At the beginning of chapter 20 of "The Fires of Heaven", Rand leads his group into the Jangai Pass toward the town of Taien, ignoring Moiraine who tries to lecture him. As they approach Taien, they can see that dead bodies are hanging outside the walls. Three survivors walk up to Rand and tell him that this was the work of the Shaido who passed through six days ago. They also have a message from Couladin saying that he will do worse to Rand than the people on the walls.
