Avin is a man from Baerlon in Andor who works as a gate guard. He is small, with a wizened face and gaps in his teeth. He does not like or trust Whitecloaks. When they arrive, he tells Moiraine, Lan, Thom and the Two Rivers folk that Logain has supposedly won a battle and is moving towards Tear, calling his army “the People of the Dragon”. He lets them through the gate, taking coin to stay quiet, as he did when Moiraine and Lan went through to go to Emond's Field (TEotW, Ch. 13).
