Derne is the captain of a ship named the Swift. He has a square face.

He doesn't play dice.

Mat pays Derne two purses of gold, one upon boarding his ship and the other when they reach their destination, for taking him and Thom from Aringill to Tear. Mat complains about how slow the ship is, though Thom remarks that it was a quick passage.
