General

Alsalam Saeed Almadar, Lord of Almadar, High Seat of House Almadar is the King of Arad Doman (Glossary). He is not pretty enough to be one of Graendal's pets (LoC, Ch. 6). He has been a good ruler for over twenty years (CoT, Prologue).

After civil wars start in Arad Doman and Tarabon, he and several of his family members disappeared (TWoRJTWoT). His current whereabouts are unknown (Glossary), though rumor says he is dead (CoT, Ch. 18). According to Rodel Ituralde's information, the King was smuggled out of Bandar Eban and hidden away by the Council of Merchants (CoT, Prologue). When Rand was in Bandar Eban, no one had reliably seen Alsalam in half a year and he was assumed dead (TGS, Ch. 10; Ch. 31). The council did not replaced him as they were trying to keep power for themselves. Rand locates him somewhere on the Caralain Grass (ToM, Ch. 32), presumably acting on information Verin gave him (ToM, Ch. 3). He is killed during the Last Battle (AMoL, Epilogue).

Miscellaneous

  • Graendal keeps Alsalam's brother Ramsid, his youngest sister, his daughter and his sister-in-law as acrobats (LoC, Ch. 6).
  • Graendal sends a forged letter in Alsalam's name to Rodel Ituralde to sow more chaos (TPoD, Ch. 12). This document orders him to gather as many men as possible to strike against the Seanchan (CoT, Prologue).

Quotes

"Every woman on the Council that he confronted went flat-eyed and evasive at any mention of the King. He could almost believe they did not know where Alsalam was. A ridiculous thought, of course. The Council kept an unblinking eye on the King." (Ituralde; Crossroads of Twilight, Prologue)

“The King had a soothing voice. He’d always been able to calm others. Ituralde was certain the merchants of Arad Doman had chosen him for that reason. Tensions could run high when trade and war were concerned - the Domani looked at the two as much the same beast. But Alsalam…he could calm a frantic merchant who had just lost her entire fleet at sea.” (AMoL, Ch. 24).
