A Sudden Chill

Author: Atarah al'Norahn

Characters: Mat, Aviendha, Chel Vanin, Nynaeve, Egwene, Elayne, Tabitha

Setting: Salidar

Point of view: Mat

Mat is riding through the Altaran countryside with Aviendha, Olver and the Band of the Red Hand. Vanin shows up and tells Mat that he has found Salidar, and that there are hundreds of Aes Sedai and Warders, as well as a very large army. Mat takes Vanin, Aviendha and two men and rides into Salidar. When they reach their destination, an Aes Sedai leads them to the Little Tower to speak with their Amyrlin. Aviendha is swamped by a bunch of Aes Sedai who want to make her a novice, and Mat goes inside with Nynaeve to speak to the Amyrlin.

When he enters the Amyrlin's office with Nynaeve, it is to find Egwene and Elayne, the former with a seven-striped stole upon her shoulders. Mat immediately assumes that they are playing a joke and pulls the stole from Egwene's shoulders. He announces that he will be taking Elayne back to Caemlyn. He also tells them not to say a word and he will rescue them again, saving them from the wrath of the Aes Sedai when they find out that Egwene was playing at Amyrlin.

A novice named Tabitha enters the room and asks Egwene if she would like any wine for the General. Egwene replies no, and asks for Tabitha to tell Sheriam that Egwene will be sending for her shortly. Mat realizes that he has made a mistake and that Egwene really is the Amyrlin Seat for the Rebel Aes Sedai.
