General

Edeyn's full title is the Lady Edeyn ti Gemallen Arrel. She is a Malkieri noblewoman (NS, Ch. 22).

In 979 NE Edeyn tried to mount an army to reclaim Malkier from the Blight. She rode across the Borderlands to inspire soldiers to rally to the Golden Crane. Lan Mandragoran did not know of this until Edeyn arrived in Chachin, even though she did it in his name. He traveled there to stop her; he knew that what was swallowed by the Blight was lost (NS, Ch. 16). Lan refused to lead an army into the Blight, and Edeyn lost interest in the cause after her daughter's death (NS, Epilogue).

Edeyn has black hair streaked with white that hangs down to her waist. She has dark eyes with fine lines at the corners. She wears the white ki'sain of a widow and is very beautiful. (NS, Ch. 22)

Relationships with Other Characters

Edeyn was Lan's carneira, his first lover. This gave her an advantage over him in private - "a king is not a king, alone with his carneira" - and she used it to direct him. She used her relationship with him to try to force him to reclaim Malkier (NS, Ch. 22).

Edeyn had one child, Iselle. Edeyn spoiled Iselle as a child and loved her dearly. She wanted Lan to marry Iselle despite both of them wishing otherwise (NS, Ch. 22; Ch. 25). She was devastated after Iselle's death and retired from the world (NS, Epilogue).

Edeyn is a widow and never remarried (NS, Ch. 22).

Miscellaneous

  • Edeyn demands every right and requires that all obligations be met (NS, Ch. 16).
  • Edeyn's sigil is a crouching lioness (NS, Ch. 22).
  • Edeyn keeps custom but in her own way (NS, Ch. 22).

Quotes

He was no longer a boy, to think that she loved him just because she had chosen to become his first lover, yet there was an old saying among Malkieri men. Your carneira wears a part of your soul as a ribbon in her hair forever. (Lan about Edeyn; New Spring, Chapter 16)

The letter was very like Edeyn, commanding. Edeyn had been born to be a queen, and she knew it. (Lan about Edeyn; New Spring, Chapter 22)

Whispers said she intended to retire from the world. Moiraine thought she already had. The woman's staring eyes looked haggard and old. In a way, they looked much as her daughter's did, in Moiraine's mind, full of despair and the knowledge of death coming soon. (Moiraine about Edeyn; New Spring, Epilogue)
