REHN-drah

General

Rendra is a Taraboner and the innkeeper of The Three Plum Court in Tanchico. She is pretty and in her late twenties. She looks almost like Liandrin with her big brown eyes, a "plump rosebud of a mouth" and her pale honey-colored hair in a multitude of little braids (TSR, Ch. 39). She has an older sister (TSR, Ch. 46).

She spends her time chattering about various things from appearances and clothing to soaps and seamstresses, anything to do with fashion. Still, she is concerned about her patrons, whether it is providing bodyguards because the streets of Tanchico are dangerous, keeping trouble as far away from her inn as possible or making sure that her inn is safe and that no one needs to be guarded inside of it (TSR, Ch. 46; Ch. 52).

Timeline

  • She accommodates Elayne, Nynaeve, Juilin and Thom in her last two available rooms. The next morning she brings them breakfast and says that it will be no problem styling the two women in the Tanchican fashion (TSR, Ch. 39).
  • Juilin tells Rendra that Elayne, Nynaeve and Egeanin will take tea in the Chamber of Falling Blossoms. When the innkeeper serves them, she chatters freely about various topics. After Egeanin is gone, Rendra comes in again to announce that someone (who turns out to be Moghedien) is in the hallway and has asked after Elayne and Nynaeve. They tell her to bring the woman in (TSR, Ch. 46).
  • She serves Elayne, Nynaeve and Egeanin Domani food, because it is "the fashion" even though Tarabon and Arad Doman are at war with one another (TSR, Ch. 51).
  • Nynaeve sends Thom to find Rendra and have her bring some tea (TSR, Ch. 52).
  • After rescuing the Panarch Amathera from the Black Ajah, Elayne and Nynaeve take her to the Three Plum Court, where she is introduced as the poor refugee Thera. Rendra lets her stay and work for her meals (TSR, Ch. 55).

Relationships

She knows Bayle Domon well and thinks that he is charitable and kind with his soup kitchens for the poor. He also talks her into giving to the poor (TSR, Ch. 39).

Elayne likes Rendra, although she wonders how the innkeeper is able to be so successful while seeming to be concerned only for fashion and her looks (TSR, Ch. 46; Ch. 51).

Juilin flirts with her, which she enjoys (TSR, Ch. 46).

When Moghedien first sees Rendra, she mistakes her for Liandrin (TSR, Ch. 46).

Miscellaneous

  • Despite the current situation in Tarabon, she is able to pay her taxes and give to the poor (TSR, Ch. 39).
  • She remembers times when there was order in Tanchico and hopes they will come again (TSR, Ch. 51).
  • Although Nynaeve would not admit it, Rendra is able to talk her into the most fashionably tight bodices (TSR, Ch. 52).
  • Elayne is glad that Rendra buys what food she needs when she can and is not wasteful with it like the nobility is even though the city is full of starving people (TSR, Ch. 54).
  • Elayne fears that someone among the inn's patrons might recognize Thera when Rendra has her serving in the common room (TSR, Ch. 55).

Quotes

"When first she saw me, she looked at me as my older sister did when we were children and she was thinking of tying my braids to the bush." (Rendra on the visitor, aka. Moghedien; The Shadow Rising, Chapter 46)

"When they reached the Three Plum Court, it was scarcely less surprising to hear Elayne introduce the Panarch to Rendra as Thera, a refugee with no money who needed a pallet, and maybe some work to earn her meals. The innkeeper shrugged resignedly, but as she led “Thera” away to the kitchens she was already telling the woman what lovely hair she had and how pretty she would look in the right dress." (Nynaeve on Elayne, Amathera and Rendra; The Shadow Rising, Chapter 55)
