The Path of Daggers: Chapter 1
Chapter 1: To Keep the Bargain
Setting: the Tarasin Palace in Ebou Dar
Point of view: Aviendha
Aviendha, Nynaeve, Lan, Elayne and Brigitte hurry through the Tarasin Palace, knowing there is a storm about to descend on the city. Olver still hasn't been found, and Mat is out in the city trying to find him. Aviendha bans this thought from her mind though; he's an oathbreaker and she has other matters to think about. The newly wed Nynaeve and Lan are still arguing about who is protecting who, something Elayne and Brigitte don't seem to agree about either.
Still arguing, the company runs into Teslyn Baradon, one of Elaida's ambassadors to Ebou Dar. After exchanging a few niceties ,the company is about to hurry towards their destination. Nynaeve feels she has to warn Teslyn but the more experienced sister dismisses Nynaeve's warning about the storm that is not a storm, the Gholam, the Black Ajah and the Forsaken as fancies of a girl who should not be playing at being Aes Sedai. They are in a hurry so Nynaeve will have to be satisfied with the thought that she has at least tried to warn the woman.
Finally reaching the group of Seafolk Windfinders, what remains of the Knitting circle and a few Aes Sedai jealously guarding the Bowl of Winds who waiting for them in the stableyard, they are ready to leave the city. The women of the Knitting circle are visibly nervous around the Aes Sedai and are very uncomfortable having to guard Ispan. Before they manage to get everybody moving, a shouting match between the Kin and the Seafolk breaks out. Elayne has great difficulty getting them to shut up.
Before the next argument can break out, Aviendha opens the gateway to their destination. It still stings that Elayne can do this with only part of her strength while it takes Aviendha all the effort she can muster. Slowly the group moves through the gateway to the countryside miles north of Ebou Dar.
The group is still moving through the gateway when Aviendha spots a figure high on one of the spires of the palace. Tylin has given orders for everybody to stay out of sight. Still, it could be a nosy servant. Or the Gholam. This idea fills Aviendha with dread. Aviendha sends one of the Seafolk women to Elayne with a warning. She then draws all the power she can muster in a determined effort to keep the gateway open until everybody is through.
