General
Arafel is one of the Borderlands, four countries that lie on the border between the Westlands and the Blight.
History
Unless stated otherwise, all information herein is taken from The Wheel of Time Roleplaying Game, Chapter 12.

Like all of the Borderlands, Arafel became a nation near the beginning of the War of the Hundred Years. Concerned about the ongoing war, the governors of the five northern provinces held a meeting; the outcome of this meeting was an agreement to form five independent nations. Because the purpose of these nations was both to work together against the Blight and to protect themselves against the fighting in the southlands, for the most part Arafel did not take part in the war outside of self-defence (TWoTRPG, Ch. 12).
Much of the Last Battle takes place in Arafel, at the Field of Merrilor (AMoL, Ch. 37).
The first Queen of Arafel was Mahira Svetanya.

According to the maps, during the time of the Compact of the Ten Nations, all of the land of Arafel was part of Aramaelle. After the Trolloc Wars, the land was part of the nations of Elsalam and Rhamdashar.

Arafel is one of the Borderland nations that is devoted to protecting the Blightborder. It lies between Kandor to the west, and Shienar to the east, with the Blight to the north. The eastern border between Arafel and Shienar is formed by the Mora River and the southern border by the Erinin.
