Alyria Savoinya

Senior Member Interview, February 5th 2009
Why did you choose Gray?

I felt like I could be "me" with these ladies. If I needed to break down and cry, I knew they would be there. If I was excited over something trivial, I knew they would be excited for me too. I knew if I needed help, they would have my back. Sisters is the only word that fits; they are my sisters.

Are you like the Grays in the Books?

Occasionally. I always see both sides of a situation, which allows me to mediate effectively. However, I try to avoid such situations whenever possible. :p

Do you love politics and do you like to discuss a lot?

I do, and yes I love to discuss politics, but only with those who understand that discuss does not mean "fight," and that it's possible to disagree respectfully.

How was your time as Citizen/Novice/Accepted?

Too short! I never realized the freedom of being a citizen until I was a novice, and then I rushed through novicehood too. I loved being an Accepted, though. It is a wonderful time of self-discovery and I loved the Guesting process.

What things do you do for TV.net?

I am in the process of ending my term as Heart of the Gray, I am part of the new Welcoming Committee, and I am an operator in tv.net's #wheel. All jobs I love, and never want to let go of!

How did you get to read the Series?

My husband forced me into it. I wanted nothing to do with fantasy novels, but to appease him I read the first, and was hooked.

Who is your mentee, if you have one?

I have two lovely mentees, Ilyana and Aduiavas.

Who is your favorite character of the Series? Favorite Nation?

My favorite is Elayne, because I am most like her, minus the spoiled aspect. I like Tear the most, because the Fortress is just too cool.

Have you ever attended any Real Life Functions? Did you like them if you did, and why? (Why do you think people should come to any future functions?)

No official Tower functions, of yet.

What kind of music do you like?

Girly music, like Tori Amos and Ani DiFranco.

What is the craziest/stupidest thing you've ever done?

I left Canada to go to school in the US to be near my now husband! Not a stupid thing, though, he's wonderful. :D

What job do you have?

I work at a Holiday Inn, and am hoping to make a career of it.

Do you have a pet?

I have two kitties, a Lucy and a Mimzy.

What languages do you speak?

Just English. I can read and understand French perfectly, but don't ask me to speak it!

What profession did you want to have when you were a kid?

I wanted to be an interior designer. I had the most awesome bedroom when I was a kid, all of my own design.

Lanfear or Moghedien?

Lanfear, she is way sexier.

Seanchan or Shara?

Shara.

Candles or lamps?

Lamps. How can I see to write otherwise?

Party or lounging at home?

How about a party at my home?

A short bio about yourself.

I am about to graduate with a degree in English Literature, but I will not pursue it as a career. I read constantly, and write poetry on the side. As a hobby my husband and I brew beer. I am relaxed, lazy, and comfortable with myself, and love people. I miss the East Coast of Canada where I am from (where my family is) but I am growing to love the part of the US I am in. I love tv.net. :D

Why did you choose Gray?

There are many reasons I chose Gray. Of all these reasons, knowing I have a home where I am not judged and am accepted for who I am -quirks, history and faults included - is what made the choice so easy for me. What I bring to the Gray Ajah is only as good as the amazing things that they bring out in me. They are my Soul Sisters and I could not ask for a better group of Women (and Men) to be a part of.

Are you like the Grays in the Books?

I have a bit of every 'Ajah' dispersed in my personality. Some good and some bad. I am Blue in my drive for a cause and justice. I am Brown in my OCD for books, order and my general love of the written word. I am Green in my fierce loyalty to my sisters and I will draw swords to protect what needs saving at the cost of my life. I am White in my addiction to philosophy and and the more worldly questions that question the mind and challenge how we live out lives as a whole. I am Yellow in my ability to heal the Soul, support and aid in ways that sometimes defies the laws of medicine or even logic. I am Red in my fight for a stronger world by protecting Humanity with making the decisions that are hard to make. And last but not least I am Gray in my hope for peace, good will and an understanding of others that are far different than myself, even if my views are different and do not agree with theirs.

Do you love politics and do you like to discuss a lot?

I actually abhor politics and avoid it when I can. I grew up with learning a lot of the politics in the church and school systems and found I disliked it immensely. However, I play politics like a Blue. Easily and subtly and generally it goes unnoticed. It's hard for me not to see the threads and manipulate things to the better, or use things to my advantage. It's not a manipulation tactic but more a self preservation.

How was your time as Citizen/Novice/Accepted?

Touch and Go. I can't say that I had a horrible time because it is untrue, however it wasn't the easiest for me either. Something about too many eyes and too many rumors. However I have been steadfast and am now rewarded with a Lovely Gray Shawl and the best Ajah any Aes Sedai could ask for.

How long have you been a member of TV.net?

I joined in August 2007, but I faded away when I realized for one, I wasn't anywhere near done reading the books at the time, and I had responsibilities elsewhere that took priority. However, a year later it took a little nudging by Mother herself to get me back and active. I thank her every day for her nudges.

What things do you do for TV.net?

I have done a lot of varrying projects around the Tower, from siggie making back when I was a Resident Citizen to helping organize threads and even still I keep active in the Tower. *points to her involvement* I don't plan for my activity to change anytime soon.

How did you get to read the Series?

A [ex-]boyfriend actually got me interested in Fantasy. Wheel of Time was just one of many series that wet my tongue in this genre. This was way back in 1999-2000. I joined another WoT site and it pretty much cemented my love for the world. I read up til book 4 when I put it down for many years even though I was still 'very' active in various communities. I did not complete reading it, however, until 2007 and then once again in 2009 when TGS was released. I delightfully await the next edition.

Who is your mentee, if you have one?

I have three Mentees, two are Novices and one Accepted. Kerowyn al'Sindar, who is very busy with her Real Life, Alyssa Letherio, a Yellow demotee who I've found to be far too similar in humour to myself, and my beautifully independent Areandara Zukari'th.

Who is your favorite character of the Series? Favorite Nation?

Typically, Egwene is my favorite just due to the sheer volume of character development of her character. Suian is also a favored character with her pairing with Gareth. My favorite Nation at first was Tear. Then it changed to Cairhien, to Andor and then lastly to the Aiel. However I love each fairly equally and spend more interest in the Cairhien Academy than any individual Nation.

Have you ever attended any Real Life Functions? Did you like them if you did, and why? (Why do you think people should come to any future functions?)

I was invited into the TV.net party rooms at the D*Con 2008, where I was delightfully molested by Mother, bitten without flinching by Red & Esteban. This is also where I met my Significant Other, James Davion. I was raised to Accepted at the 2009 Anni Party in Seattle (area).

Since being raised to Aes Sedai I have attended two D*Cons in 2010 and 2011.

I highly recommend attending RL functions. Not only do you learn more about the Tower on a personal scale, but the Tower learns that little bit more about you. These are fantastic people and why would you not want to get to know them. Just be prepared to know when to be 'mum' and to always have a bottle of rum handy for the wayward Browns.

What kind of music do you like?

World, Poetically Dark, Ambient, Goth, Opera, Lyrical If you want a Playlist, you won't have enough room here.

What job do you have?

Currently I have no job, although I do have a diploma in Web and Graphic Design, and will not be able to work until I am able to apply for a GreenCard, which will not likely happen for a while yet.

I aspire to be a Novelist.

Do you have a pet?

I have a Husband.

What languages do you speak?

English and 'some' Japanese. However I'm very rusty with the Japanese.

What profession did you want to have when you were a kid?

Equestrian Veterinarian, or a Teacher.

Lanfear or Moghedien?

Neither, I'm a Graendal Fan.

Seanchan or Shara?

Shara. Women are in charge and I can Channel without wearing a collar.

Candles or lamps?

Definitely Candles!

Party or lounging at home?

Lounging, unless the party is intimate with great friends.

A short bio about yourself.

Web Designer, Artist and Writer; I dabble in various things that also include music, crafting and the occasional moments of satirical humor. I'm an avid RPer and reader and hope to one day be published with a series of my own. Other projects include; WoT Tarot Deck, Ajah Beaded Bookmarks & Knitting.

Why did you choose Gray?

Gray is my home... Oh, you want a less cheesy but completely honest answer. Ok, Here goes. When I read the books I assumed I was a blue... all the cool cats are blues, they go out and make change in the world, and that was where I was headed. I was going to take the world my storm (by the way, I have taken the world by storm, I have made change in the world, and I will continue to do so, but as a gray, not a blue as my story will show). When I got into the tower, I posted in all the ajahs rooms (this was before guesting) and felt most comfortable in the Gray. I still posted in Blue, because no way was I some scheming conniving Gray... I was a Blue, I knew I was blue. But there was a disconnect when i was there. The lovely ladies of the blue were silly and around (aka, active) and fun, but I felt more at home with the Grays. I finally figured it out. Gray feels like home because it is my home.

Are you like the Grays in the Books?

My definition of the Grays, ya, I am TOTALLY like that. I love to educate, as in teach people things they did not know, or show them a new perspective, usually my perspective. I went to College in an area with politics that differed WILDLY from my own. My best friends out there were on the complete opposite side of the fence. Grays (and I) have the ability to be flexible, to change from within, and to look past differences to achieve goals. This is what I mean when I say I have still changed the world. The world needs the unyielding blues to go out and fight for their beliefs, but the world then needs the grays to come in and deal with the fallout caused by such abrasive tactics...

(am I making ANY sense?? I hope so, because this is starting to feel like my manifesto or something)

Do you love politics and do you like to discuss a lot?

Yes, and yes. So much. I love to know what other people think, and why and try to get them on my side, though i have no problem agreeing to disagree and going out Swing Dancing instead of debating.

How was your time as Citizen/Novice/Accepted?

How was my time? It was great. I remember as a citizen, a bunch of us made the GC club, Garbage Can Club... the GCs were awesome, we had these pimped out Garbage Cans we lived in and had a generally awesome time. I remember that I raced through Novice and became accepted the second I could, but for some reason, I delayed taking the final step to become Aes Sedai. I don't have a clue as to why. But Gray was my home, and there was more to the site, so, I bit the bullet and became a full blown Gray, and have been ever since.

How long have you been a member of TV.net?

Uh, I think I joined in '05, my Junior Year of High School. My best friend and I saw each other once a week for a while, and I would read a book and she would lend me the next book, and I would read it in the week. This went on for 5 weeks, and then a little more than a week was needed per book... She wanted me to sign up for the Site right away, before I'd read the books, but I negotiated down to I'd read one of the books, and then join. And the rest is history.

How did you get to read the Series?

See above... seriously, things got a little hairy there for a minute. I was not doing any homework (though I never really did do my homework) or sleeping or watching TV, I was reading these books, so that no time would go by that I didn't know what was happening next. Now, I wish I had spaced it out so that these LONG PERIODS OF WAIT would not be so painful... (the end is SO CLOSE, I can TASTE it)

Who is your favorite character of the Series? Favorite Nation?

Faile is awesome! I know I am not like her, but I think I would like to be. As to nation, well, again, I think I will be boring here and say Andor, I love the people that come out of there, and I could see myself quite happy in Andor.

Have you ever attended any Real Life Functions? Did you like them if you did, and why? (Why do you think people should come to any future functions?)

I have never been to one of the Huge official ones, but I have loved the small informal gathering game that has been going on since my first get together with the Grays of Massachusetts (when there were more of us)

What kind of music do you like?

Songs you can sing along with. Folk Music. Klezmer and Yiddish Music. Simon and Garfunkel, the Beatles, the list goes on.

What job do you have?

I will soon be teaching English in the Republic of Georgia. I think teacher is what I want to do in the future as well.

Do you have a pet?

NO, not a fan of animals as a general rule.

What languages do you speak?

English and Yiddish well, Spanish not so well, and Russian and Georgian barely, though that will change soon.

What profession did you want to have when you were a kid?

First I was going to be a Ballerina, because you can't be President until you are 35, so what else would I do until then. So, Ballerina until I am 35, then President for 8 years, but what next. Well I still wanted to make change in the world, so I would THEN become a princess. I was going to redistrubute the wealth by having everyone in the world give their money to the fire fighters (I felt firefighters were most trusted) and then the whole world would line up around the world (I think I was influenced by that picture of all the people holding hands around the world) and the Fire Fighters would go around and give everyone one dollar until everyone had one, and then they would go around and give one more dollar, and this would go on until we ran out.

Yes, I was (am) a weird kid....)

Lanfear or Moghedien?

Moghedien, I like the spider in the shadows over the brazen here I am Lanfear.

Seanchan or Shara?

Shara, we know WAY less about them, and I want to know more!

Candles or lamps?

Lamps, the flickering of candles gives me a headache

Party or lounging at home?

Lounging at home with my friends. We have our own kind of party, it is called playing board games and singing all night.

A short bio about yourself.

More? What else is there to say? I am a spatially efficient (other people say short) happy person who needs a couple friends, a good book, and the a world to explore to be happy, which I generally am. I can't really think of anything else to say...

Why did you choose Gray?

I felt really comfortable being in this Ajah. It fits well with my personality and It feels like home

Are you like the Grays in the Books?
