Point of View: Egwene

Setting: Salidar

Characters: Egwene, Mat, Elayne, Nynaeve, Sheriam

Outline

Egwene, Nynaeve and Elayne talk with Mat. When he leaves they decide it would be better if he and the Band accompany Nynaeve and Elayne to Ebou Dar.

Summary

Now that Mat knows that Egwene really is the Rebel Amyrlin, Egwene reclaims her stole and calmly adjusts it. Mat tells them that this is madness, and that they will end up with their heads cut off. Nynaeve kicks Mat on the bottom, causing Egwene and Elayne to have to hide their laughter. Mat, now limping, is very angry.

Egwene tells Mat that he is in quite a predicament, but that she should be able to get him out. Mat is confused, and responds that it is Egwene, Elayne and Nynaeve who are in a predicament. Egwene replies that many people in Salidar do not take well to Dragonsworn. When Mat protests that he is not Dragonsworn, Egwene reminds him that he goes where Rand sends him.

Mat tells Egwene that if they do things his way, if the Rebel Aes Sedai go to Rand, they will be able to reclaim the White Tower without any bloodshed. Egwene declines, saying that Elaida is her concern.

Mat finally gets fed up and leaves, telling Elayne that he still intends to take her back to Caemlyn. Once he is gone, the three girls begin to formulate a plan that deals with Mat, the Band of the Red Hand, and Gareth Bryne's army. Once this is done, Elayne suggests that they take Mat to Ebou Dar with them. They speak about this at length before agreeing.

Sheriam appears, and Elayne and Nynaeve leave. Sheriam wants to know what Mat had to say, and Egwene mentions that Rand wishes all the Rebel Aes Sedai to join him, and to swear fealty to him. Sheriam is horrified, but Egwene eventually assures her that she told Mat "no". They decide that Mat will have to move his army, because Gareth Bryne's army will not put up with Dragonsworn.

By manipulating Sheriam, Egwene manages to get her to suggest exactly what Egwene wants to do: move north towards Tar Valon.
