The Nature of Pain
Point of View: Egwene
Characters: Egwene, Katerine, Barasine, Elaida, Silviana, Meidani
Setting: The White Tower
Silviana beats Egwene in the morning. In the evening, she goes to serve Elaida and finds Meidani there. Elaida annoys Egwene by taunting Meidani, and suggesting that Aes Sedai should swear a fourth oath, one of obedience. When she gets the chance, she tells Meidani to send for her, reminding her that she is her Amyrlin and that her work is appreciated. Eventually, Egwene gets so angry she drops the soup she is serving, causing Elaida to send her to Silviana for a further beating. During this beating, Egwene realises that the physical pain is small compared to the pain of seeing what Elaida has done to the Tower and she starts to laugh.
