Geography

Shandalle was one of the nations of the Free Era. It was located in the central part of the Westlands. To the north was Tar Valon, with Tova to the east separated by the Alguenya, Khodomar to the southeast, Esandara to the southwest, and Caembarin to the west separated by the Erinin. Eventually, this area of land became what is now western Cairhien.

History

The banner of Shandalle consisted of three golden hawks in flight.

Shandalle was relatively small, and was not included among the "powerful" nations of the Free Era. However, it was the homeland of Artur Hawkwing, which gives it a rather prominent place in history and us a fair amount of information on it.

In FY 912, Artur Paendrag Tanreall was born to King Myrdin Paendrag Maregore and Queen Mailinde Paendrag Lyndhal. In FY 939, an epidemic of the Black Fever swept through Shandalle (and possibly other nations), killing approximately one tenth of the population, including Myrdin and Mailinde. Artur, along with his first wife, Amaline Tagora, became the King and Queen of Shandalle.

In the spring of FY 940, Shandalle sent an army to battle against Guaire Amalasan. Although, as mentioned before, Shandalle wasn't an incredibly powerful nation, it had, up to this point, managed to stay independent and fend off all invasions by its neighbors in previous years. Other nations soon learned that Artur Paendrag Tanreall and the nation of Shandalle were able to consistently match Amalasan's forces.

In the summer of FY 943, after Guaire Amalasan's capture, forces were sent to Shandalle by Queen Nesaline of Caembarin, King Tefan of Khodomar, and First Counselor Almindhra of Tova. Their intent was to conquer Shandalle. Artur Hawkwing fought back, and by late FY 943, he held parts of all three nations. When, in FY 944, Aldeshar, Ileande, and Talmour sent aid to Caembarin, Khodomar, and Tova, Artur Hawkwing proceeded to conquer the Westlands.
