General

Algarin of House Pendaloan is a lesser Lord of the Land in Tear in training at the Black Tower. He is old and has a white pointed beard and a wrinkled face (CoT, Ch. 23). He is far from wealthy, but always pays his debts (CoT, Ch. 23).

Timeline

  • When he was younger, his brother Emarin started channeling (CoT, Ch. 23).
  • He tells Rand he would like go to the Black Tower (CoT, Ch. 23)
  • He leaves his estates for the Black Tower (KoD, Ch. 18).
  • It is later attacked by a large army of Trollocs, because Rand is still there (KoD, Ch. 20). After this attack, Rand considers the estate unsafe (TGS, Ch. 1).
  • He passes the test and starts learning to channel, calling himself Emarin (ToM, Ch. 46).
  • He adapts quickly to the rules of the Black Tower and does not expect to be given preferential treatment because he is a noble (ToM, Ch. 46)
  • He tries to persuade Androl to do something about the rift between Logain's men and Tain's as the men look to Androl (ToM, Ch. 46).
  • He helps Androl map out the area in which Traveling is prevented (ToM, Ch. 56)

Relationships

He was very close to his younger brother Emarin. After Emarin learned to channel, he was captured by Cadsuane and taken to Tar Valon to be gentled. Algarin is grateful for it, as his brother survived another ten years afterwards (CoT, Ch. 23).

His servants are nearly as old as he, but they still keep the place clean and tend the forests well (CoT, Ch. 23; KoD, Ch. 19).

All of his living children are married and Algarin thinks that he might give his estates to one of them when it turns out that he can learn to channel (CoT, Ch. 23).

He was impressed by Rand and is one of the few people left in the Black Tower in Logain's faction (ToM, Ch. 46).

Strengths and Abilities

Despite being a relative newcomer, he is strong enough to Travel (ToM, Ch. 56).

Miscellaneous

  • He is sharp enough to notice when Androl lets slip heknows how to shoot a bow from horseback (ToM, Ch. 46).
  • He owns the skin of a huge snake he claims comes from the Drowned Lands (CoT, Ch. 23).

Quotes

"He impressed me. Young, but with a powerful will. I trust him" (About Rand, Towers of Midnight, Chapter 46).
