Barlden is the mayor of Hinderstap, a small town in Murandy. He is a sturdy man with thick arms. When Mat and his companions visit the town, he tells them that they must leave before dark. When Mat stays late, dicing to try and win goods from the men, he tries to encourage them to leave and when that fails, agrees to one final toss. He takes Mat's dice and throws them himself, thinking them to be weighted so that they always come up losing (TGS, Ch. 27).

He and the rest of the town go crazy when the sun goes down. When Mat returns with Thom the next day, Barlden tells them what happens in the village and how they don't remember the details, just occasional images and the feeling that there are missing memories.

He tells them that there is a woman in Trustair with a good likeness of Mat who is asking questions of him.
