The Fires of Heaven: Chapter 20

At the beginning of chapter 20 of "The Fires of Heaven", Rand leads his group into the Jangai Pass toward the town of Taien, ignoring Moiraine who tries to lecture him. As they approach Taien, they can see that dead bodies are hanging outside the walls. Three survivors walk up to Rand and tell him that this was the work of the Shaido who passed through six days ago. They also have a message from Couladin saying that he will do worse to Rand than the people on the walls.

After hearing that there are more than hundred survivors, Rand tells the Aiel to see that they are fed and well treated. He wants to take them along to the other side of the Spine of the World.
