BAYR-lon

General

Located in western Andor, Baerlon is where much of the ore, and especially the iron, from the Mountains of Mists is refined and worked. The Baerlon Ironworks is famous for the quality of its castings. Powerful Dhurran draft horses are often seen on the streets of Baerlon, hauling carts of ore to and from the Ironworks (TWoRJTWoT, Ch. 27).

The gates of the city are only open from sunrise to sundown (TWoRJTWoT, Ch. 27; TEotW, Ch. 13).

Baerlon and the mines are located far from the center of Andoran power and the last several Queens have struggled to maintain their hold over the area. The mines are so vital to Andor’s economic health that other parts of Andor have been ignored in making sure that the mines and Baerlon remain a part of the nation (TWoRJTWoT, Ch. 27).

The Feast of Fools is known as Foolday in Baerlon (TWoRJTWoT, Ch. 27).

City Layout and Buildings

General

Because of its distance from cities of any size, Baerlon is protected by a perimeter wall of logs and watchtowers (TWoRJTWoT, Ch. 27). The wall is twenty feet high (TEotW, Ch. 13). One of the gates is known as the Whitebridge Gate—presumably one facing east, the direction in which Whitebridge lies from Baerlon (TEotW, Ch. 13). There is also a gate known as the Caemlyn Gate (TEotW, Ch. 17). The town had around nine inns (TEotW, Ch. 15).

The buildings are made of stone and wood and roofed with slate and tile (TWoRJTWoT, Ch. 27; TEotW, Ch. 13).

Large farming communities extend to the north of the town and a few farms lie to the south (TWoRJTWoT, Ch. 27; TEotW, Ch. 13).

Broad roads run east and west out of the city (TEotW, Ch. 13). Most of the streets in the city are broad and paved with flagstone (TEotW, Ch. 15).

There are no palaces and only a few houses bigger than the ones in the Two Rivers (TEotW, Ch. 15).

There are shops on every street with awnings overhanging the front of the building, sheltering tables full of wares (TEotW, Ch. 15).
