What Philanthropy activities are present at Official Events?

At every official event, we encourage members to participate in some sort of philanthropic activity that will benefit the local community where the event is being hosted. This often takes the form of drives, where members bring items to donate to a local charity. At our Anniversary events, when we prepare our own food as part of the event, all excess food is donated to a local shelter, kitchen, or other organization. Members may also engage in service activities at events, volunteering time or creating items that will be donated.

How can I contribute?

Any member attending an official event is encouraged to participate in these philanthropic activities. Information on how to participate is posted in the appropriate event planning forum before the event.

Members who are not attending the event could participate in event drives by passing on items to a friend attending to donate. Members not attending an event who wish to contribute in other ways should contact the Director of Community Outreach.

How are charities chosen?

Charities for our philanthropic activities at events are chosen by the Director of Community Outreach, Director of Events & Conferences, the relevant Mistress/Master of Revels, and the event local liaison. There are a number of qualities we look for in charities to be recipients of our drives, including:

  • local presence in the community where the event is being hosted
  • support of causes important to our members
  • a high percentage of donations going towards program services

I know of a great charity for us to support! How can I suggest this?

Recommendations for charities can be sent to the Director of Community Outreach. They will be evaluated by the Director of Community Outreach, Director of Events & Conferences, the relevant Mistress/Master of Revels, and the event local liaison when it is time to choose a charity for the event. Please note that only charities local to the event location will be considered.

What are some examples of Philanthropy activities at Official Events?

At our 2010 Anniversary Events, members participated in a book drive to benefit Easter Seals (Wisconsin, USA) and Severn Hospice (Telford, UK). At our 2011 North American Anniversary, we held fundraisers for both Crisis Ministries and Trident Literary Association.

Questions on Philanthropy at Official Events and our other Philanthropy activities can be sent to our Director of Community Outreach.
