General

Lian of the Nine Valleys sept of the Taardad Aiel is the roofmistress of Cold Rocks Hold, Rhuarc's wife, and thus sister-wife to Amys. She is also Aviendha's sister-mother (i.e. aunt). She is slender, more than handsome with yellow hair streaked with white at the temples and gray eyes.

She gives Heirn, Rand and Rhuarc permission to enter her hold. Couladin receives it, too, in a very insulting way which makes him leave again, offended.

She enjoys Rand's and Mat's guest gifts, but will not take one from Moiraine, an Aes Sedai.

She likes Tairen silverwork, but has always wanted something from Andor.

She tells Rhuarc that some of the clan chiefs have already reached Alcair Dal.

Quotes

"Such modesty," Lian said slowly, "is becoming in a man. Men seldom know where to find it." Spreading her dark skirts, she curtsied, awkwardly -- it was not a thing Aiel women did -- but still a curtsy, in return of his bow. "The Car'a'carn has leave to enter my hold. For the chief of chiefs, there is ever water and shade at Cold Rocks." (Lian to Rand when he asks permission to step beneath her roof, as if he were not the chief of chiefs; The Shadow Rising, Chapter 49)
