT, Ch. 15).

Miscellaneous

• Morgase learns that Luan is among the nobles who have not knelt to Rand (LoC, Ch. 9).

• When he realizes that Rand has used saidin to chill the wine that he, Abelle, Dyelin and Ellorien are drinking, he empties his winecup deliberately and has it refilled by gai'shain (LoC, Ch. 16).

• Luan doesn't have any daughters, and none of his granddaughters are old enough to put in a claim for the throne (TPoD, Ch. 28).

• Dyelin thinks that Ellorien and Luan are still behind Elayne, but they might go over to Aemlyn, Arathelle and Pelivar, who support Dyelin for the throne (TPoD, Ch. 28).

• Elayne thinks to herself that she cannot approach Roedran, the king of Murandy, because if she doesn't win the throne Roedran might face repercussions and lose parts of Murandy; already, Lord Luan and the others have seized territory. This suggests that Luan was at the meeting between the Andoran and Murandian nobles and the Salidar Aes Sedai, but his name is not mentioned (WH, Ch. 9).

• Elayne hopes that having the Borderland armies moving through Andor will force Aemlyn, Luan and Pelivar to support her for the throne (WH, Ch. 27).

• A hundred of Luan's men try to reach Caemlyn during the night, but three times Nasin Caeren's men catch them. Mellar comes to their rescue, and gets them safely into the city. Elayne is not pleased, because Luan has not declared for her yet. Mellar says that Luan is as good as in her camp, but Elayne interrupts, saying that until he is in her camp, now she has a good many men that need to be watched (CoT, Ch. 11).

• Dyelin tells Elayne that if Aemlyn, Arathelle and Pelivar head towards Caemlyn after leaving Murandy, then they are hoping that Abelle, Luan and/or Ellorien will join them in supporting Dyelin (CoT, Ch. 14).

Quotes

"Excellent wine." Staring into his goblet, Luan hesitated before adding, "My Lord Dragon." It might have been pulled out of him with a rope. (Luan to Rand; Lord of Chaos, Chapter 16).

"Dyelin," Luan said curtly. She shook her head as if she had heard this before, but he went on. "She has the best claim. I speak for Dyelin." (Luan to Rand; Lord of Chaos, Chapter 16).

Luan patted the Tairen stallion's gray neck, looking both ways in case one of the grooms came into the stables, and barely dodged a bite from wicked teeth. Rafela's Warder would give warning, but Luan was not sure he trusted anyone of late. Especially not with a visit of this sort. "I am not sure I understand," he said curtly. (Luan to Rafela; Lord of Chaos, Chapter 43).

"Unity is better than division," Rafela said, "peace better than war, patience better than death." Luan's head jerked at the odd end to the platitudes, and the round-faced Aes Sedai smiled. "Will Andor not be better off if Rand al'Thor leaves the land in peace and unity, Lord Luan?" (Rafela to Luan; Lord of Chaos, Chapter 43).

"Rumor has Lord Luan a dozen places, east and west." Frowning at the much-creased map as though Luan's position should have been marked on it, Birgitte muttered a curse, much viler than called for, now that Reene Harfor was absent. "Always the next village over, or the one beyond that." (Birgitte to Elayne; Crossroads of Twilight, Chapter 14).
