Mera is an older Aiel woman. She has a husband, three daughters and two sons. One of her daughters is training as an apprentice Wise One.

On a day when the apprentice Wise Ones have been given a day off, the apprentices, along with a couple of mothers and some first-sisters, are gathered in a tent to chat. Egwene is invited to join them. The conversation eventually turns to ways in which men can be handled. Mera tells Surandha and Estair that the only way to handle any chief, whether he be a hold chief, sept chief, clan chief or the Car'a'carn himself, is the same way to handle a husband. She later tells Estair that she might be a Wise One eventually, but Estair should listen to a woman who has managed a husband and raised five children without a sister-wife to help.
