General

Mistress Jharen is the innkeeper of The Light of Truth in Sienda, Amadicia. She is plump with long gray curls, a warm smile and searching dark eyes (TFoH, Ch. 13).

Nynaeve suspects that the woman would be understanding of almost anything short of murder as long as the fares are paid (TFoH, Ch. 16).

Elayne cannot put much sense into Mistress Jharen's reasoning of why the Horn of Valere should never be found. The woman thinks that the Last Battle will break out only if it is found and that if it is not, Tarmon Gai'don will never happen (TFoH, Ch. 13).

Timeline

  • When Elayne and Nynaeve enter her inn disguised as a lady and lady's maid and ask for a room, Mistress Jharen welcomes them and shows them to what they are looking for. She tells them that all of the custom of Sienda's other inn has come over to her and that's why she does not have enough room for "the Lady Morelin's footmen" (Thom and Juilin) except in the hayloft. Elayne wonders whether the woman needs to keep her entertained or thinks she will switch to the other inn, because she talks all the way to their room about customers she has had - like the Children's Lord Captain Commander once, or a Hunter for the Horn the day before. In their room, she plumps the pillows and smoothes the coverlets, and then sends up a maid with refreshments (TFoH, Ch. 13).
  • She offers Elayne a private dining room, but the younger woman wants to eat in the common room. After their meal, Mistress Jharen inquires whether they enjoyed it and Nynaeve settles the bill before hurrying upstairs. When Nynaeve comes down again, she pays the innkeeper for another night's lodging (TFoH, Ch. 16).

Quotes

"Elayne suspected she could spot a worn hem or a flat purse at ten paces. They obviously passed muster, for she made a deep curtsy, spreading her gray skirts wide, and made effusive welcome, inquiring whether the Lady was on her way to or from Amador." (Elayne about Mistress Jharen; The Fires of Heaven, Chapter 13)
