Avin is a man from Baerlon who works as a gate guard. He is small, with a wizened face and gaps in his teeth. He does not like or trust Whitecloaks.

When Moiraine, Lan, Thom, and the Two Rivers folk arrive in the town, he tells them that Logain has supposedly won a battle and is moving toward Tear, calling his army “the People of the Dragon”. He lets them through the gate, taking coin to stay quiet, as he did when Moiraine and Lan went through to go to Emond's Field.
